Here that guitarists, actually practice with a metronome or a drum loop as boring as it sounds it will pay off. I know because it has worked for me. Now get off youtube and practice!
The only time Paul Gilbert would recommend to start a new string on a downstroke would be if he finished the previous string on an upstroke!
MAB is talking about the 3-NPS situation where you start-out playing: DOWN - UP - DOWN on your starting-string, then UP - DOWN - UP on the next-string, etc!
When playing linear-scales (like MAB in this video!) Paul Gilbert is a strict alternate-picker, so PG would've given the EXACT SAME ADVIDE as MAB in this video!
My comment was directed at instrumentalist28 (NOT MAB!) Whose comment you CANNOT read, cuz he has removed it! It said: "How come Paul Gilbert says to ALWAYS start a new string on a downstroke?!?"
Paul Gilbert (strict alternate-picker) would NEVER suggest ALWAYS starting on a down-stroke!
Now go read xboxdragondude's comment (he agreed with me!)
So I ain't talking shit, BUT I CANNOT (and WILL NOT ever) play better than MAB - LOL!
@billmeedog I've seen Gilbert's videos also and he definitely did NOT say to always start on a downstroke on a new string. spectrox is a baddie, noob :D
So what I was trying to explain to the guy who removed his comment (instrumentalist28) was that Paul Gilbert AND Michael Angelo Batio BOTH approach most of their picking-strategies (alternate-picking) the same way. Furthermore, they are BOTH AWESOME players and teachers, and as such, they would both give similar advice when it comes to 3-note-per-string picking-patterns...I guess I don't see how that makes me a "shit-talker?" I sure NEVER said I could play better?!? WTF?
hes not wearing pants, kick ass 3:03

His advice is right on the spot. When I practice some riffs, I compose my own background music with an tried-n-true workhorse.. Fruity Loops.

Anyone who's interested in copying what batio practiced when he was earlier but is new and can't figure it out, the notes are:
F - Gb - Ab - Bb - B(Cb)- Db - Eb - F - Gb - Ab - Bb - Cb - Db.
MAB is tuned down a semitone, so he starts on 4th fret of D, but if you are in E standard start at 3rd fret.
It is just Gb major/Eb minor starting on an F(3rd fret of D).
