  • interesting!!!!

  • The most obvious question was not asked. WHY do they still speak french in Senegal in the year 2011??

  • this totally made my day.

  • The best Arabic speakers our in Senegel and the late Cheik Anta Diop said that Wolof is the closest you can get to the ancient Egyptian language today.

  • nice

  • The brother with the green shirt on is sexy! He can teach me how to speak wolof and french anyday! lol, Great video! :)

  • ?? Don't more people speak either Wolof or Fulfuulde? Where did this man get Arabic from?

  • @lionzion22 the religion

  • Thank you for this informative video.

So 'Nagadef' is 'How are you?'

And 'Maingifile' is 'I'm fine, thank you.'

Unfortunately, it is difficult to find any Wolof language books or CDs. Can anyone recommend any?

  • @Amfortaz Na nga def= how are you. Ma ngi fi rekk= I'm well Jam rekk= peace

  • I love senegal..is a ospital country , teranga 3

  • The presenter of this video is quite wrong. Senegalese do NOT speak Arabic at all. It is only used inside religion, and most Senegalese muslims do not ever learn what the Arabic words mean because as children they just learn to copy the sound of the Arabic words spoken by imams or maribout.

Also the Wolof spoken by Gambians differs only in the slight variations of accent, as is true all over the Wolof speaking diaspora.

This confusion should be cleared up.

  • Thank you for uplaoding. It helps me a lot... I am studying Wolof by myself now. sometimes its really hard to find native spaker's pronunsciation. Thank you so much.

  • what? arabic?i've never knew senegal spoke arabic........they only speak french and wolof (as i learned today)for the fact i've never knew wolof is a langauge.

  • It's tue gambian have a different wolof. The proof is that we all laugh when we hear them speak wolof.

  • I am full blooded Senegalese ,wolof, but I am really upset when I hear those people degrading Gambians, saying they don't speak good wolof.Stop talking nonsense, wolof is spoken diferently from the North to the center for exemple,my mother is from Walo,my dad from baol, they speak with different accent ,sometimes different words.

Gambian wolof is as good as the one they speak in any part in Senegal.

  • two languages should not br spoken in africa and that is franch and arabic but we know why those are there....damn it.

  • dont know why people are getting annoyed about this video in their comments here.... look on Wikipedia (Wolof people): "40% of Senegal's population are native speakers of Wolof, 94% of Senegalese, including non-Wolofs, can speak the language."; Wolof Empire: "The Wolof Empire or Jolof Empire (French: Diolof or Djolof) was a medieval West African state that ruled parts of Senegal and The Gambia from 1360 to 1890."... they are just stating facts..they didn't say gambians dont speak good wollof.

  • thanks for the history lecture. :-)... i was refering to his gambia comment. @1.24 he said "some pple don't speak good wolof, eg gambia" he corrected himself after putting his foot in his mouth!!!.

  • WTF did u mean, gambians don't speak good wollof? ofcourse we speak wollof differently, we have different accent. senegalese includes some french words in their wollof and gambians use some english words in their wollof. what makes u think yours is better than ours?

  • Don't worry honey I am Senegalese and really attracted to the way you speak woloff, those people who think different are just ignorant.Woloff spoken in Gambia is just sweet.

  • jerejef my brother :-) i am a gambian but my parents are from senegal. my dad is from futa and my mom is from thies. I've never been there but will visit someday...inshallah!

  • You welcome bro.

  • Thank you. As you have expressed there are many different perspectives on one's culture, and no matter how accurate you may try to be, it will never be completely encompassing. Your addition to the discussion is appreciated, so that we can better understand Senegal.

  • as ive been telling ya next time u hafi trinna find out goodhearten ppl dat really do know about de real lovely of SENEGAL ya digg,I can swear dat diz 2 bredaz neva got out from karda(dakar backwards)

  • but what is such amazing dis sooo different groups living together as one ppl SENEGA di whola dem brodaz and sistaz....u get in a public car you could see a peul teasing a djola widout even knowing him or

  • @cooldany they did mention diola, serere and toucouleur (poular) and so on… but they’re to say that wolof is main language ‘cause it’s the most spoken language in that country.

  • in the kinda center i mean sine or saloum its highly serer in the south ppl speaking mancagne jola soce bassari in di est side ppl highly speaking bambara sarakhole peul...

  • @cooldany the majority of them speak or understand wolof. When a serere is teasing an halpulaar (dendiraagal) usually he’s doing it in Wolof! Wolof is the lingua franca in Djolof!

  • Thank you for your response. It is fascinating to see how languages evolve over time in response to their social environment.

  • we don speak only 3 languages brother!it depend on the regions, for expl in the south most of the population speak either mandinka or Joola, in some nothern ereas , people speak puulaar , in the capital city , allmost everybody speaks wollof ,and in some other regions , the majority speak serer , etc., I wanna say 2 the brothers , PLZ don speak about the country if you have never left DK , or your region , so stop!!the only time u spend years out of ur town is when u hav got vissa

  • Thank you for your explanation of the use of Wolof and French in Senegal. Have you thought about making videos with more basic Wolof lessons. You guys are soooooo nice and good representatives of your country.

  • Great information about the way they speak Wolof, thank you very much, now I know why they use French words too. My first language is spanish, also I am half way of learning japanese. I feel like learning Wolof pretty soon too because it sounds really strong.

  • very interesting
