airodump-ng will not work for most people because you need to get a USB wireless card capable of packet injection. The cards in most desktops or laptops are not compatible. Cracking wep is not only about getting the right software its also about getting the right Hardware. You can try the Aplpha 1000mw or 500mw which i recommend and all problems are solved instead of posting a whole bunch of comments taking up youtube space

Are you using VMWare to use backtrack 4? If so, you can not use built-in wireless cards, only USB network adapters. And try to start networking, too. /etc/init.d/networking start <-- type that in the konsol
