i just laughed my ass off with my 15 yr old daughter at the hat. she said "what do you think the rest of the guys in the band are thinking" i said "they are thinking he's an asshole but he's mick jagger so just let him go"!!!! the king of rock and roll since elvis died.
You better believe some rightous synchronicity was @ work when Keef met Mick @a train station, Mick carrying a Muddy Waters album, baby, that was Rock & Roll !!, & they never looked back...the soundtrack of MY life, for sure; they've raised me up so many times when things looked bleak. These guys never get credit for their dynamite lyrics, btw, they're funny, ironic, sardonic, cataclysmic, & oh yeah, EROTIC to da bone, witness Let It Bleed, &, oh yeah, Parachute Woman...dig the lyrics...Rock On!
I love these old videos but I hate the fact that the band is not really playing. Anyone have any insight as to why they did it that way back then? At least Mick still sings though.
@youtoobisokayiguess i asked my very good friend who played totp, he told me they do whats called a "tv mix" whether or not mick is singing karaoke style i dont know my friend plays guitar mostly and said he had to record the song just before the show and i forgot to ask him if the singer sings live
Yo naci el 72 pero estos tios marcaron mi juventud, llenod e rebeldia , keria ser como ellos , un grande, contra el orden de injusticia establecido..!!
1971 was in my opinion when The Stones sounded their best, they had a tremendous lead guitar player in Mick Taylor and the the rest of the magnificent Stones were at their incredible best.. I went to see them at the Garden right before I went to travel all over Europe when I was only 17. What an incredible year that was!!
Mick is mesmeric on this and he sings the absolute shit out of it. His phrasing is even better than the record and the record is class. As for Keith he is the epitome of ragged rock n' roll cool, like a wolverine in the dusk. Incredible to think this was Jagger's song, although Keith transposed it to open chords & turned it into this masterpiece of rock n' roll. Now that's what you call a partnership.
@robster71 Did you know that most TOTP performances were mimed or sung over pre recorded instrumentals? I had to listen closely to the drums to find out this was a truly live performance in addition how there are fewer backing vocals here.

The reason the vocal is different is that they are miming to the recorded track, all except Mick, whose mic is live. Check at 1:43 when they pan over Charlie's drums: they're covered with cardboard to muffle them. TOTP is a miming show, and the Stones did this other times too: Mick singing live over the tracks. Still a great song though. . . .
i've seen some footage of concerts by the stones, and keith didnt play much lead. was he always the lead guitarist? i know, this might sound stupid, but i just want to make sure.
@PAULisDEADMANnumber9 Keith is the rhythm guitarist of the Stones who can play lead when he decides to do so but I've always considered him the rhythm to Brian, of course Taylor, and even Ronnie plays lead for them most all the time these days.
Back to the time in rock music when it had an honesty, credibility and virilty about it. How could any band fail when you got a front-man in his late-20's in his pomp like that?! Great song. And when he goes off up the aisle doing his punch-walk dance, just hilariously brilliant.
I remember vividly seeing this on TV first time around - Thursday night, in a pub crowded with rough builders on pay night. Every one of them was transfixed by this performance, and not one said a word 'til it was over.
@hhelpmaboab - I also remember when this was first on TOTP. I also seem to remember that this was one of three numbers they did as a short set. TOTP were doing a weekly "Album Slot " back then - and as they'd just released Sticky Fingers, they also did Wild Horses and (I think) Bitch. Now THAT would be worth seeing again !!! - but for some reason only Brown Sugar seems to have survived.
Easily one of the band’s top 5 songs, much better than anything that Merseybeat crowd ever produced. If God could play guitar, He would have been in The Rolling Stones!
Mick Jagger is so uncool he's actually cool.

All kinds of inaccurate lyrical renditions out there. Check out the "real" words... Jagger at his brilliant lyrical best:
Gold Coast slave you bound for cotton fields
Sold in the market down in New Orleans
Scared old slaver really doin' alright
Here him whip your women just around midnight... the rest clearer... fantastic Mick.
MrKwelly 1 year ago
@MrKwelly The Rolling Stones would not have been as good without Keith Richards at all, they would reach at least halfway where without Mick Jagger

I presume that this is Mick Taylor playing guitar. This would have been after Brian Jones either left/died and before Ron Woods came on board.
