@TheCloverGal I got the Educational Picture collection for Christmas but I haven't seen that one yet. Incidentally, what do you think of the shorts he did for Educational Pictures? Not a lot of people seem to know about them and most of those that do don't like them, and they're not as memorable as the COPS chase scene or the outrageous stunts of Sherlock Jr., but I think Buster is STILL very funny in them.
@TheBookWorm1718 I enjoy most of them, actually. It makes me sad sometimes when he's stuck with sub-par writing and co-stars, and they're certainly nothing like his own shorts, but you can still see his sparkle and I like to think I can pick out gags he came up with. He had true talent and could make anything he put his hands on good and funny, even if they're not as amazing as his own films. (Not to mention I adore his voice, anyway.) I think they deserve more attention, at the very least.
@TheCloverGal The thing of it is Educational Films was supposed to be sort of a return to his original comedy, this was after he had gotten away from MGM and he seemed to have more creative control again. Watching some of them they DO look like they would've worked as his silent shorts and I can't help but wonder if at this point in his career he was actually bothering with scripts, or still just set up camera and start filming stuff?
@TheBookWorm1718 Well, I'm not entirely sure how much creative control he actually did have with the Educational films. While I don't know how much he was allowed to contribute to the stories and gags, I do know he couldn't spend time on them like he wanted to; all they cared about was spitting a two-reeler out, not make a piece of art like he did.(Whether he'd admit it or not!)
Makes one wonder what he could have done if they gave him as long to work on them as he wanted...
@TheCloverGal True but one thing about Buster, once he got out of MGM and once he started putting his life back together, it didn't always seem to matter to him what he did, so long as he stayed busy and kept working. He doesn't get credit for all the Spanish and German movies he did and dubbed over one line at a time, now that would keep somebody busy, and it got to a point he could speak one's language with another's accent. Keeping busy kept him going.
@TheBookWorm1718 You're absolutely correct. If he wasn't working he felt unwanted, according to Eleanor at least. And really, he never did stop working.
@TheCloverGal And if you think about it, in a sense it's kind of a good thing he got screwed by MGM and his first wife. Biggest disguise a blessing could wear I know, but think about it, if she hadn't taken him for all he had and he was a big success and a millionaire off his films like Charlie Chaplin and Harold Lloyd...well, they made millions when he only made $2,000 a week, and he pointed out he was still working and happy when they had retired and become recluses.
@tgreywolfe1 Good for him/her, I think I was about that age when I first saw him too...at that time I didn't get the big fascination Buster, I was more into the whole of the silent comedies, but he is my favorite these days.
What's not known in this is that he broke his collarbone, neck, and almost drowned during some of these takes of stunts he thought up and executed all himself!
@bibi5027: Good point! By all accounts (with the exception of his ex-wives and girlfriends) he was a delightful guy. Check out this vid in which he kibitzes at bridge and signs autographs for a group of children -- " . . . the neighborhood kids ask if Buster can come out to play" -- tells us a lot about the man:
Un genio.. Nada más... Un ejemplo para imitar por los actores comicos y una verguenza para quienes no se esfuerzan en perfeccionar sus habilidades actorales
There's an obscure juggler from Dallas that could do justice to Buster. He's even got precisely the right build. But I fear that by now he's too old. :(
I actually prefer Keaton's subtle stoicism to Chaplin's exaggerated expressions. Not that one is better than another; I just love that Buster can get into the most absurd situations and never lose his composure.
This is the video that got me started. I am proud to say that I have now seen every movie this guy has made up until he went to MGM. He's incredible. Great video.
Keaton stated on the vaudvillestage at age 3, billed as a midget wit ha false beard, his fathr would toss him around to break funiture and things to great laughs, Buster prided himself on studying and learning how to fall, and make a show show of it. that with his dead pan expression is wht he is known for best.
Jackie Chan is the only person I can think of who's comparable, in his athletic ability, to Keaton. Jackie spent his entire childhood in rigorous acrobatic and martial arts training, and Keaton spend his entire childhood in (less formal) physical training from being thrown around by his dad on the stage. So both of them started very young and had years of practice. I think they're both amazing, although I am personally fonder of Keaton.
2:05 comes from 'The High Sign', where Buster gets a job at a shooting gallery. I just watched the whole thing on youtube last week. I'm pretty sure you can find it easily, but if you have any trouble, let me know.
Like the saying goes "often imitated, never duplicated".Every imitation is just that, and often painfully self-conscious.Plus Buster had that beautiful face that made the women fall for him then and still has the same effect.
@MrLawrenceV Actually, not to take anything away from Buster, but Jackie Chan has come close in several of his. I wouldn't be surprised if Buster was an influence of Jackie's.
Buster also was very involved in the technological end of film making and is considered to have had a strong influence on early film making and directing.

Its a nice idea but Carrey's too tall. and hes not athletic enough, keaton had to be so physically fit to be able to do all his stunts. plus keaton was famous for doing everything with no expression on his face at all (hence his commedy being called "dead-pan"), Carrey is famous for making silly faces.
I love jim Carrey but he's notright for the job. I cant think of anyone who would be. i recon the only person in the history of film who could play keaton is, funilly, charlie chaplin...
@devsie22 Yeah, if anybody was to play Buster I'd nominate a virtually unknown juggler named Rob Williams, from Dallas. He is short, athletic, agile, handsome, and personable. Perfect for the part. Though they'd have to un-age him to play a young buster.
@devsie22 Jim Carrey might have been good about thirty years ago. He used to be really athletic; he did a lot of his own slipstick stunts. Plus, he did a great job of getting into the character of Andy Kaufman.
Now he's older, though, and he's trying to get into serious work. Plus, nothing is ever as funny as the original.
There are still a couple of clips I can't identify -- dangling from the chandelier in his underwear, dancing with the girl he dumps on the floor... Actually most of the dancing.
@ubermom I think the chandelier-dangling clip is from his 1941 short 'General Nuisance'. It's a rehash of a gag in 'Doughboys'.
In the other clip he *is* the girl that is dumped on the floor. That clip is from 'Doughboys', where they're putting on a show for the rest of the troops.
That front of the house that fell on him and through himreally weighed a few tons. If he was just an inch or two over the wrong way, he would have been killed.
absolutely magnificent! yeah, i think he was pretty cute too! what an amazing talent he was-----it's a shame a lot of people don't know more about him. thanks so much for posting this video--makes me smile!
It's amazing what he could do and come away unscathed! Jackie Chan might have been inspired by Keaton, even! His expressionless "stone face" gives him a sort of "just another day for me" kinda vibe.
See? I didn't even know that I could instantly see the connection! XD Well, a lot of people (and certain robots with names that start with 'W') have been inspired by Keaton.
Amazing montage for an amazing man. Now somebody needs to do one that includes the kisses -- like when he throttled Marion Mack before kissing her, or (best of all!) the wrestling liplock with Charlotte Greenwood in "Parlor, Bedroom and Bath".
There was one by the same person who posted this a while ago. I believe it was called Buster Keaton Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman, but I haven't been able to find it now. It was done to the Bryan Adams song and was excellent as is this one.
4:10 he broke his neck doing this one and didn't even realise until a doctor checkup several years later when the doctor askd when he'd broken his neck. Lol

Jim Carrey isnt as likeable. He is annoying in his comedic roles. ESOTSP was OK.

My professor told my class that someone had to push the house on 4:37 to fall down.

There are still a couple of clips I can't identify -- dangling from the chandelier in his underwear, dancing with the girl he dumps on the floor... Actually most of the dancing.
ubermom 2 years ago 2
@ubermom I think the chandelier-dangling clip is from his 1941 short 'General Nuisance'. It's a rehash of a gag in 'Doughboys'.
In the other clip he *is* the girl that is dumped on the floor. That clip is from 'Doughboys', where they're putting on a show for the rest of the troops.

@ubermom -Buster is the girl in that scene

Keaton did all of his own stunts.

That front of the house that fell on him and through himreally weighed a few tons. If he was just an inch or two over the wrong way, he would have been killed.
Wow!

absolutely magnificent! yeah, i think he was pretty cute too! what an amazing talent he was-----it's a shame a lot of people don't know more about him. thanks so much for posting this video--makes me smile!

He had guts!
He had beautiful eyes, and I thought he was handsome!

It's amazing what he could do and come away unscathed! Jackie Chan might have been inspired by Keaton, even! His expressionless "stone face" gives him a sort of "just another day for me" kinda vibe.

He was and mentioned Keaton in a book he wrote.

See? I didn't even know that I could instantly see the connection! XD Well, a lot of people (and certain robots with names that start with 'W') have been inspired by Keaton.

He's like a living Norman Rockwell character!

Want another good video? Try : BK Dont Bring Me Down (done to ELO's music.) It's good also.
