  • @anuchandrox I care more about the food and recipes. If you are upset enough to comment about the chef's coffee consumption, either take it for what it's worth or don't watch the videos.

  • @CHONDURAS i too care abt his food and recipes,i'm upset cos i watch his vids for his stories too.nd it seemed as if he was makin them all up.thts y i commented

  • @anuchandrox listen to the video again----carefully....since I didn't drink coffee...must mean he wasn't a coffee drinker in school. Maybe he is now.

  • Thankyou Vahchef... I tried Upma today... It was delicious.. !!!

  • this is not good video

no roasting to make it simple is okay if it always cook okay. but does it?

    what is more simple:

    A. pan and a lid for final steam cooking

    Or,

    B. pan and no lid?

I think "A". And to make it perfect if roasting is done because final lid covered steaming will be omitted, then I am okay with that. Many kitchens will not have lid.

    What is Urad wash?

Apart from lid/no-lid; roasting/no-roast recipe is still too complicated. Still too many ingredients. redo this

  • 2:28 =)

  • Your background speech about the recipe also attractive..

  • @nishantvshah thank a lot frnd...

  • i made upma this morning, but i guess i put more oil than required. after cooking time it bcomes stiff, is it bcoz of more oil? i ve two more queries

    1) wat should b the ratio of water n suji?

2)can i add little quantity of lemon juice?

    thank you....love ur recipe

    thank you...love ur recipe

  • @datta123ify if it becomes stiff it means that the water was less. 1) 2 cups of water for 1 cup of upma is a standard measurement, you can add in 1/4 cup more if it becomes stiff. 2) you can give it a try with lemon. Never done that though :)

  • Well Upoo = Salt and Maav = Flour

But if you do the English translation as per Kerala style

Upoo = Salt and Maav = Mango Tree

So English translation of Upma is SALT MANGO TREE hahaha

Just type "Salt Mango Tree" in search for this famous Malayalam Comedy

  • thanks Sanjay! my mom used to prepare upma but now she lives away from me. so i prepared it myself and had its taste after 3 long years. i am a happy man now!

  • too much oil!! ull get cholesterol!

  • @rickypandey

are you serious? You'll get cholesterol? you body makes a cholesterol, its a base for hormones, not a disease

  • Dear Sanjay, Thank you very much for all your lovely & practical recipes. I have enjoyed all of them. Please show us in the near future, how to make idlees, venpongal & various types of paayasams.

  • Hi sanjay,

upma would always become very dry or very liquidy whenever i tried, thanks for the measurements, it came just right it tasted well.

thanks for inspiring me to cook :-)

  • 4:55 Re: unexpected guests...

If I had unexpected guests in the early morning i'd slap them silly! However, If I had to make it I would with Pistachios instead of peanuts and Lard (pig fat) instead of regular oil.

That should keep the vegetarians and certain religious groups from sticking their fingers into my upma.

  • So you don't mind meat eaters sharing it? You have something against vegetarians?

  • ktkbar - I don't have anything against vegetarians - infact i think they are probably more noble than carnivores. I'm just not up there yet - In my journey, I take great pride and much joy in ghee, lard and duck fat; they are my friends. And I think duck fat is my BFF.

  • Really good! I have always had struggle to cook Indian food. Now its no more a tiresome job, I am always looking forward to do something new, my next try will be the sambar recipe. where can I find coconut powder?? I live in the US, CA

  • Great upma....one of the best I have cooked ever. You go chef .....keep up the great work . All your recipes are amazing and your website rocks.

  • thanks sanjay. made this today and it came exactly (almost) as it was made at home.. and it doesn't take much time either. thanks again.

  • Really...without rosting suji upma is possible?will it not feel raw...hmm I hv to experiment once then....

  • Hey Chef ,

thanks for uploading this vedio .........i had compelety written myself off when it came to making upma , whenever i tried making it , it would always turn out to be either sloppy or had lots of lumps in it .....

I made upma today after watching ur vedio and it turned out to be soooooooooooo good , i still can't believe that i was able to make delicious upma finally ......

    thanks again

  • Hi Chef.. I do not know how often you read these comments..., but I would like to let you know that I'm impressed with the way you present, your simplicity and your down to earth nature... Gr8 job !!!

  • I completely agree with you. Infact this the quality I like about this chef a great deal. His enthusiasm and his interaction with the audiance is simply amazing.

  • all you cooking are really amazing and easy to follow it. thankyou so much.

  • Where is the urad wash? When does that go into the upma?

  • is there another name for suji? i dont think suji and grits are the same, are they?

  • Sooji is Semolina. You can buy Semolina in good supermarkets.

  • i think its generally called wheatlets or semolina... its pretty common in north america, and is an important breakfast cereal ingredient...

look in the flour section in the supermarket

  • its called semolina.

  • Hi I could never make upma before coz wen I used to add hot water to suji it just wud become soooo lumpy.

I loooooved ur recipe and made a perfect upma coz it turns out adding suji to water is easier than vice versa :)

But I have a query my mother in law suggested if I roast the suji it will become easier to digest..... what do you say???

  • it becomes more flavorful have fun

  • @vahchef add 1 cup of slightly sour buttermilk, one cup of water and make upma and taste it! you will like it. Or you can squeeze few drops of lime juice at the end and enjoy the taste

  • classic south indian dish, thanks

  • Keep up the tasty-work!

  • Excellent!

  • Excellent! Keep up the TASTY-WORK!

  • hey all u vahrehvah lovers out there.. I welcome you to join the o r k u t community vahrehvah lovers

  • Thank you so much. I miss my God mother whom introduced me her punne upma.. Thanks

  • The ingredient list at the beginning lists urad dhal, but you don't seem to add it in the pan.

If you would add it, during which part of the cooking would you do so?

  • i added after frying peanuts ,it was edited out

  • Umpa is a simpele and tasty at any time .

Eating in banana leaf with ginger chutney,

    vareh vah kya maza ayega.

  • sanjay,

can we use 'thin lassi' (yogurt & water) instead just water?

this way we can have some protein. Also some forzen mix vegetables? for some vitamins.

    What do you think?

  • yes ,you can use milk ,buttermilk ,since this is basic upma i used water ,we will be trying many upmas

  • When I make uppuma, I add some coconut powder as well as dried red chillies when you fry the curry leaves. That gives an excellent flavor. I love to eat uppuma. You can eat it bananas.

  • hi all your videos are really helpful for us to cook in professional way.. thanx a bunch.. can u pls post rice variety also like tomato rice, brinjal rice, etc. thnx
