@littleyellowkite Christ, do I ever remember that! There is no more good sit-coms (at least none that compare to this era). I'll always remember Herb dressed up like a giant carp trying to sneak into the men's room stall.
This is what I wrote when I was 17 watching the show.
Went to the Bartender ... "Whatcha got in here?"
Said, "Due to the modern day, I'm a pack up, 'n' all the beer! Ah ha."
I said "Good Bartender, I'll have a beer an' head out."
I said, "Good, Good", an' he poured a lot of beer ... ah ha
Based on the economy being so bad in the late seventys ... bar business was up, smoking was up. At 18, I had no luck finding a job, stopped at a bar on my way home and had a beer or two. A cheap high.
According to the DVD commentary, there are no real lyrics to this song, it was a demo recorded on the fly in a CBS studio by Jim Ellis who recorded other background tracks for the show. But at the time he didn't have lyrics written for the song so he's basically just mouthing gibberish into the microphone in the rhythym that he wanted the song to eventually be in. Harris the creator of the show used the song anyway because in the original CBS airings there was always an announcer dubbed over.
I always liked that song, but it is about rock and roll, and a patron relating to or about a bartender. I forget the guy's name, should be in the credits?
Rumor has it that Jamie Lyons (RIP) of Music Explosion & Capital City Rockets fame teamed up w/Rick Derringer & created this cool ditty that should've been released as a single and could've been a Top 40 hit. Both musicians are from Ohio the Buckeye state (my home state.)
Even in junction with the Wiki info, these words sound about 90% dead on ........only questionable is the 2nd verse about the box outta her hair.......but everything else sounds almost exact.
Mad tooth bartender. Bounce the night away. Still gotta run with rock and roll in our hearts. Say. Good Bartender. Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah. I said I wouldn't do it. And poodle lovin in our hearts.
((continued from below)) On the spot words?? No. Studio time isn't cheap. Musicians can't afford risking cost and time overruns because they were not prepared, and preparations include BOTH music and words. But hey, that's my opinion, and "wikipedia" is the current "god" of all knowledge. What do I know?? It's still a fun song, and a fantastic TV show!!!
As a musician myself, it is EXTREMELY difficult to create words "on-the-spot" to a song like WKRP's. With all due respect to "wikipedia" (some of us are decades older than "wikipedia"), think of this: Jim and the other session musicians did not simply go into the studio and fire up that song, first take. It was thought out. Jim probably had words PREPARED IN HIS MIND that matched the song characteristics. ((continued))
this was a thought /obsession as a child. I used to watch the show, want the voiceover to go away, and hear the song...yes I allways wondered about the words...but then the documentaries came on such as Entertainment Tonight, and WIkipedia. SOmetimes in Syndication, there would be no voiceover. Now they have it on DVD and an explanation on WIkipedia, also check out the 1978 film "FM"!!!
From Wikipedia: The closing theme, "WKRP In Cincinnati End Credits", was a rock number composed and performed by Jim Ellis, an Atlanta musician. According to people who attended the recording sessions, Ellis didn't have lyrics for the closing theme, so he sang nonsense words to give an idea of how it would sound. Wilson decided to use the words anyway, since he felt that it would be funny to use lyrics that were deliberately gibberish, as a satire on the incomprehensibility of many rock songs
Moose...if only I drank!! As I said, just my opinion. Yes, a couple of words need tweaked. But for over 30 years I've been deciphering sounds, information, and other "interesting stuff" from worldwide radio transmissions...."spooky, eh??"!! Anyhow, how 'bout YOU and all the 'KRP fans here having a Shot 'o Bourbon, I'll raise a glass of Cranberry, and we'll toast WKRP!
Sounds like your interpretation of the lyrics makes more sense to me than I've ever heard or even guessed. If you come up with any new ones, let me know. All the best to you :)
Yes, the cat was Mary Tyler Moore's "trademark" for all of her shows in the 70's and 80's. The old "Bob Newhart Show" (Larry, Darryl and Darryl) finished with the cat's voice being Bob Newhart meowing. BTW: The words I scribbled last night ARE MY OPINION only!!! But after sitting and listening to it MANY, MANY times in a row, that's what I heard, but I may not be stickin' to it!!
Always wondered what the words were to that song since the show was prime time tv. Now I know and another nagging life mystery is solved. lol That cat at the end they used to change for different shows. Hill Street Blues it wore a police cap; The White Shadow it bounced a basketball. I think for Newhart it had a meow from Bob Newhart. WKRP was hilarious; too bad it didnt last longer. WKRP followed by MASH on Monday nights. Classic comedy line-up circa 1979. Where'd the time go?
Yep. That orange kitten on the MTM logo was Mary Tyler Moore's cat. I remember on The New WKRP ending credits, instead of hearing the cat meow, the cat said "WOOOOO!!!!" I'm sure I'm not making that up since I use to have an episode of The New WKRP taped off television years ago.
Just to let you guys know, there actually aren't any lyrics to that song. It was said in an interview with the creators. He's actually talking jibberish.
The vocal was basically a "scratch" track, i.e., a vocal track recorded solely to help the musicians and the show's producers get a feel for the song and the lyric melody. But the producers liked it as is, and it was never changed, so there aren't any words, just meaningless gibberish!
Supposedly there are no lyrics. It's known as a "scratch track" for tv ads/features to be played over on CBS. But, everyone out there can here Bartender several times in the song. Coolest 30 second rock song ever!
Every time I set foot on Cincinnati's riverfront...I think of this song, simply because of the shot of Riverfront Stadium while this was playing on the show.
I had to watch that three times in a row. Still laughing. Especially the whack a mole bit. Okay, and the poodle with a lid on. Wait - watching for fourth time now...
Yeah check out my version. I always heard something different. However I must admit the Mad Tooth may have done that bar chin up. It seemed like a strong tooth. Check out my version. Not as well done as this guy's though. I love this video.

Wilson decided it would be funny to use lyrics that were deliberately gibberish, as a satire on the incomprehensibility of many rock songs.[14] Also, since CBS always had an announcer talking over the closing credits, Wilson knew that no one would actually hear the closing theme lyrics anyway.
"Said to the bartender, best night I ever had. Singin' to the bar, put a microphone to her heart...I said, good bye madam, I had a bird in hand. I said I'm doin' good, and I'm putting love in her heart"
If you made this video, you...are pure comedic genius refined! Laughed like a loon and promptly sent a link to all the fools in my address book. 5 STARS!
well...I was born in 1976. I didn't grow up watching the show, but I watched and loved every one in syndication. The show was awesome but I gotta say that the highlight for me was the closing song...a song I wish to this day was full length with a band attached! THanks for the post!
This is great!!!! One of the funniest videos I've seen on youtube in a while (guess I gotta get out more!). Well done. I had a mediocre day - thanks for making me laugh!!
Not a coincidence. Everything about WKRP was full of Atlanta radio injokes. WKRP was based on and created by a former WQXI DJ. WQXI was a famous Atlanta FM station. The turkey drop actually happened; a WQXI DJ was up in a copter and did the deed; it later became the stuff of legend on WKRP. I used to live in Atlanta and listen to "Quixsie". All WQXI fans know WKRP was based on that legendary Atlanta FM station! Check Wiki!
This not the original ending. "My woman from Tokyo" was the original ending but like all the reruns of the show they couldn't use the music because of legal issues.
No this was the original ending. The songs played during the show had to be relaced with generic songs but this was definitely the original end theme used during the first run of the series.
This used to drive me crazy when I was a kid (from Cincinnati) cause I thought it was a real rock song and couldn't figure out the words. Just recently found out it was written specifically for the show with intentionally indecipherable lyrics!
Wow there are some smart people out there on YouTube and you're one of them. You saved me allot of headache. Back when I was in a garage band I kinda' made my own lyrics to this song having not heard it in years. Something like: "One two spot in a parking lot I said hey! Yeah the cute little girls' put the rock and roll in our hearts." You may laugh!
Great song, even if the lyrics don't work perfectly. I'm probabbly adding this to my mix tape after work! Sorry, since after 2004 Rock will always lose out Vs. to Disco for me.
Anyone know where I can get this as a ringtone?

Sittin at the bar
with a microphone at her heart,
I said, "Good Bartender"
I said "I've had it with her!
I've gotta do it to it,
And pull my life from her heart..."
Sounds like the song's character was singing about a former lover, who also sang at the same bar. And that he was tired of her, and wanted to move on.
Note to future musicians: if you ever plan on recording something that may be used for TV, please write the words down!!!

Does anyone have a full version of that song? It rocked!

Well...
That makes about as much sense as any other interpretation I've heard...

effing hilarious.

This is hillarious. I later found out that the song didn't have actual lyrics, just gibberish. For years I thought they were saying:
"A bucktooth bartender, he's got psorias in hair yeah, Met her in a bar full of rock'n'roll dinner".
I ate too many paint chips, I suppose.

Said to bartender, "Box of night in hair."
"Still to do a model daily, rock n' roll, yeah, uh huh."
I said, "you're a bartender, and like to bat a head, huh?"
He said " A rootie tootie, and a cola and a minnow"

Ric Peterson on CJAD in Montreal said it perfectly: "You thought WKRP was a sticom...you're wrong, my friend...it was a documentary!" heh heh

"Said to the bartender, best night I ever had. Singin' to the bar, put a microphone to her heart...I said, good bye madam, I had a bird in hand. I said I'm doin' good, and I'm putting love in her heart"

Well done and funny as hell. The more I watch it the more I laugh. I wouldn't do it if a poodle had a lid on either.
Mike2747 3 years ago
well...I was born in 1976. I didn't grow up watching the show, but I watched and loved every one in syndication. The show was awesome but I gotta say that the highlight for me was the closing song...a song I wish to this day was full length with a band attached! THanks for the post!

As someone born in 1968 who watched this show, I always thought the lyrics were...
"I said to the bartender
(Nonsense lyrics)
(Nonsense lyrics) microphone (nonsense lyrics)
(Nonsense lyrics) bartender (nonsense lyrics)
I said I wouldn't do it
(Nonsense close)"

Not a coincidence. Everything about WKRP was full of Atlanta radio injokes. WKRP was based on and created by a former WQXI DJ. WQXI was a famous Atlanta FM station. The turkey drop actually happened; a WQXI DJ was up in a copter and did the deed; it later became the stuff of legend on WKRP. I used to live in Atlanta and listen to "Quixsie". All WQXI fans know WKRP was based on that legendary Atlanta FM station! Check Wiki!

I love this song.

This not the original ending. "My woman from Tokyo" was the original ending but like all the reruns of the show they couldn't use the music because of legal issues.
Pbody66 3 years ago
No this was the original ending. The songs played during the show had to be relaced with generic songs but this was definitely the original end theme used during the first run of the series.
johnnygriffd 3 years ago 2
This used to drive me crazy when I was a kid (from Cincinnati) cause I thought it was a real rock song and couldn't figure out the words. Just recently found out it was written specifically for the show with intentionally indecipherable lyrics!
johnnygriffd 3 years ago
Wow there are some smart people out there on YouTube and you're one of them. You saved me allot of headache. Back when I was in a garage band I kinda' made my own lyrics to this song having not heard it in years. Something like: "One two spot in a parking lot I said hey! Yeah the cute little girls' put the rock and roll in our hearts." You may laugh!

I might say to people "I won't do it if a poodle had a lid on it!" Rare rock songs are just NOT played on the retarded radio now...

This is like the Anime version of the show. lol.

Great song, even if the lyrics don't work perfectly. I'm probabbly adding this to my mix tape after work! Sorry, since after 2004 Rock will always lose out Vs. to Disco for me.

"If a poodle had a lid on" - LOL! Nice interpretation. Also, was thas Rush Limbaugh in the whack-a-mole game?
