I knew the Rafale could land on American CATOBAR designs but only now realized that the opposite took place as well, as U.S. airplanes actually landed on the CDG deck.
Apparently, not only are the measures and interfaces of the arrestor hook/arresting cable and nose gear/catapult car combinations identical between the French and American CATOBAR decks, but also the F/A-18 (presumably with lower max weight) is capable of landing on the considerably shorter landing zone of the CDG.
The F-18 Hornet is a 30+ year old design. Even the "super" Hornet is just a slightly larger version with greater range. If this were not so, then why is the US developing the F-35 as a replacement for the F-18?
Brazil should purchase the Rafale. Because the Hornet is obsolete and it comes with too many political strings.
@The6000Sabre I dunno... Right now the superbug has AESA radar and it can carry a theoretical maximum of 14 AAMs and AMRAAM has longer range than MICA. The Super Hornet also can carry a wider range of air-to-ground weapons and is cheaper. The Rafale on the other hand has a longer combat radius, smaller RCS, greater maneuverability and supercruise capability. When it gets the AESA radar and Meteor it will surpass the Super Hornet in the air-to-air role.
Except that the RBE2-AA is markedly inferior to the APG-79 in the Super Hornet which hit IOC over 4 years ago. By the time the RBE2-AA hits IOC the second gen GaN T/R modules will have doubled the APG-79's
range.
The Rafale has a larger RCS than the Blk II Super Hornet according to just about everyone. The Rafale has never demonstrated supercruise in any competition. Radius and maneuverability are debatable points. Meteor doesn't offer much over the AIM-120D already at IOC.
For what? The specs for the RBE2-AA are well known and its manufacturer Thales concedes that they are in third place in AESA development behind Raytheon and Northrop-Grumman.
Raytheon has announced that their GaN modules are ready for operational use and the range advantages of GaN-based T/R modules are well known.
Eurofighter GmbH did an RCS analysis of 4th gen fighters and rated the SH Blk II the best. Even a casual inspection will reveal plenty of RCS reducing features.
The problem with pitting the Rafale or the Typhoon against a F15C+ or the upgraded F14'E' which would be serving right now had the Super Hornet not been chosen instead is that engagements usually begin BVR. Yes, both European fighters are more maneuverable close in, but that is frankly their only advantage. Elsewhere they come up short, and would begin the majority of engagements at a disadvantage.
The Super Hornet? Well, as a air superiority fighter, it is a turd. More F4 Phantom than F14
Sorry to say that but you're completely wrong. the Eurofighter and the Rafale are far superior to the F-14 , F-15, and F-18 in close combat AND in BVR thanks to their AESA radars and their radar jamming systems.
Actually he is right new F-15's and F-18's would have the advantage in BVR. The Rafale use's outdated Thales RBE2 PESA radar. The new F-15's and F-18's use AN/APG-79 AESA radar which is literally 10x better or so.
im afraid my friend that the current french rafale and eurofighter have up to date radars. and that the newer f-15's or etc still wont match the bvr engagement of the rafale or the eurofighter.
Eurofighter yes the Rafale no. Like I said just look up the RBE2. It is pathetically weak. I know their is more factor's to BVR engagement then just Radar. But the Radar is the basis of a BVR engagement. If your enemy has a radar that can track you up to 10x farther away then you can track him. Then that is a problem.
im not sure how the f-15 can have better radar abilties then the rafale. i searched up both already and found similarities. plus the french use different types of radar technology. if you go on french military websites you would see how the french are always upgrading their rafale radar.BUT you must know french. vous parle le francais tres tres bon garcon?estquetu est fatiguey?
Just type in RBE2 versus any other modern radar. It is pretty common knowledge it is a horrible radar. Even wikipedia state's that it sucks in comparison to the new AN/APG-63 or AN/APG-79
one can argue...really. the french rafale supposedly was to have the greatest radar on earth on the western hemisphere....but maybe they over exaggerated their abilities.. nonetheless. its funny how 7+ for rafale and 11 plus for f-15 are so close to each other in 0.0001 lol. i garauntee you find a french military forum or site they will give you more precise evidence.
I cant read french so that's useless lol. I also only use wiki mostly for background info date's, model types, location etc. If you can find me some good info to say otherwise then that would definitely be welcome. But like I said it's fairly well known the RBE2 PESA radar is crap.
problem is i dont keep track of the websites i find..sometimes it takes more then 30 minutes for me to find foreign military sites...its like searching a library filled with 5 billion or more sources lol. im afraid its up to you to find it..cause i have to go eat now.
It's not a horrible radar, it's one of the most sophisticated radar in the world, and one of the most resistant to jamming.
It's true its range is bad in comparision with other radar but it doesn't matter because the Rafale will have a new radar (RBE2-AA), with AESA and +50% range.
Anyway the Rafale has a much lower RCS than all the F-teens.
The new radar won't be coming out for a while though which is the bad part. "Anyway the Rafale has a much lower RCS than all the F-teens." That may and may not be true. The newer F-18 Super Hornet is said to have an RCS of .1-.05m^2. If I am not mistaken this is around the same as both Rafale.
"The RBE2-AA will be operational in 2012" Still a little ways away but at least it will be an upgrade. The new AESA version should make it more difficult to jam. The exact value of Spectra for stealth is still up for argument though.
Oh and those figure's come from. f-16 . net/f-16_forum_viewtopic-t-6262 . html
Can't say it's super reliable but considering it is fairly common knowledge that the RBE2 is crappier then all newer radar's it doesn't strike me as unbelievable.
well now that youve read assumptions from an american military site..now find a french military forum and compare the case...thats what i do concerning chinese technology lol...luckily chinese sites have translations for english lmao!!
Maybe but the Rafale got a lower RCS than the F-18, and with the mica IR/em and OSF the rafale can fire missile within switch his radar That give it a real advantage in BVR
The RBE2 AESA is still a ways away. I am talking currently. Also the Rafale has a lower RCS but the like I said the AESA is much more powerful then the RBE2. Meaning the F-18 can detect the Rafale before it detects him and the AIM-120D which is set to be operational this year is better then the MICA. The capabilities of the Rafale in BVR are only as capable as it's Radar. Which is not very much.
