Thank you, I have been looking for this piece preformed for nearly five years. I played it in High school as 1st Chair Tuba. Nobody believed me when I spoke of the Tuba Piccolo duet that is Act 4. Four years of lugging around a marching Tuba(bugle style) paid off when I was able to share that duet with my (then) girlfriend as the final song played in my musical career.
Though I'm assuming my band director rearranged it a bit since it's not quite what I remember.
This song is murder on the baritone...especially for the lips. Playing this as an euphonium player for the first concert back from summer break is NOT a good idea. >.> My stamina can't keep up yet.
@plut0smus1c Me too! I was so excited that I could hit the high G consistently after lots of practice. then I broke my arm and I can't reach the valves in my cast. FML
i feel bad for the second clarinet during the second movement! i'm second at my highschool, and i don't know if i just sit there, or look off of third's music!
okay people. i am in band right now. playing the Euphonium/baritone (whatever you prefer to call it. i have 6, yes i counted, 6 solos in it. it is NOT an easy song. its pretty hard, but its gotten easier after A LOT of practice. but yeah, dont bash what you dont know people.
@shako9876 Yeah, I feel bad for any tuba player who has to play the melody alone at this speed. We're doing it in band and it's pretty insane for her.
Im looking at the oboe music right now, that solo in the 2nd movement is supposed to be an oboe solo and probably says clarinet solo on the clarinet part incase there are no oboes.
That is soo supposed 2 b a clarinet solo..I played it myself last month at the top of the page it says clarinet solo one player only...one for solo clarinet and one clarinet each from 1st and 2nd if the conductor chooses that..then at the end it's the clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, and then trombone or tuba solo followed by solo bass clarinet...
It's not even truly supposed to be a clarinet solo it's supposed to be an oboe solo. And honestly this piece is not that difficult. I learned a lot playing this piece and it is alot of fun. Especially song of the blacksmith. but once you understand it.... it flows like the wind!
This was pretty good. But honestly they shouldnt have added the piccolo in the second movement because it sounded really out of tune, its not the players fault thats just the way a picc is. And they skipped like a whole little section in the last movement. but still it was ok
ugh.. i always seem to have problems making the first set of 16th notes at the begining light and connected on tuba..... thats the one thing that i always seem to have problems with...
I actually believe that it is the piccolo that is out of tune and may not be entirely the flutes' fault in the second movement because they seem okay later in the movement, that and the oboe is out of tune it seems. Both are understandable because they are both instruments that are hard to tune well. Couple bad entrances and the conductor's coducting style kind of bugs me, its like he has T-Rex arms and he could be a little more expressive... but besides that, a nice preformance overall.
not for me, i play a Bb Euph, maybe you play something diff... I also played all the movements, and the first ant the fourth movements both have high G's, which are the highest in the entire song. (i'm talking about the G above the scale, not the one in the top space of the scale)
My band is playing this song this year and im only in 7th grade. My school was the
2nd best band in texas last year. We are shooting for first this year. we are also playing Pablo! by Richard Meyer- its a cool song...you should hear it
Previously I played the trumpet. In 'Song of the Blacksmith', I had the solo for my band. Holst generously gives that solo to 2nd part trumpet rather than 1st. Very neat.

looks really claustraphobic, but a good performance, very strong brass

I didnt hear much of a dynamic range. That could have made this performance way better. it was good though

Sounded good. Basses need to give a bit more gusto at the beginning. The hardest of the set is song of the blacksmith for timing.

I adore this song! I am currently playing it on piccolo, it is a relatively easy song to play considering it is mostly repetition.

The technicality might be easy, but the style is hard to play.
Even so, I really like this song :]

it seems that the conductor is slow. or the band is fast...thats the way it looks from this video. i could be wrong. its just my POV

It might be the time that the sound takes to get the recording device. That will happen if you are sitting far enough away
