On this date in 1964 {Mar. 7th} "Dead Man's Curve" entered Billboard's Top 100 chart; eventually it would peaked at #8 and spent 14 weeks in the Top 100...
Ranked 28th on Billboard's Year-End Hot 100 Singles of 1964 chart...
Inspired by the actual dead man's curve on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, CA
The B-side of this record also charted; "The New Girl In School", peaked at #37...
Used as the title of the 1978 made for TV movie about Jan & Dean...
@britinabq Well, it's Hollywood! But Jan & Dean did lip sync at this event as a joke. Jan wasn't ready to sing yet. The crowd did not appreciate it. A couple of years later, Jan really sang and got a standing ovation. So it holds a lot of truth if you combine 2 events.
@MR94RB1 AND MR94RB1, on the place you cited where Jan is...as the camera continues to pan, his parents are shown right behind him then as well...except his mother is a bit hidden...but his father is fully visible, mother to his right. They really start about 6:17 or 6:18 Your welcome! : )
now i realize this was a movie but im wondering if Bruce Johnston and Mike Love played themselves in it? because if they didnt the similarities are uncanny.
This is the part I cried like a baby. I would have been grateful just to see Jan ALIVE. Both actors did a first rate job. Rock on Dean. RIP Jan, you are missed.
use to work with these guys when I dated "Mark" from the original lineup of Papa Doo Run Run...such california history...shame things ended but the music lives on forever!!!!!
use to work with these guys when I dated "Mark" from the original lineup of Papa Doo Run Run...such california history...shame things ended but the music lives on forever!!!!!
I saw this decades ago as a kid and just realized that Richard Hatch starred in this! Thought I would have realized this being a fan of the original BSG. Jan & Dean were more my parents generation of music but I had 2 of their albums in my room growing up (a greatest hits and drag city) and listened to them constantly. Great music! Amazing harmonies.
*one very interesting thing: this movie was developed (with the help of Dean Torrence and author Paul Morantz) from a 1974 Rollingstone Mag article. The author (Paul) saw this YouTube....and has put it on his website....he has posted a wonderful section on his site all about Jan & Dean...with a new article he wrote regarding them (PLUS a whole lot of other interesting articles he's written!!) to see: paul morantz . com / jan-dean / (leave out spaces)
The movie was a little more into showing how egotistical Jan was at the height of Jan and Dean's career - it was unfortunate how much he had to go through to become a normal person (and not a rock God.) I say this with love, as my brother used to surf with Dennis Wilson and Dean (when he was available and not doing graphic art work.)
This clip is so special...i agree.....but the fact that this was a point that brought about Jan and Dean's Phase II of their career....it's amazing and glorious. I wish that the tv interview Jan and Dean gave on the Mike Douglas show some months after they actually started touring again ....October of 1978...would be posted on here. It's sooo moving and wonderful. Jan talks about his experience....and there aren't any words to describe the admiration it evokes for him....and Dean.
When you put your mouse on the thing that lets you move the place in the video, at :02....you see the real Jan...and his parents are right behind him....and then at 6:17, you see his real mom and dad better.
Thanks for posting. This was such a good movie. Richard Hatch was terrific. Do you know if the movie is available anywhere here? Did it make it to DVD?
I remember this movie while I was growing up. It was about Jan and Deans life, and Jan had a Very Bad Car accident and couldn't speak very well. This tribute to the both of them in this movie is a classic but was never put out on video.
@tedm1975 No, Brian wasn't in the movie. He and Jan co-wrote Surf City together, but the movie didn't get into much detail on that stuff. It's ashame. I wish it would've showed Jan producing and arranging the songs. It also would've been great if it showed Brian and Jan writing songs together.
@pjsman5252 it was more on the auto accident then the music but that was the irony of the situation he couldnt do music in a coma then he made a partial recovery and comeback
I remember this movie too and hope it come out on DVD. I also saw Jan & Dean in concert after Jan car accident and they were great concerning what had happen to him.
The Hollywood Palladium held a “Surfers’ Stomp Reunion” concert in the summer of 1973. The crowd, made up mainly of barefoot blond teenagers from Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach, was really into the bands–the Surfaris, the Marketts, the Challengers, Dick Dale and the Del-Tones–but a segment turned hostile and booed when the featured guests, Jan and Dean, made their first live appearance together in seven years.
@gates69 Didnt they read the newspappers back then. The car accident was front page news PLUS it was several years before they tour again, after the accident..was that NOT a clue. I would have been trilled just to see Jan alive, silly me for valueing life over singing no matter how great.
I have a cd of alot of early 60's TV shows with Jan and Dean singing, Most of them were lip-syncing. Most singing acts back then did. Big Deal.........

This is the greatest tv movie ever made. The very first bio made about rock stars. i saw this at 14 years old in 1978 and still watch it all the time. God bless Jan & Dean !!!

Why oh why isn't there an official DVD release of this movie??? The original script ran over 3 hours and there are outakes...where are they??? Come on CBS...this a # 1 rated TV movie in 1978 and 1979!!!!!!
I was 6 years old when this movie came out, but I remember it so vividly. I did have the pleasure of seeing Jan & Dean live about ten years ago. What a great comeback story! RIP Jan, you are missed.
I remember hearing in an interview with Dean, that it didn't happen exactly the same way in real life. In reality, they purposely made the tape sound like a record skipping, just as a joke to add a little humor into their show. However, the movie producers felt it was too complicated to explain what really happened so they altered the story slightly. The overall point was still made though. Jan & Dean did lipsynch, the crowd did realize it was lipsynched, and they did boo Jan & Dean. Good scene!
This concert was at the Hollywood Palladium in 1973, and J&D were the headliner act of several other surf groups, with the last performer being the great Dick Dale. I recall the tape appearing to "fluctuate" and the crowd did boo, that is true. Jim Rush, the bass player of Papa Doo Run Run, which provided the music for this film, confirmed that the use of the tape was just a gimmick to try and fool the crowd, and to show, in the end, that the boys were back!
In a prior scene a man says to jan I can make you bigger than the everly brothers and jan says whos the everly brothers [ that actor pops up in old tv shows like the big valley and the fbi usualy getting killed after one scene ] .

Jan & Dean belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
They had many hits, fans and helped to create sounds that were legendary.
J&D and the Beach Boys created the California surf sound that helped to define the 1960's.
I shake my head at some of the acts already in the Hall.
Many did not do half of what Jan & Dean did.

This concert was at the Hollywood Palladium in 1973, and J&D were the headliner act of several other surf groups, with the last performer being the great Dick Dale. I recall the tape appearing to "fluctuate" and the crowd did boo, that is true.
