I have read that children fare better with popular names of the time. I d always like unusual but not whacky names prior to that. My name is very short "Kim" I do have a middle name. I always wished I had a longer name to work with for nickname options. My husband too being name first just Lew. When filling in forms course we give them first middle last but our first they always say oh "just" Kim "just" Lew. So I prefer longer names that give the child and everyone options to work with.
