for the second chord you can play the Dmaj barre chord (X57775) or (XX777X) it sounds ok.I know the way he is showing is the corect way and sounds better but to make it easier when your just messing around try one of those D chords......you the man marty
marty can you help? i really struggle with getting my ring finger and pinky to go where i want them to, like in this song from the first chord to the second. I'm guessing you'll probably say practice but i've been playing for about 5 months now and it doesn't seem to be getting better. Do you have any tips/drills to do in order to get better with this? Great video as always! :)
@capturedbytee Yes I know sometimes this can be confusing. What you do in this case for CMaj7 is you lay your index finger across all strings on the 3rd fret except the 6th. This is called a barre chord. So in other words you will be using just one finger your index to cover all the strings except the 6th on the 3rd fret. You would then would put your middle finger on the 3rd string 4th fret then your ring finger on the 5th fret 4th string and your pinky on the 2nd string 5th fret
@capturedbytee Yeah you should try to learn familiarize yourself with barrre chords.Start with the basic major chords [ A chord such as G is assumed to be major unless otherwise indicated] If you learn a F barre chord shape all you have to do is move that same shape up two frets and it is now a G chord. So using that logic what would chord would you have if you moved up two frets from G ?.....
@meglaw69 Thanks for the explaining barre chords. I really don't know the answer as I just picked up my very first guitar ever just yesterday so have everything to learn and don't know where to start so I thought of learning to play this. Thanks for your help :-)
@capturedbytee Oh no problem. For every fret you move a barre chord you move it 1/2 of a step.So if you were to play an F barre chord. [which is a barre chord on the first fret] and you were to move that chord shape up 1 fret it would be F# the next fret would be G then G# then A then A# then B. then C there is no such thing as B# etc. So in other words if you learn one chord shape you've already learned a lot.The answer to my last question is question is A .Two frets from G,G# A,
@capturedbytee Just to continue my point. See even though the Cmaj7 chord uses only two notes on the 3rd fret we can use one finger to cover the entire fret except for the 6th string E because. the other strings on the 3rd fret that you are covered will not sound because your middle finger is playing a note on the third string 4th fret.So in other words if i finger the 3rd string on the 3rd fret and also the same string on the 4th fret i will only hear the note being played on the 4th fret.
oh my goodness i saw this video before and i just tried it right now and i got it already, i'm 15 and i'm grateful for you and your videos, props to you sir.
Dude, you have accomplished in two days what my best friend couldn't do in 9 years. If I need to learn any song, I go to your videos first. You really break it down for slow people like myself, lol. Keep it up!
Marty you are f&*$ing awesome dude. You''ve taught me well. Ive started playing the guitar last summer and with your help, I have learn alot and its enabled me to literally fall in love with my guitar!! You must check out my video with my sister.. I know at this stage im still colossally pants so im open to criticism as long as its constructive. Cheers Mate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I say that Marty is a great teacher, unlike my brother who does teach me most of what I know, including musical theory and guitar theory. Although my brother has taught me a lot, I can say that Marty can teach me songs faster, and with less hassle than my brother can. Thanks, Marty.
What I really like about your videos is that you start with a demo. That way I know what it's going to sound like, and as you're teaching the chords I recognize the sounds better from the song.
Is there a way you can put the rhythm for the second part? The first part you go slowly and say DDDDUDD and stuff, but on the second part you don't. It takes me forever to get the rhythm right without it being shown slowly.
I'm having trouble switching the chords, they're pretty difficult for me like the E minor and E min 9, I have to stretch my fingers to get them. Any advice from fellow guitar players?
@boomshockalockaa Keep switching the chords repeatedly WITHOUT strumming, after sometime it will seem natural. keep doing it no matter how long it takes (days/weeks) cos you will get it eventually
man i love this song so much and i can't believe i picked it up.it's been a week since i started learning and i've already picked up 15 songs, most of them from ur lessons.I love u man(no homo)

Hey Marty I can't seem to get to the request link I would love a lesson on Tin Pan Alley, by SRV please please please........please! thanks you could break it down into 4 parts maybe? I know its a long song but sounds incredible :-)
@MaddSkillz08 Well what you wanna do to begin with is learn how to switch between the chords really slowly. So say start with first chord and let it ring for four beats and then right after that play the 2nd chord for four beats and then back to the first chord. Also move your fingers as little as possible. Only move the necessary fingers to change chords. Hope that helps a bit.
and thanx for that 4th chord (Amin 7) i could never figure out wat the chord was so i would just hit the A note on the E string.thanx

Noob questions here.
1) 2:00 Do you really press the Low E string too? Did you use the bottom of the index finger?
2) What's do the Xs and 0s mean?
Thanks!

@capturedbytee X means don't play that string at all Os mean play the string without a finger on it. Pay it open

@baxtersave96 Thanks for that! But what about the 2:00 C Major 7. I have only four fingers but 5 strings are pressed, is that correct?

Just playing with it, I think that in the chorus part, Cmaj7 -> A7, every second Cmaj7 should actually be a Csus2.
So Cmaj7 the first time, then A7, to Csus2, then back to the A7, and repeat.
Try and out and see with the recording, but I'm pretty sure it sounds better this way.
Thanks for another great lesson Marty! Keep em coming!
