This is the Astroworld I loved! The Astrowheel, the Alpine Sleighs, The Toboggan, The Model T cars and of course the astroneedle. While I embraced the roller coasters as I got older, the fond memories of the old rides remain. RIP Astroworld, We were blessed to know you.
i was there at this time.... as a kid first couple of times i had adults with me ...then my parents kinda knew how much i loved it there so they would just take me there and drop me off ...sometimes with my friends ...mostly alone ...you never felt alone at astroworld as a kid anyway...it was my second home in the 70s ...was the name of the ferris wheel the Skywheel?
brother and me went with father first year it was open from dallas ,he only could remember the cold air of the alpine sliegh ride!me i just remember going!!!!!!!!
This brings back all of the very fond memories for me of two great family vacations to the park, in 1968 and 1973. I would give anything to go back to those years, and these rides. Thanks so much for sharing this video.
I blame the school districs for astroworld closing. Before the new law was passed last year, they had cut the summer vacation down to 2 months causing places like astroworld to loose money in the month of ausgust.
@billybassman21 I was more the fault of the Rodeo show that took place next door. That's where the parking disputes came from and nowadays, Astroworld's site is the parking lot for the rodeo show. There were numerous problems that contributed to Astroworld's closing- caused both by Six flags and the city of huston
mostly I miss the Alpine Sleigh Ride. As a kid it reminded me of the kind of rides at Disney land. Although when they changed it into Batman The Escape... I quite liked that one too. The walk through the Batcave was wonderful.
I've been to this park several times growing up. The last time was in 1996 before I began college at LSU. I cannot believe this amusement park is gone. This brings back a lot of memories.
Excellent video. Makes me wanna go back in time to the days when Astroworld was still great. The demise of the park had nothing whatsoever to do with city management, KLOL or anything else. the problem was that in the past 10 years or so before it closed, Six Flags continued to charge more and more to get in and just completely failed to maintain the park or the rides and it became totally overrun with thugs.
Love it... Lived in Houston my whole 39 years.. I remember Rub, a Dub, DUb, also Barrel of Fun... Wacky Shack.. I never did ride Black Dragon, too scared of it... I remember being scared of the Alpine Sleigh Ride. Great video, and thanks.
Wow, what great memories this brings back! Too bad they didn't get the Black Dragon! I always wanted to ride it, but was always too little, then they took it out and put something else in. =/
I grew up in houston, think about city management in houston for a minute the 4th largest city in america cannot keep an amusement park open..piss poor city management, dont even get me started on 101KLOL..DONT GO THERE~!!!
Memory lane, except never that far back. I never saw that big mountian, or that twisty-coiliy thing when I went there in the 90's. Did anyone notice that cool office that was surrounded by water? The one that had a triangular roof, I always wondered about that building the most because people were not allowed in there. Anyways, cool vid.
OMG, the Astrowheel, Swamp Buggy, River of No Return, Le Taxi, Alpine Sleighs, Astroneedle, even think I saw Rub-a-dub from one of the cable car shots... and the complete LACK of anything else around it except for the dome and the Astroworld Hotel. Way cool.
@coasterguy You are so right, this is way cool. This video makes me remember my childhood like it was yesterday. Rub a Dub, the toboggan ride, the Black Dragon. They bring back so many memories.. I remember being chosen to steer the boat on River of no Return and freaking out when the guide told me to steer to the right and the boat went to the left. This video almost makes me want to cry.

Thanks for sharing this. I remember hearing about the film on the message boards. This is the era I really missed, by only a couple years though!

That has nothing to do with city management. Thats corporate bs that has no regard for anything but the mighty dollar
djrage70 4 years ago
Uh Yeah... That is why we have corporations. The dollar drives everything. Including the start of Astroworld.
