I actually liked Alien3, I appreicated it alot, cus it didnt copy any of the others one bit, but tried 2 do its own thing. It did try 2 capture that same feeling of suspense bk with just the one Xeno like the original first film. And it tried 2 bring closure 2 Ripley's story, which I respected Sigueorney alot 4 choosing 2 do that. Then later she fell 2 Hollywood flashing the right number of bucks 2 reprise her role, which Ive never respected her for since lol.
all three alien movies (the fourth one, piece of shit, doesn't count here) are wonderful pieces of art, film, storytelling and are sci-fi adventures beyond imaginable. but my personal favorite is number three, a very psychological and maybe darker than the first two.
I really liked this film. It was highly artistic like graphic novel style. Dark and gritty as you say. I'm not entirely sure why you don't like this film, you have a lot of nice stuff to say about it, most important of which is that this movie was true to the original alien spirit. Regarding Ripley's change in personality, I don't find it that implausible. She has had two encounters with a nightmarish creature, a little girl and a guy she liked are both dead, and she is in a prison with rapists
and murderers, and she hasn't turned completely reptillian (like in resurection), she was almost raped and had to be saved, she loved the doctor, she was frightened by the alien. But she did have to toughen up to survive this ordeal. As for the death of Hicks and Newt, they weren't really important characters anyway, and they would have slowed down the plot of this movie, this wasn't a chick flick, it was a sci-fi horror flick, and I think it was very well done.
Good review but I don't agrree that it is bad version of the first movie. It has it's own atmosphere. All four movies hs it's own style. This one is closer to first mvie bt it's not version of Scott's Alien. Story? Yes, it's different but it doesn't nesseccery mean that it is bad thing

While i agree that the effects are disappointing, they're not nearly as bad as the gratuitous overuse of green screen in Aliens. Heck the green screen is even a plot device. Aliens also has the worst dialogue of the entire series James Cameron wrote it and James Cameron sucks. Aliens is the worst in the series because it turned the Xenomorphs into bugs instead of truly horrifying monsters.
Alien 3 (the Assembly Cut, only version I've seen) is the 2nd best Alien movie, followed by Resurrection.
I like all of the trilogy, but I think it's off-center to knock Aliens for green screen use compared to 3. Aliens only used compositing for some of the mechanical/explosion scenes. All of the creature effects were shot live, if not always at full scale. 3, on the other hand, used extensive amounts of scale puppetry over real actors. I think aliens should get an award for avoiding green-screening as much as possible. I would recommend checking out the making of.
@doubleKlutch i will agree with you that the Aliens looked better in Aliens! that was also probably due to David Fincher being a first time director without the sway of James Cameron so he got kinda screwed there. i love ALL the Alien movies, it's just that Aliens was the one that turned it into a franchise and feels more forced (all the sequels feel a bit forced, but Aliens became a campy action flick)
also, i will applaud Aliens for being a great setup for Alien3, such a dark beginning!

I didn't mean that Aliens was superior. I love the character of the alien in A3, and aside from sloppy color-correction, I think it was puppet-ed brilliantly; its def my favorite. I was just defending A2's specific avoidance of green-screen use. A2 is certainly the lowest-brow of the trilogy, resorting to obvious, instant gratification candy(which I eat up with relish), but it does it without green-screen.
As for the 'dark beginning'. I'm glad that A3 wasn't just Alienses. The beauty of the franchise isn't about bad-ass marines. But despite my relief, a segway that could have been more believable would've been an improvement over the, "uh, I'll just write in a tragedy here in the margins so we can get FOX some quick cash". It was just obvious plot-hole filler, and that is the slap that Cameron felt. I don't blame him. But I do forgive A3, as it makes up for it in the long run.

There is no way anyone could have survived a xenomorph colony if they were anywhere near as menacing as the aliens in Alien and Alien 3, so in order for someone to actually survive the movie, they had to dilute the aliens significantly, less stealthy, more easily killed, and so they cease to be the ultimate killing machine. More aliens than humans died in Aliens for God's sake! That should not be.
did ya know that there were 3 Facehugers in A L I E N3, one gets Ripply, one gets the dog/OX and, one dies and melts the glass on Newts cryotube. that is why she drowned. this is backed up by the burns on the side of her tube as well. i say that letting the third facehugger play a role in the movie would have been better because it would have made the movie more "its own" than a spin-off of the A L I E N movie because of the chance that there been two aliens. but that is just my thought. }:)

I knew it was carrying a queen, but the scene where the convicts find it dead, if u look, its got webbing, and more of a kinda casing similar 2 the Xenos themselves. Umm, did you know that this movie had lots of problems, fox didn't give them a brake and the script changed during the filming process. To me This movie wins Alien Resurrection by a mile. THIS MOVIE ROCKS!

It is just the same story with other bad secuels (indy 4 star wars4 etc) only those who were kids when this film came out like it. Those whom grow intelectualy finaly realise that alien 3 is an almost incomprenssible shit in david fincher career,...but at the end of the day Alien 3 shucks like Alien 4.
hate this movie, they could have actually made it a great triology. Its like with the Terminator movies. The first two movies are pure epic, then they make a bad movie(tho the 3rd terminator movie didnt suck as much as Alien 3). They should have put a bit more time and effort into it, and they could have actually made a decent ending to a great franshise aka the Starwars triology.
the alien wasn't stop animation it was rod pupets rotoscoped onto live background plates and miniature replica sets (On quadrilogy check out the special effects behind the scenes)
But admittedly the alien did look jerky but i think more so cause it was rotoscoped without a computer and the matt lines were abit to obvious =/

I thought Alien 3 was bad. Then I saw Alien 4. Now Alien 3 looks okay, because I realised it's the last film of any Alien-featuring film made since to be treated as a horror film, the rest were approached as action movies.
The main problem this film suffers from is the fact that they did not have a script to work with. The producers were just throwing ideas and concepts based on other scripts that were done and rejected between "Aliens" and "Alien 3".
i honestly think that the film would have been a lot better if they had gone with the "wooden planet" story, it would have stood out a lot more than being to what Sabbon said as being a rehash of the original "Alien". oh well...
Its possible that the Queen, when she had got onto the dropship that went up into the sulaco in the end of Aliens that she quickly layed some eggs in the back of the dropship, but then again her egg sack had been destroyed so she couldn't form another one for a long time and When Ripley, Bishop and newt had got of the ship, they would have likely noticed that they're were eggs on the ship and since they're must have been other military personnel on the ship they would have noticed too.
@SilentFilicide yeah, he was originally gonna be the protagonist of Alien3, but the producers scrapped the original, much better, storyline for the version that made cinemas. Michael Biehn (actor playing Hicks) was pissed off, but he managed to get them to give him almost as much money for using his likeness in 3 as he made in Aliens, so good for him I guess.
The reviewer smacks or tchips at the end of each thought. Speech teachers coach students to NEVER do that. It was also interesting to get a Brit perspective. US viewers felt like the inmate were just cookie-cutter English imitations of each other and notice this Brit reviewer never brings that up. (I assume it didn't bother him.)
Alien 3 was masterpiece and I hate when people say shit about this film. What did you expect? More women on isolated prison-planet? Superb visual effects on the same one? Many kind persons? Get a life! This film was superb, Sigourney Weaver showed brilliant acting (again) and the ending was so touching
assembly cut doesn't play excellently. it's far far better but the movie moves quite a bit slower. i guess you've got to take into account the fact that it's an assembly cut and not a directors cut. they were just putting back into all the movie all the deleted scenes and sequences. the dog chest burster scene is quite a bit better than the ox scene
I think it's pretty hypocritical to claim alien 3 nearly ruining the series and praising aliens at the same time. Aliens is a pretty good action flick, but seriously, it made the series into the brainless bug hunt it is now known of. Guess I shouldnt complain, has caused the birth of few good shooter games.

I haven't seen this movie yet but I HAVE seen the scene with the Dog Alien. And I have seen the animatronic from the very first movie... And I literally almost vometed when I saw the animatronic. It's like a joke is how bad it is. But a lot of people complain about it not being as good as the previous films. And whenever I hear that I always think, "Wouldn't you prefer good looking visual effects as oppose to an animatronic that took 900 parts to make, and still looks like shit?"

The special edition of alien 3 in the quadrilogy dvd set is a huge improvement over the theatrical release. I know most fans prefer the second movie, Aliens, but there is much to admire in the dark story on Fiorina 161.
Some sci-fi movies take time to appreciate, and alien 3 looks better now than it did then; similar to John Carpenter's "The Thing" which was also panned upon its release, but is now a classic.

Alien3 - brought a much more emotional aspect to the films. For the first 15 minutes or so, we come to terms with newts death. You have the story line between Ripley and the doctor. The doctor dies. Then she finds out she has an alien inside her... and then she has to die herself.
I think the writers shouldn't have killed Newt off in the 3rd film because she could have carried the torch for the Ripley character. From what I remember they changed the Alien 3 script around many times. Newt would have been the logical step in succeeding Ripley.
I love alien 3 it's the most intresting in the hole of the series you learn alot more about the main character "Ripley" Yes i do admit that it was a bummer losing Cpl. Hicks, Newt, also it's got the most swearing and violence i know that don't make a movie but honestly there's incredible acting.

I think the theatrical is etter yes. They cut away un-nessecary scenes and they cut away the scenes where the alien look bad and animated. Its a much better pace and edited than the extended version. The whole intro is different too. Int he extended there is a cow that is infected, but in the theatrical it is a dog.
The egg being on board the sulaco cannot be explained the CGI creature effects look awful. Not the worst in the series but nowhere near the standard of Alien or Aliens.

The first two felt real, and they were just genius. This one did not. Well, then you should love Alien 3. It is the darkest in term of tone and stylization. This is Fincher we're talking about here. The man's signature use of wide angles/shadows/dark colors was still very prevalent in this film.

They're all quite good, i don't see the problem with this one, a lot of loose ends were tied up. Budget constraints, plot shmot, the idea in this installment was to up the anti...change things up a little bit, as they did with avp: requiem. You want to do a review on the awful one then it's called Alien ressurection look it up...it's horrendous.
Considering his original vision, yes I am. He would have needed more to realise it, However, what with the numerous script re-writes and downscaling of s-fx, I think he did really well.

Then the fourth alien movie wouldnt exist. Cause Ripley had to die and she had a chestburster in her. which flows properly in the fourth movie. Cause the queen got ressurected and ripley was a clone.
p.s. a clone of aliens would have been banal as hell. I had no desire to see aliens part 2, but a quality movie, and some respect for the viewer, would not have been too much to ask for, would it?

Anyways, the reason the alien in A3 looked the same despite either animal was because the AC is not a true Director's Cut and the alien design had been finalized only after they decided it would be a dog meaning they couldn't change the design (and it still works as an animal-alien). Watch the Director's cut of Alien 3. There is over a half hour of character development that made the movie so badass. It will forever change your opinion of this movie. It may be a stretch but I like 3 a little more over Aliens now.
I enjoyed Aliens 3, why? because it was dark, gloomy and that was director David Fincher's vision.
Would you believe I shed a few tears when Ripley died in the end I thought after all the bullshit this woman went through this is how it ends for her. It was sad. :(

All 4 Alien movies are 4 different genres (besides sci-fi, of course):
- 1st one is typical horror, unknown enemy, shocking elements etc.
- 2nd is mainly an action movie (guess I don't have to explain why)
- 3rd one is a Thriller
- 4th is a dystopia because of the dark vision of the future where a human life isn't worth shit and profit is all that counts
My favorites are the first and the third, the first for creating horror without being to brutal, the third one for its oppressive setting.

Umm, did you know that this movie had lots of problems, fox didn't give them a brake and the script changed during the filming process. To me This movie wins Alien Resurrection by a mile. THIS MOVIE ROCKS!

Alien3 on its own as a film is great. Some really great performances from British actors. I have to admit when i first saw it when it was released originally i hated it....but over time this one has matured into a great film imo. Any director was going to face the wrath of the critics after James Cameron nailed the sequel and how much it made at the box office. If you take the dark sort of "gothic" thriller aspect of this film then your in for a hidden gem

It is just the same story with other bad secuels (indy 4 star wars4 etc) only those who were kids when this film came out like it. Those whom grow intelectualy finaly realise that alien 3 is an almost incomprenssible shit in david fincher career,...but at the end of the day Alien 3 shucks like Alien 4.

hate this movie, they could have actually made it a great triology. Its like with the Terminator movies. The first two movies are pure epic, then they make a bad movie(tho the 3rd terminator movie didnt suck as much as Alien 3). They should have put a bit more time and effort into it, and they could have actually made a decent ending to a great franshise aka the Starwars triology.

the alien wasn't stop animation it was rod pupets rotoscoped onto live background plates and miniature replica sets (On quadrilogy check out the special effects behind the scenes)
But admittedly the alien did look jerky but i think more so cause it was rotoscoped without a computer and the matt lines were abit to obvious =/

I thought Alien 3 was bad. Then I saw Alien 4. Now Alien 3 looks okay, because I realised it's the last film of any Alien-featuring film made since to be treated as a horror film, the rest were approached as action movies.

The main problem this film suffers from is the fact that they did not have a script to work with. The producers were just throwing ideas and concepts based on other scripts that were done and rejected between "Aliens" and "Alien 3".

Its possible that the Queen, when she had got onto the dropship that went up into the sulaco in the end of Aliens that she quickly layed some eggs in the back of the dropship, but then again her egg sack had been destroyed so she couldn't form another one for a long time and When Ripley, Bishop and newt had got of the ship, they would have likely noticed that they're were eggs on the ship and since they're must have been other military personnel on the ship they would have noticed too.

@SilentFilicide yeah, he was originally gonna be the protagonist of Alien3, but the producers scrapped the original, much better, storyline for the version that made cinemas. Michael Biehn (actor playing Hicks) was pissed off, but he managed to get them to give him almost as much money for using his likeness in 3 as he made in Aliens, so good for him I guess.

The reviewer smacks or tchips at the end of each thought. Speech teachers coach students to NEVER do that. It was also interesting to get a Brit perspective. US viewers felt like the inmate were just cookie-cutter English imitations of each other and notice this Brit reviewer never brings that up. (I assume it didn't bother him.)

Alien 3 was masterpiece and I hate when people say shit about this film. What did you expect? More women on isolated prison-planet? Superb visual effects on the same one? Many kind persons? Get a life! This film was superb, Sigourney Weaver showed brilliant acting (again) and the ending was so touching

assembly cut doesn't play excellently. it's far far better but the movie moves quite a bit slower. i guess you've got to take into account the fact that it's an assembly cut and not a directors cut. they were just putting back into all the movie all the deleted scenes and sequences. the dog chest burster scene is quite a bit better than the ox scene

Aliens is a pretty good action flick, but seriously, it made the series into the brainless bug hunt it is now known of. Guess I shouldnt complain, has caused the birth of few good shooter games.

all of this leads up to resserection, thats the main point in this movie the queen in aliens didnt even hide IN the craft, just hung on. [and held its breath lmao] i agree wit most of aimtrues comments. 39th anniversary of aien, the awsome franchise. i like the bishop part that was cool, but why did everyone die in the beginin? sad [ i know why just didnt want it 2 happen] nice endin for ripely and her clonin begins, thanks to her continuous nosebleeds in the other nose bleeds..good idea

I haven't seen this movie yet but I HAVE seen the scene with the Dog Alien. And I have seen the animatronic from the very first movie... And I literally almost vometed when I saw the animatronic. It's like a joke is how bad it is. But a lot of people complain about it not being as good as the previous films. And whenever I hear that I always think, "Wouldn't you prefer good looking visual effects as oppose to an animatronic that took 900 parts to make, and still looks like shit?"

The special edition of alien 3 in the quadrilogy dvd set is a huge improvement over the theatrical release. I know most fans prefer the second movie, Aliens, but there is much to admire in the dark story on Fiorina 161.
Some sci-fi movies take time to appreciate, and alien 3 looks better now than it did then; similar to John Carpenter's "The Thing" which was also panned upon its release, but is now a classic.

Alien3 - brought a much more emotional aspect to the films. For the first 15 minutes or so, we come to terms with newts death. You have the story line between Ripley and the doctor. The doctor dies. Then she finds out she has an alien inside her... and then she has to die herself.
But your right, it should have ended with Alien3.

I think the writers shouldn't have killed Newt off in the 3rd film because she could have carried the torch for the Ripley character. From what I remember they changed the Alien 3 script around many times. Newt would have been the logical step in succeeding Ripley.

People didn't want a gorier rehash of the first Alien, they wanted a new film in the franchise that took the series to new heights.
This movie was just too much of a monster movie, and not enough science fiction.
The first half of the film has it's merits but in the end it just turns the corner of lackluster and campy.

I think the theatrical is etter yes. They cut away un-nessecary scenes and they cut away the scenes where the alien look bad and animated. Its a much better pace and edited than the extended version. The whole intro is different too. Int he extended there is a cow that is infected, but in the theatrical it is a dog.

The first two felt real, and they were just genius. This one did not. It was as though a stranger had written it, like it was nothing but a bad fanfiction that, like I said, did not stay true to the story whatsoever. You can hate the fact that I depised this movie, but it won't change my mind even in the slightest.

aliens..ok it was awsome..but where was the horror?it is a horror sci-fi...so it gets back to its roots with alien3...it was too dark...love the oppening sequence..makes your stomach squeeze...

Well, then you should love Alien 3. It is the darkest in term of tone and stylization. This is Fincher we're talking about here. The man's signature use of wide angles/shadows/dark colors was still very prevalent in this film.

Very underated film in the franchise. Top credit has to go to the score of this film aswell from Elliot Goldenthal. Very dark, probably the best score in the franchise

I DID like Alien3! The Assembly Cut is the ONLY version of the film I liked though, as the Theatrical Version was pretty poor, with plot holes and a rushed feel to it. And, all movie reviews on youtube (and in the world) are simply opinion, always feel what you want to about the film. I'm just trying to shed some light on some areas of the film I would like to discusss with others. But thanks for the comment!

Yep. Assembly cut is on the Alien Quadrilogy. It's almost an extra half an hour long, and feels like an entirely different movie.

Budget constraints, plot shmot, the idea in this installment was to up the anti...change things up a little bit, as they did with avp: requiem. You want to do a review on the awful one then it's called Alien ressurection look it up...it's horrendous.

Anyways, the reason the alien in A3 looked the same despite either animal was because the AC is not a true Director's Cut and the alien design had been finalized only after they decided it would be a dog meaning they couldn't change the design (and it still works as an animal-alien). He just doesn't do research.

Most of the budget and stuff was already spent when he got there. He did well to keep it from going insanely over-budget.

Alien 3 sucks fucking nuts. The second half of the movie just descends into a pile of meaningless, silly, bullshit that I couldn't put up with.

Im not a big alien fan.. but i bought the the 4 films on the dvd box set last year.
I saw these movies for the first time back to back...alien III was shit. I liked the first one, nothing beats the first film alien ! aliens the sequel was ok...

Watch the Director's cut of Alien 3. There is over a half hour of character development that made the movie so badass. It will forever change your opinion of this movie. It may be a stretch but I like 3 a little more over Aliens now.

I enjoyed Aliens 3, why? because it was dark, gloomy and that was director David Fincher's vision.
Would you believe I shed a few tears when Ripley died in the end I thought after all the bullshit this woman went through this is how it ends for her. It was sad. :(

The eggs wasn't in the escape pod, it was in the landing gear of the dropship. The queen laid it there on the trip from the colony to the Sulaco.

He died in the opening evac scene. In the special features you can see a mock up of his mangled body, vrushed by an I beam. Sucks.
