  • are you tito ortiz?

  • It sounded really good man. Good Job

  • Let's hear it for those 25 minute ukes!

  • Wicked uke and song! "Cause the hate I have for you keeps me warm even when it's two degrees outside"- PMSL! :-) x

  • Love the song, too. I've had that feeling too, kept me warm during a New England snowstorm. I felt better when the hate finally dispersed though, but thankfully I didn't need it for thermal assistance anymore, 'cause spring had come around!

  • Thank you. I sometimes think the hate within me causes global warming.

  • That is so amazing! I love the unique ukuleles made out of something else. I've looked at them online a few times--out of boxes and books and a slew of other things. They're so impressive. I am loving yours! Some day I'll go and get me a Frankenstein Ukulele (made out of bits and pieces :D) 'cause goodness knows I'd never be able to make them for myself. But I sure can admire them!

  • Give it a try. It's not as difficult as it seems once you get started.

  • This is awesome deach!

I think i might have to make me one of those beautiful ukes one day!

  • Thanks, they're fun to make as well as play. Give it a try.

  • Wow, a cigar box Uke.. I've never seen one before now.. It sounds great.

  • Yours should be there by Tuesday/Wednesday.

  • thats really cool! you should make a vid of how to make one, nice tune too, makes me feel like im sitting under coconut palms drinking a cool beer in the sun, even though its snowing outside....

  • Thanks. I filmed myself making one but I'm too lazy to edit it all together.

  • Awesome! Love the song AND the 30 minute uke! Another Deach original!

  • Thanks man!

  • Dude you sent one of these to my buddy they are awesome and sound great! You are gifted.

  • I'm glad he likes it. Gifted? No, it's pretty ghetto really but thanks.

  • Very nice. I love cigar box ukes!

  • Thanks! Want one?

  • Heck yeah! How exactly did you make it?

  • I can't believe you made this in under a 1/2 hour. I have one of these ukes, but I didn't make it..a man named Russ in Pennsylvania did. I play it in my 'dirty jobs' video;-)

  • What you see, I "built" in half an hour. All I did was cut a hole, screw the neck on, screw the bridge/tail piece in and restring it. After the video, I took some time to sand the hole and I carved a piece of ebony to make a better bridge.

  • very cool! : )

  • Thanks Betty!

  • wow, it turned out great! you lex luthier vandross you.

  • lol. Thanks Russ. n_n

  • You must be the best dad ever. All the hamburgesas your family can eat AND you can make a ukulele in under half an hour.

  • AND I have the best wigs!

  • awesommmmmee!!! That songs great, I LOVE the last two lines. Awesome uke!! Your daughter should be very happy!

Did u smoke all the cigars before your used the box? =P

  • Thanks Leslie! No, I don't smoke. The local tobacco shop sells the boxes for a dollar each.

  • Wow. Looks perfectly proportional.

  • The cigar box was almost the same size as the Mahalo's body.

  • A bitter song made sweet by an awesome uke. I dig.

  • Thanks haole!

  • Also I would gladly pay for a custom Deach cigar box uke..... email me a price!

  • I would love to try my hand at making one of these. Think you could send me some plans?

  • I just winged it but I am planning on making another one. Want me make a vid of the build?

  • YES!...That would be terrific. A Deach intructional video in ukulele crafting!

  • Deach McGyver!!

  • LOL. Thanks but it's was pretty easy to do.

  • My bike is broken. Can you turn it into a ukulele for me?

  • LOL. Sure!

  • Doesn't sound too bad for a home made uke!

My daughter has a Mahalo that I nearly lifted the bridge off when I tried to put some Aquila strings on (I had to stop at one)

This looks like a good alternative to throwing it away when it finally comes off.

  • Thanks!. It sounds like it's time to put the other 3 strings on.....

  • great design and great sound! thanks for sharing, deach.

  • Thanks Sebi!

  • Preach on, brother Deach!

I know this one came from the heart.

  • Amen Sistah Adelle!

  • awesome!!

  • Thanks!

  • Verrrry cool! Can I order one? It sounds a lot better than the plastic one I have ;-)

  • Thanks. If you really want one, I can build you one and send it to you. My daughter is about to break another cheap uke.

  • That should probably be part of your process for all of these

Oh, and don't tell my daughter.

  • I love it.

  • Thank you sir.

  • thansk freakn awesome

  • Thanks Nam.

  • pretty sweet there Deach..erm how's the action, and why did you put the bridge on the end of the box? just curious, I always wondered what to do with my old boxes! LOL!

  • The bridge was originally on the top but the action was way too high. I moved it to the bottom and used it as a tailpiece and used a banjo bridge laid on it's side as the bridge. Now the action is slightly above 3 millimeters.

  • I was wrong about the action. It's 1.5 millimeters. Shows I'm terrible and guessing distance.

  • Break more Mahalos! (and improve them as you did this one). Happy song?

  • She has a pink Stagg that she is beating to death. I am sure that will be my next project.

  • sick!

  • Thanks!

  • Wow! Great way to improve a Mahalo ;) Really great. Good singing too :)

    Regards, Wilfried

  • Thanks so much!

  • Is there anything you can't make a uke out of Deach? Baby I'm amazed!

Love the lyrics...the hurt does hang around, doesn't it?

  • Thanks Brad. I'm thinking of making one out of my son's lunch box once school is finished for the year.

  • Cool uke ! and nice song :-)

  • Thank you. Glad you like them.

  • Love it!

  • Thanks!

  • lovely and in tune too - love the bitterness in the song, real tangy!

  • Thank you!

  • "My daughter broke her Mahalo.." Hope she's OK and that she gets her cast off soon.

What can I say? Nice uke, nice (well, not nice, but good) song.

    Cool.

  • LOL. Thanks Tony!

  • ...i'm gonna watch that one again...great stuff deach!

    : )

    p.

  • Thanks Petri!

  • I cant believei got that wrong

it should be the masochist who says hit me and the sadist who says no

    which leads to the question

what is the difference between capitalism and communism

    capitalism man exploits man

communism it is the opposite way around

  • LOL. I knew what you were saying. Thanks again.

  • et trop bien ta petite chanson pour le batiser !! *****

  • Merci! Glad you liked the uke and the song.

  • wha le delire !! il s'ouvre en plus !! trop fort deach, il sonne bien en plus !!! t'es trop fort !! *****

  • Awsome song, and the uke sounds pretty darn good!

  • Thanks! It's definitely a step up from the Mahalo it started of being.

  • sounds good deach.....i've done 3 so far.....and i think only 1 out of the 3 sounded 'almost' as good as that....nice work!

i like what you did with the bridge....what did you use to raise the strings in the back....a piece of dowel or something?

your last line in the song reminded me of "Red Dawn" did you ever see that one?

    cheers,

    todd

  • Thanks Todd. I saw Red Dawn in the theatre - that's how old I am. The bridge is a banjo bridge laid on it's side. When I tried to use it standing up, the action was too high and the intonation was way off.

  • Deachz cuzton ukez. New brand of ukulele. Make me one out of a beer box!

Damn, the song is actually really sweet! Deserves its own video, so we can say it rocks.

  • Thanks John. If I weren't so lazy, I might complete the song.

  • I wonder if the box still smells like cigars. (My cedar top uke smells like cedar wood...) What kind of cigars were stored inside? They must have been huge! It's a great piece you've created there!! (The uke and the song)!

  • I store all my guitar pedals and my preamp in old cigar boxes. They definitely still smell of cigars! Even the cardboard/paper ones retain the smell for as long as I've had them. I love it.

  • Argh... all this talk about cigars... I wanna smoke one now!!

  • I hear ya! I have a Rocky Patel 1992 sitting next to me right now. I bought it to smoke at a festival tomorrow, but Deach's video is tempting my patience :P

  • Thanks. It smells like cedar. There are a few labels on the box. Old Virginian. Madison. Executives. They were made in Honduras. I'm not a cigar smoker so I really don't know what all that means.

  • It opens! You can keep your music inside!

  • I actually wrote my "Japanese" song because it reminded me of a bento box.

  • GhettoFABULOUS! ;) Now your baby's going to go around breaking everything just to have you pimp it out! :)

  • LOL. I hope not.

  • Well alright Deach!!

  • Thank you!

  • Wow, that's really impressive. You honestly have me considering breaking my cheap uke and putting the neck on a cigar box... So cool Deach

  • Thanks. Want me to send my daughter to your place? lol

  • cigar box uke. Awesome !!!

  • Thanks!

  • Sweet!. Who knew you were handy to boot? Great job on the build and the song.

  • Thanks Yopps! It's no ukarine but it was fun to make.

  • Great uke! I'm impressed! The song is cool, too.

  • Thanks Kim!

  • Wow Deach! That is so awesome! It looks and sounds great. I love the blue neck from the Mahalo on it. It makes it look very unique. You've done a great job with it!

The song, and your singing and playing are so lovely! You suit that bluesy sound.

  • Thanks Michelle. It's better than the Mahalo and it smells great too.

  • Very nice, I must admit that this sort of thing is a interest of mine, I wanted to make a cigar box guitar but couldn't find a cigar box, so I've made one out of a whiskey bottle box instead, I have also added a pickup I wound myself, so it's electric, I'm thinking of featuring it in a video soon!

  • That would be cool. I'd love to hear it. I was thinking of adding a pickup to mine as well.

  • Just in my office alone, and without moving from my chair, I can see 6 cigar boxes and 3 ukes. But no cigar box ukes. I should remedy that.

Cool little axe and a sweet number... Deacharific.

  • Thanks Grumpy. I think you should make one. You'd sound great with one.

  • I wish my dad would make me a cigar box uke! Of course, we'd need an ouija board to ask him!

  • Hmmmm a ouija board uke.......

  • I guess you'd only be allowed to play spirituals on it!...:)

  • that sounds pretty awesome dude, and I like the idea of having the bridge on that place

  • Thanks. The bridge is movable. I placed the tailpiece on the bottom to keep the action low.

  • I love the uke ;) haha your singing is also awesome, you really have a speciall sound I really like it :)

  • Thanks so much!

  • I gave up smoking a while back - the urge is back - TY

  • Sorry.

  • Very cool! Deach the luthier. Makes me want to try it. I liked the song too.

  • Thanks Ian!

  • daddy deach makes it all better!

    that thing sounds great!

    you rock!

  • Thanks unclejeff. I'd love to hear you on one of these.

  • Outside is snow

    and it's ten below

    the sadist said hit me

    and the masochist said no

  • lol. Please finish.

  • wow it does actually sound a lot better than a mahalo. what type of strings did you use? nice bluesy tune there

  • Thanks Shane. Worth Clears. The box is cedar.

  • solid or laminate? : D

(i think i wanna sit on both my mahalos—don't let them know i said that...)

    : )

    p.

  • If I made the Mahalo sound half as good as you make yours sound, I would have never given it to my daugter.

  • Superb Deach. It looks and sounds great. AND it's home-made.

  • Thanks Ken. I was waiting for my daughter to break it. I had to pretend to be mad when she did.

  • Good one, you'd do well on Gilligan's Isle.

  • lol. Mrs. Howell in case you had to ask.

  • sweet

  • Thanks!

  • if anyone else needs to get rid of the cigars to use the box i'll try one, i dont smoke but always fancied a try on a big cigar like groucho marx

  • man that looks cool

i got loads of north west pacific art on fish boxes from canada i plan to use one of those one day

  • Thanks krabbers! It was a fun and easy project.

  • Deach the Luthier! Sweet! Sounds better than the Mahalo, doesnt it? What happened to the cigars?

  • Thanks! I'm smoking the cigars in an attempt to have a nice raspy voice like you.
