Time doesn't matter. I always find it a bit humorous to brag about your time in an event that doesn't allow you to run from station to station... I find the whole CPAT test to be a bit stupid to begin with but you gotta pass to get the job.
Damn , I took the test today and got an 8:30. I dragged the dummy walking backwards. I think that slowed me wayy down. I wasn't sure how fast I could walk either. Plus I was already tired after the stairmaster haha
there is truth to be said about doing the test at sea level, inside, with heat, and humidity... that could very easily slow you down.... but also take into consideration we tested at over 6,000 ft and in cold Colorado winter air- that can freeze your lungs just as much as heat and humidity can clog them... just a note of differences
@aescalante24 no they don't look at technique just that you follow the rules. I'm doing my CPAT today. First time. Kinda nervous but I'm sure i'll do fine.
@sukh44 i'm actually training myself physically tight now to take the CPAT, but what school is best to take the fire science courses? is there one in orange county?
@aescalante24 I live in Vancouver BC Canada so I'm not sure what is out your way. trainingdivision . com this site lets you do it online and then you go to Texas for 2 weeks of training.
PS I rocked my CPAT. Wasn't even that out of breath by the end.
@humpboomr19 "IF" you listen to the instructors GIVING the test... @ 45 sec (of the the videos time, NOT the test time) HE states "the test will begin in 3, 2, 1..." AND THEN at the end of the test, the female instructor (that has been testing him the whole time, watching for a pass or fail) @ 7:16 sec; SHE states "6:27" .... and SHE is the one giving the test... and she is watching the stopwatch in her hand that she is testing him with... SO PLEASE stop and count... OR JUST LISTEN.
@humpboomr19 There is a 20 second warm-up on the stepper. If the candidate falls off, this time is restarted. When the candidate can adequately maintain his balance for 20 seconds, the official time starts and the speed increases.
Great job man! I did my cpat 2 weekends ago and was flying and ended up with a 7:21. I watched this video a couple times before I took the test and afterward I was like "There is no way Big Bill beat me by almost 1 minute"!! They started the time as soon as the stair stepper begins where I took it. I watched this video again and timed it. I came up with around 7:05. Just wondering if anyone knows where the 6:27 came from? Was I timing it correctly?
@mdotcata if you listen really careful you will hear the tester state - "step all the way to the top, ok 30 sec warm up" then the test begins in 3 2 1 and so on... hope that helps
@mdotcata6:27 seems hard for me to believe, nothing against the guy. Just looking at the video without counting it took atleast 7 minutes. I did it in 7:31 and i'm not in shape.
@XWHITEoKNIGHTX19 No not normally. They have a timed session you can attend which I think is a practice, don't know for sure (mine is coming up in a month). If you would like to practice the skills ask your local department or a volunteer department nearby and ask if they will help you with each skill.
I took my pat test just this saturday.....My time was even faster than his. I almost fainted when i was done though because i was so exhausted from moving so fast; and i accidentally did an extra rep on the ceiling breach.
Bill dragged randy like it was a paper weight. Talking from experience, you have to think like that, and after every station, just keep thinking that "closer to the end, closer to passing". I did a similar test 5 months ago, passed with a great time but didn't have enough EMS experience. I have another chance to take it again in exactly a week, and am praying that I have enough experience now. I have been working out almost every day since the first. God WILL give me strength :)
hey everyone, quick question. does a faster cpat time help you get hired in the hiring process? do they look at it and stuff or is it just a pass or fail type deal? tahnk you!

@ifarmangus there are a few walls here and there, and it gets shorter ceiling and tighter walls towards the end of the tunnel.... so you basically can army crawl out
yeah "Big Bill" looks like he was taking his test outdoors in February. He should have tried it a damn tobacco warehouse in the middle of July when the heat index is around 100 degrees. I guarantee he wouldn't have been moving as fast.
I have to take the Pat test in 3 weeks to be a volunteer firefighter will I have to do something like this?any tips i should know?doing 500 sit ups every other day/300 weight lifts in different directions ofc and use a speed rope for about 45min.what else should i do to prepare?
@legend1617 ... i am not sure... different departments have different requirements... so I would check with your volunteer supervisor and ask them. as for training its 90% about stamina!!! try doing all of your hardest work outs back to back to back and make it last longer than 10 mins. best advise- spend a lot of time on the stair master
@kingjeremiah I took my test yesterday lol I came so close but failed.Everyone had to wear a jacket, helmet, gloves and a tank in like 97 degree weather...It was my first time and made mistakes though and didn't use the techniques.I couldn't keep control of the 3inch hose on my shoulder going up 5 stories. After i finished pulling another 3inch hose up by a rope I had to go back down with the 3 inch.all I had left was like 2 stories and the 185 pound dummy pull and I would have passed but didn't :/
@kingjeremiah The chief and other firefighters said I did really good for someone who has only been working out for two months.I also have scoliosis but it didn't effect me at all lol I think if I had the techniques down I could do it but I am going to wait a while to lose weight and get into shape then try to train at station 17.I quit because I felt extremely lightheaded then vision went black when I was 2 stories down.So damn close but I am only 18 so I got time.
I timed this MANY MANY times, and everyone who says his time is wrong, HAS NOT even passed grade 10 math. I have got 6:27 all times, very impressive Big Bill!!! And like kingjeremiah said, its not size or strength that gets the best time, its determination and stamina. Fore everyone who is thinking of taking the CPAT, train hard for it because it is very demanding and GOOD LUCK!
actually who ever say that 6:27 is the wrong time you are wrong. the actual test started at :50. the video has been extended to extra 50 seconds. 6:27 is the correct time.
wow, I'm impressed.... My time was 9.09:00. My weak spot was the stair stepper though, my legs were wobbly when I went into the hose drag, couldn't run, but after that my legs started coming back
What would u say is the most important thing to have going into the cpat.......like upper body strength, cardio, etc. Any advice would be helpful. I'm a 5'9 170 pound girl and wanna know so I can start working on it.
Thanks! I'm just an explorer now so I still got a few years before I actually have to do it but my post is doing it for "fun" soon and I wanna be ready
My mom's 52 and she did it back in April! Took her several tries through last Sept/Oct.Nov and March/April, but she finally got it on her last chance (our town hired her before she did the test because they were trying to fill the spot and they gave her 6 mo. to pass)
Bloody hell Bill, thats impressive! Im 17, and im looking to pursue the career of a firefighter. The CPAT made me the most nervous. Lol but still bloody well done!
Just wanted to post another thank you to Big Bill. Had my CPAT today for a NY position. Knocked it out with 1:25 to spare. 85F and 90% humidity didn't exactly help I'm thinking. Thanks again Bill.
hey...this video was very inspirational...i am a very small woman and i thought it would be impossible to pass the test...but i passed two weeks ago on my third try and i did it in 8:51..which isn't great but i got the job done...Thanks to Big Bill I studied this video every night until I got it right....
the test doesn't start on the video until about 49 seconds and he finishes at 7:15 aka he definitely got the time posted. Well done BIll dominated the test great time and few people will come reach that mark yourdepotlogohere definitely still can't do math they even show you on the video when the test starts pull out the calculator and do the math and you'll see he got the time
Great time. I just tested and got a 7:49; I shouldn't have taken as much time that I had taken. I really thought it was going to be a lot more difficult. I'll retest when it comes around again. Thanks for the video, though. Definitely used it for my benefit!
well, to whom ever this is i dont think you passed math very well, because if you take off the 48 seconds of video in the beginning that is worm up (which you can clearly hear on the video) and even then if you went by what "you" say he finishes by the clock on the video its 7:15, NOT 7:27. SO I'm not sure the point of trying to rip down his accomplishment but it failed horribly and you just made yourself look stupid.
THIS, is a video of the fire dept. giving Bill his test, and I'm quite sure that if this ladies full job for the day was to test people for their CPAT then she runs around the course with a stop watch in her.... SHE is the official time keeper of this event, NOT the youtube clock!!! Get your facts straight before you try to insult someone, otherwise you just make yourself look REALLY DUMB!!!!
Actually the warm up is 20 seconds, and I may have been wrong about the time, but his total time is not 6:27, not taking anything away from him, just pointing out the time for those of us who look to achieve what Bill has(killer time).
if you look at what I said with a chip on your shoulder then you can come to the conclusion you did, or look at it from the recruit's side and see that I wanted to make a point that you don't have to be as big or strong to do well in it.
I feel so sorry for you that you think that your still right against a live video.... even other people on here have done the math and found it right! So I have no clue how your still getting it wrong but the video, the trainer, the trainie, and the lady administering the test... oh and the 10 or so other firemen that watched all know that it was right!!! So is there a chip on my shoulder- no, can i count-yes, do i insult others videos-no, do you w/ your lack of math skills & bad comments-YES.
jeremiah - You are a meat head and a jackass. I hate working with firefighters like you. There's no need to be so antagonistic. You should learn better English too. Maybe there is no chip on your shoulder and you're just an asshole.
yourdeptlogohere - Your math is wrong buddy. The time stated with the video is correct.
Well vslsubspam, I'm sorry you feel that way, but nothing is going to change by you trying to state that i'm an asshole, maybe i come across like that to you, but i'm not going to take crap from someone with a stupid comment when they cant count and the basis of the their whole argument is on their wrong math. So if standing up for yourself comes across as being an ass, then I'll be an ass all day.
It didn't look like he was trying to be insulting. It wasn't necessary to unload on him. There was never any need to even stand up for yourself or defend yourself. You totally blew it all out of proportion, and reacted as such.
While size isn't everything. Size and strength do count for A LOT. CPATs a physical event. So is basketball, MMA, and football... I'm sure there are females that could hold there own in a male league, but on the whole I wouldn't be drafting a whole team of women.
i never once said anything about having to be big and strong, infact the person who held the record before Bill in his training class was a little 5'6" spunky women! It has nothing to do with size and how strong you are.
im guessing this one was a practice test cause i see snow lol i took mine today... did it in 8min 58sec but they couldnt count any of my group because it wasnt 45 degrees outside... it sucked but at least i know i can do it even though im the youngest one in the group lol
BILL AND JEREMIAH! Thank you SO MUCH for making this video. When I left the house & went to take my CPAT today, since I had showed everyone curious about the test this video, they said to me GET IT BILL! :)
Anybody who takes the time to TRAIN and take advantage of the practice sessions can do great on the CPAT. Even little girls like me!
hey, thank you guys for posting this. I wanted to see what all the CPAT was, I saw all the segments separated, but it really helps to see everything put together and how they walk you through it (as someone who forgets everything, it really helps).
the hardest thing will be the dummy drag just because of the added friction due to your height. that being said, i'm 5'5" and the cpat is pretty easy. most importantly, make sure you know all the rules; because little things will dq you. for example: in our test, when bill raised the ladder against the wall, he may have been dq'd due to the ladder bouncing off the wall. and finally, TIME DOESN'T MATTER... just pass. good luck. fire fighting is the best job in the world.
yeah this is parker FD, its where we did our 2nd cpat test. no job opennings yet for Bill, but his is still looking and testing... as for me (Jeremiah) i only took it to prove to everyone on youtube that you can do it cold turkey as long as your in any kind of good shape. thanks and God bless.
Hi to all, I am a 27 year career firefighter paramedic, keep training, never give up! This is the best career in the world, I have never regretted a day at the station. Have faith, pray and take every test available.
Big Bill and Jeremiah hope you both got positions in the Fire Service! Question is this Parker Fire District in Colorado?
SOON TO COME !!!!!!!!!! We will be posting videos of how and what we did for training of the cpat. We will also be taking questions anyone has on how to improve on an obstical and posting a video reply, SO if you have any questions post it here on the comments and we will start replying as soon as we get them. Thanks to all who watch, good luck and God bless.
hell of a job. i passed mine yesterday after watching yours...i didnt go to any practice sessions although i should i would of problably had a better time.but hey i got my certificate
Very inspiring, Bill... I passed it twice, in April and June, but they won't tell us our time in British Columbia. But, um, yeah, not nearly as fast as yours! Still proud as a 5'4" 130lb female though!
congrats on passing Bill. I failed twice recently I failed at dummy first time then on my second set of pike pole push and pulls. I ran out of time both times.
for those preparing: it's hard to not get caught up in the finish time, but remember it's a pass/fail test. the finish time only matters to yourself.
take a good look at this brother's technique. *Walk briskly from station to station. You just may need the seconds you save here. *Wall breach: take big swings w/ the sledge. *Ceiling breach & pull: use your WHOLE body to drive & pull the pike. Your arms are dead at this point. *Most of all: TRAIN FOR THE STAIRS.
Dude you frieken nailed it. I havent taken the cpat nor the biddle, but man you made it look easy thats forsure. Way to go man. Im conditioning to take it, I just dont know when is all!!
That is the best i've ever seen. That put my 7:58 to shame. He killed that dummy drag. I pull it up high, but the way he just draged it with one arm is the way to goo. Good job.
wow this guy makes it so easy
i'm 15 and want to become a firefighter / paramedic, so i definitely have my work cut out for me when it comes to getting in shape

Physical fitness as a firefighter and a cop are a must, but yet the vast majority of Dept's never test again... that is union power for you! (And why so many FF's and Cops are in poor condition) Cops and fire should be mandatory service for the young (like the military once was) it would save taxpayers huge dollars and would ensure that the young and strong would constantly be refreshed every few years. 6:47.. they didn't start the time until 40 seconds into it.. 20 seconds after the warm up.. just sayin.. still a very good time.

What would u say is the most important thing to have going into the cpat.......like upper body strength, cardio, etc. Any advice would be helpful. I'm a 5'9 170 pound girl and wanna know so I can start working on it.
randomconversations9 2 years ago
endurance mainly, also cardio vascular and leg strength. jog like 2-3 miles a day. the big thing is endurance
funnystuff1284 2 years ago
Thanks! I'm just an explorer now so I still got a few years before I actually have to do it but my post is doing it for "fun" soon and I wanna be ready

DANG ol boy made that look EASY!
Ive got 2 months left to train for mine. Went through orientation, and it most certainly is not easy.
threadsofwisdom 2 years ago
i just passed today with 1:00 minute left...i say the hardest part is the dummy drag cause by then you are way too tired.

My mom's 52 and she did it back in April! Took her several tries through last Sept/Oct.Nov and March/April, but she finally got it on her last chance (our town hired her before she did the test because they were trying to fill the spot and they gave her 6 mo. to pass)

bigstu08 2 years ago
Just wanted to post another thank you to Big Bill. Had my CPAT today for a NY position. Knocked it out with 1:25 to spare. 85F and 90% humidity didn't exactly help I'm thinking. Thanks again Bill.
saintdude1 2 years ago
hey...this video was very inspirational...i am a very small woman and i thought it would be impossible to pass the test...but i passed two weeks ago on my third try and i did it in 8:51..which isn't great but i got the job done...Thanks to Big Bill I studied this video every night until I got it right....

Good work- I will take my test on August 9th. in CT. I hope I do good in my practice then I would not have to show up in August.
sonoenergy 2 years ago
the test doesn't start on the video until about 49 seconds and he finishes at 7:15 aka he definitely got the time posted. Well done BIll dominated the test great time and few people will come reach that mark yourdepotlogohere definitely still can't do math they even show you on the video when the test starts pull out the calculator and do the math and you'll see he got the time
ghostbusterusa 2 years ago
Great time. I just tested and got a 7:49; I shouldn't have taken as much time that I had taken. I really thought it was going to be a lot more difficult. I'll retest when it comes around again. Thanks for the video, though. Definitely used it for my benefit!
Spiclette31 2 years ago
Bill's test is actually 7:27, not 6:27. Look at the clock that accompanies the video.
For all those that are worried, Im 5'8", 155lbs. Fit but not big and I posted a 7:35 today.
yourdeptlogohere 2 years ago
well, to whom ever this is i dont think you passed math very well, because if you take off the 48 seconds of video in the beginning that is worm up (which you can clearly hear on the video) and even then if you went by what "you" say he finishes by the clock on the video its 7:15, NOT 7:27. SO I'm not sure the point of trying to rip down his accomplishment but it failed horribly and you just made yourself look stupid.
kingjeremiah 2 years ago
THIS, is a video of the fire dept. giving Bill his test, and I'm quite sure that if this ladies full job for the day was to test people for their CPAT then she runs around the course with a stop watch in her.... SHE is the official time keeper of this event, NOT the youtube clock!!! Get your facts straight before you try to insult someone, otherwise you just make yourself look REALLY DUMB!!!!
kingjeremiah 2 years ago
Actually the warm up is 20 seconds, and I may have been wrong about the time, but his total time is not 6:27, not taking anything away from him, just pointing out the time for those of us who look to achieve what Bill has(killer time).
if you look at what I said with a chip on your shoulder then you can come to the conclusion you did, or look at it from the recruit's side and see that I wanted to make a point that you don't have to be as big or strong to do well in it.
yourdeptlogohere 2 years ago
I feel so sorry for you that you think that your still right against a live video.... even other people on here have done the math and found it right! So I have no clue how your still getting it wrong but the video, the trainer, the trainie, and the lady administering the test... oh and the 10 or so other firemen that watched all know that it was right!!! So is there a chip on my shoulder- no, can i count-yes, do i insult others videos-no, do you w/ your lack of math skills & bad comments-YES.
kingjeremiah 2 years ago
jeremiah - You are a meat head and a jackass. I hate working with firefighters like you. There's no need to be so antagonistic. You should learn better English too. Maybe there is no chip on your shoulder and you're just an asshole.
yourdeptlogohere - Your math is wrong buddy. The time stated with the video is correct.
vslsubspam 2 years ago
Well vslsubspam, I'm sorry you feel that way, but nothing is going to change by you trying to state that i'm an asshole, maybe i come across like that to you, but i'm not going to take crap from someone with a stupid comment when they cant count and the basis of the their whole argument is on their wrong math. So if standing up for yourself comes across as being an ass, then I'll be an ass all day.
kingjeremiah 2 years ago 2
It didn't look like he was trying to be insulting. It wasn't necessary to unload on him. There was never any need to even stand up for yourself or defend yourself. You totally blew it all out of proportion, and reacted as such.
While size isn't everything. Size and strength do count for A LOT. CPATs a physical event. So is basketball, MMA, and football... I'm sure there are females that could hold there own in a male league, but on the whole I wouldn't be drafting a whole team of women.
vslsubspam 2 years ago
i never once said anything about having to be big and strong, infact the person who held the record before Bill in his training class was a little 5'6" spunky women! It has nothing to do with size and how strong you are.
kingjeremiah 2 years ago
im guessing this one was a practice test cause i see snow lol i took mine today... did it in 8min 58sec but they couldnt count any of my group because it wasnt 45 degrees outside... it sucked but at least i know i can do it even though im the youngest one in the group lol

I wanted to see what all the CPAT was, I saw all the segments separated, but it really helps to see everything put together and how they walk you through it (as someone who forgets everything, it really helps).
wcfd1987 3 years ago
the hardest thing will be the dummy drag just because of the added friction due to your height. that being said, i'm 5'5" and the cpat is pretty easy. most importantly, make sure you know all the rules; because little things will dq you. for example: in our test, when bill raised the ladder against the wall, he may have been dq'd due to the ladder bouncing off the wall. and finally, TIME DOESN'T MATTER... just pass. good luck. fire fighting is the best job in the world.
umanini 3 years ago
yeah this is parker FD, its where we did our 2nd cpat test. no job opennings yet for Bill, but his is still looking and testing... as for me (Jeremiah) i only took it to prove to everyone on youtube that you can do it cold turkey as long as your in any kind of good shape. thanks and God bless.

JUST passed CPAT yesterday!!
killamike415 3 years ago
excellent job bro!
for those preparing: it's hard to not get caught up in the finish time, but remember it's a pass/fail test. the finish time only matters to yourself.
take a good look at this brother's technique.
Be safe.
