The game actually does get harder as it progresses. You have to short-hop over a Chuckya and a Heave Ho on the same platform in Tick-Tock Clock, there's a drug-induced gauntlet of shit you must go through in Tiny-Huge Island and Bowser in the Sky is entirely invisible.

To those wondering why the cannon is invisible, the cannon doesn't appear unless you're looking down at it for some reason. I'm guessing that's why there's a coin in the middle of the air to use as an indicator.

In Kaizo Fantasy VII, the world map is filled with flame throwers and you don't use an airship. You just climb floating flagpoles. When Aeris dies, you have to jump across a gap into a cannon that appears out of nowhere to get to Sephiroth.
