Personally, I understand the Mastodon comparisons, but I do notice a subtle difference too. I find Mastodon's music a bit more crazy/mental to these guy's laid-back rock and roll style.

Even this song, has a similar structure to "Iron Tusk", if you ask me. But I can't wait to check out more of Baroness, as what I have heard so far is fucking awesome.

I prefer Mastodon's music, but that doesn't mean i don't think Baroness are an amazing group. They both have an epic, intense, aggressive sound that is somehow also spiritual. Their styles of playing are vastly different, both are unique and engaging. Both have what I'm looking for: Vision, originality, and talent.

i saw baroness open for mastodon and high on fire last year. they totally wiped up the floor with them. one of the best live sets i've ever seen. the consensus from the rest of the crowd was pretty much similar. same with the action at the merch booth. perfect blend of the intensity, flow and aggression with a set that flowed seamlessly from instrumental intros into each song with no lag or drop in momentum. all at the same time the band seem to being having a blast on stage.

Just to put a little end to the fucking pointless debate. Baroness and Mastodon both kick cosmic-scale ass. However, I just saw them both live last night and Mastodon is DEFINITELY a studio-superior band. Their live vocals, hell live sound in general was a fucking pathetic joke compared to Baroness who stole the show.

@oz1215 the live clean vocals are still pretty good, considering the fact everyone in mastodon who sings also has an active instrument role in the band, as to in a studio, where vocal tracks are layered and get run through a program that fine tunes the vocals, and the vocal tracks will always be lined up perfectly in the studio. you cant do post editing on live music while its still being performed.

Mastodon is pretty crazy so their drums have to match that tonality, where as Baroness is more of a... I dunno how to describe them. I like them though. As for the singing, I feel that Baroness does a better job sounding like their records, Mastodon kinda hurts me when I see them live and the singing sounds NOTHING like the album. ESPECIALLY oblivion.
