Hugh didn't really seem as if he had Aspergers. Surly, withdrawn, lacking in social skills and overly intellectual but he doesn't really come across as if he does.
Bollocks to all this "good slap" business. What Hugh's missing out on is proper interaction with his parents. Play, socialisation, genuine (emphasis on genuine) exchanges of affection and bonding. Rather than just pumping him full of meds and reinforcing a negative or defiant self-image by framing his behaviour vis-a-vis his battery of make-believe disorders.
@TheChan641 yeah man. thats typical of an asperger's patient though. That's also why in the earlier part when louis says "got up your nose" his mom has to make sure he understands because some aspergers patients also have a hard time understanding anything non literal.
@danielthomasslade wow, that's really stupid. with that logic a psyciatric hospital would just be doctors beating the shit out of mentally sick people. we already tried that, and it failed miserably.
@danielthomasslade my point is kids will push bounderies if you let them. a child should not be his own boss, thats why there are parents, but these parents have made huge mistakes somewhere & i think an occational slap is better than a life time of addiction, because making kids drug addicts,, well, surley thats more cruel?
very sad to see parents druggin their kids :( Hugh seem normal to me, maybe a little bit spoiled as parents not always know how to adress difficuilt behaviour, plus if he dosnt have any friends at school and parents are tend to favour doughter a bit more then his anger is easy to explain, its actually terryfiing to see such a young boy to be on drugs and parents do not take any other possibility on board :(:(:(
I worked with(behavior disorder)kidsfor 4 years at the YMCA and I have to say medications are without a doubt nessicary for some childern. Some kids just dont respond to "normal" situations and It is like a night and day diffrence when they are on their meds. Meds are often used as a blanket treatment and not enough is understood about the problems. But I feel when PROPER parenting is not enough medications can help resolve part of the problem. They are not the solution but are absolutely needed
I liked Louis' approach with the self-directed interview, something where it is really Hugh who is in charge of something. His entire world around him is exactly the opposite on a daily basis. His surroundings seem to fear giving up control. It's very telling that his mother cannot even imagine not medicating him. No wonder that she even drugs her dog. It wouldn't surprise me if that dog got a barking collar to increase control even further. How can someone learn to control himself like that?
the "they do better with their peers" is complete bullshit though. the amphetamines you get when you have adhd mostly make you get quieter and unconcerned. all in all less social. one of the reasons i stopped taking it
The reason Hugh took away his own Wii was simply to prevent his parents from doing it. Being deprived of the Wii did not matter to him very much, but for his parents to create a stressful confrontation would. By locking up the toy himself he avoided the resentment he would feel toward his parents if they took it away. Punishment messes up kids. The parents would do much better to "own" the Wii themselves, and lend it to Hugh to play with as a reward for good behavior.
This poor kid, Hugh, he is having everything inflicted on him by his parents. You can see in how they speak about him, like they're at war with him. If they persevere then he will at some stage become suicidal and drop out into drugs and so on. Its clear that when he wraps up his Wii for punishment, hes making a statement which is "You want to hurt me? you think im ao bad? look, i feel so bad i will hurt myself", and they completely misunderstand this to be some kind of evil challenge. Its sad.
All through the documentary Hugh reminded me of someone and now I know of who! The younger kid in The Butterfly Effect! Such a good film and he looks exactly like him; looks and personality-wise
When Hugh and Louis were playing the word game in the car and Hugh said, "D - Dungong", I immediately corrected him by saying, "it's Dugong, not Dungong." I think I am worse than Hugh. :(
I bet einstein, jim morrison, kurt cobain, picasso and other important creative people weren´t easy children either, OH SHIT THE KID IS SMART AND CREATIVE, DRUG THE FUCK OUT OF HIM!!
@mafiamitzy i think you're underestimating him. he's smart, but that's not what the drug inhibits. he would most likely kick the shit out of other kids, and in fury he might hurt them bad with a rock or scissor or something. and at worst kill himself. i don't think you appreciate the level of self hatred that goes on in his mind... just saying... i'm mildly bi-polar and did all that shit as a kid... not suicide of course, but you know. he's worse than me, so he would wreak havoc.
@TheLVB1827 In terms of being very abstract individuals who produced very original and unique works of art dedicated to ones free expression? Then of course.
@Andysbat for sure, i would have personally mentioned Igor Stravinsky. he was a friend of picasso's. ha, not trying to start a gigantic argument here, but seriously, if you are interested in original unique classical music, he's your guy.
Morison and Kobain are good i guess in terms of modern music; for me though its always been about Floyd!
I don't believe any of these children need to be medicated, like Theroux suggested people flock towards the easier method of treatment. Bad manners and poor attitude cannot be solved with medication, otherwise the pharmacies would be emptied on a daily basis. I do not believe that in the case of Hugh, parenting is not the problem. I could say perhaps he could use more discipline, however Hugh's personality and behaviour is also his own responsibility and so you cannot simply blame the parents.
Through the magic of television, we the audience only see a sampling of what is actually occuring within these homes. From my perspective, Hugh's parents are not bad parents - they are trying to parent the way they know how and to the best of their ability. Who are we to judge who is a bad parent or displays bad parenting skills? What you would consider wrong, would be just as normal to another. You have to consider that the attitude Hugh has is a result of himself.
@TheChan641 I was like that when I was younger as well. I read a ton because I was just generally antisocial, and I still am. Not crazy or whatever, just introverted. I don't think there's anything hugely wrong with Hugh

of course all my remarks concerning the children and parents are solely based upon the little that i have seen in this documentary!
i am aware of the fact that i haven't seen everything, nevertheless i'm under the imporession that american society is sicker than i have thought and that many parents get out of their way and don't act within the bounds of reason.
that's my 2 cents and i have borderline-pers.-disorder, aspergers, ocd, anxiety-disorder, adhd, multiple sclerosis and polytoxicomania
i already commented on part 3, but i have to say it again: ALL these shown parents are absolute clowns! they are to lazy to raise their childre properly and their behavior is out any bounds of reason!
there are situations when you have to show them authority, when even corporal punishment can be acceptable - not brutal beatings but a slap or spanking, all within bounds of reason! IMO all those kids don't need strong medication and i can tell, since i have many psychological diagnosis myself
i can totally relate to hugh wanting things to be his way, control and all. he's a very smart and understandable guy. the kid clearly has love for his family, and there needs to be a lot more understanding and appreciation. his smart young brain doesn't deserve the possible negative effects of medication.
Your own ego is getting in the way, you can't call this little guy a prick he is obviously very in conflict within himself because he has never had stable intelligent parents.
You can't blame him, you have to try and look past his acting and see the real kid.
Does Hugh ever say "thank you"? I mean seriously? I was the same as he was at his age (and well into adulthood; it's shit), and I was always, ALWAYS grateful for ANYTHING anyone ever did for me. His parents need to teach him manners and etiquette. Seriously.
The thing I am wondering about is how two of your children develop ADHD? How are the chances of that if only 6-8% of children at all have ADHD? You might want to think about finding answers to your childs behaviour in your parenting style...But thats only my point of view.
@shifta187 ADHD actually has a very strong genetic element, so if you have one child with ADHD, the chances are a lot higher than 6-8% of your other children having it as well.
@iSparkleToo Ah okay. Didnt know that. Still, I'm of the opinion that there are other ways than medication. Here in Germany exist special schools for special kids without medication.
@shifta187 I agree, there are behavioural managements that are also effective for managing ADHD. I believe most cases kids should be mainstreamed and not need to go to a special school.
@shifta187 Was für Schulen meinst du, Sonderschulen?
@carriemaizey I have AD/HD and I will say this: the medication I take is a godsend. When I'm not on my meds I cannot focus or think straight or sit still. It's aweful; meds help me function normally. And its not like a minor focus problem, I literally cannot focus on something no matter how hard I try. Don't say these disorders are fake, they're not.
@Okamifanj Medication is not always the answer. I suffer heavily with depression and the first suggestion I got was to take medication. I however do not believe this is the right way to go. With the right approach to cognitive training you can iron out the creases in your mind. The danger of these labels such as adhd and others is that if you are told you have it you can believe it so much that the symptoms manifest themselves. I call it the Peter Pan effect - If you believe it it will be true
@Okamifanj I feel for your delusion. Like fat people, you never saw some one suffering AD/HD come out of Auschwitz or Belsen.
Read Alan Carr's book 'Easy Way To Stop Smoking'. It deals with so called 'addiction' to everything and everything. IT doesn't EXIST. Only in your head.
PS Before the knee jerk responses on this forum. read the book first. I can tell if you haven't ... :D
@carriemaizey That's because the Nazi were prone to killing anyone with a mental disorder, just look at the way they treated PTSD sufferers. The disorders exist, but popping pills like they are smarties is no way to get better.
@EbsNhexz Ah yet another pointless 'it's-not-MY-fault' weak brained acronym. What the hell is PTSD??? And I was arguing AGAINST pill popping. DO keep up.
@carriemaizey PTSD= Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, popularly known as shell shock. Its no mere acronym.I know you were arguing against pill popping, and I agree with you. However it is also necessary to avoid going to the other extreme of pretending the conditions don't exist just because doctors like to over prescribe pills.
I'm happy to actually see constructive comments under a yt video. I was diagnosed with 'severe' ADHD when I was five and I recognize a lot of my brhaviour as a child, as well as the problems that these families are coping with.
I'm sure that raising kids with problems is a very hard job. Nontheless
Hugh is wonderful. Smart. Misunderstood. I can't believe some of the comments I've read...he's a child!? I find it hard to believe kids are born with these conditions. I believe these are all learned behaviours that they've developed in response to negative experiences they've encountered. It's not their fault. You know...something about all the parents in the documentary disturbed me. Can't quite put my finger on it. What's going on when two of your kids develop ADHD!? IWht
this was one of my first thoughts. "giving the kid a placebo medication" and everything will be fine. on the other hand, if you are at this point to drug your dog too, you have to think if something is going wrong with you. unbelievable.
Yesterday in my acting class we were playing a similar game about animals beginning with each letter of the alphabet, and I got D. Guess which animal I said. Hugh Kelly, if you're reading this, you're awesome.
I find it completely ridiculous that people watch and hour long documentary and assume its bad parenting... These children clearly showed abnormal behaviours over a long period of time, all the parents here seem loving and respectable people who are using medication on their kids in order for them to function as normal kids
@gloryboxlock But that's you. Hugh suffers from extreme swings from self-belief to self-loathing. You can't judge someone else by your experiences. I hope you have someone who understands your problems. It would be nice if you could try and understand someone else's. You should know better.
@0m12 That's a really harsh thing to say about a child. Hugh's swings from delusions of grandeur to extreme self-loathing are a classic symptom of bi-polar. I started watching this horrified by the thought of medicating and diagnosing young people so definitively, but it's clear Hugh has behavioural abnormalities, and I think his parents were well-adjusted, caring people. Hugh is a sweet kid who's suffering from massive swings in terms of his self-esteem. I wish him and his parents luck.
High functioning Autistic children have a problem with ego. I have one. He has outgrown it some by interacting more with his peers and finding out he is not all that. I am proud of him and love him no matter what.
hugh is a sad lonely kid who has been isolated becasue of his parent's poor parenting and melodrama. All he needs is a friend and someone who will listen to him. He has taken up this angry surly persona because that is how he has been labelled all his life, he knows no better. I feel really sorry for him.
@izzyrox13 I don't like it when people blame it all on the parents. That kid is an arrogant control freak. I am not one for labeling, I don't like it when people blame being rude or anything negative on labels. That kid is young, when he is older he will realize that he is just acting like a dick..
Hugh seems like he may be psychopathic/sociopathic. This doesn't mean he will grow up to be a serial killer or anything, it's great that he is getting help, but I think he has some serious issues.
the girl was having withdrawal, its an amphetamine blend, if you take that everyday for long periods of time you cant stop abruptly and expect no consequences
Having read the top comments on this sequence of videos I think that the people who wrote them have or do not live with children like this.
It's not as easy as saying "the parents just need to discipline the kids" or "the kids are just attention seekers", in fact it is such a complex issue that cannot even be fully understood even by the people it affects.
Haha in the interview he sounds like accepting a oscar! :D Louis Theroux is a incredibly smart individual ... amazing how he interacts with that kid ...
I can't stop seeing Hugh's mom and my own mom's similarities. They're both so quick to diagnose their kid with serious mental disorder just for an excuse to push pills so it's easier on them and maybe relieve a little bit of the guilt they feel about being a "bad parent." This is only reconfirming Hugh's insecurities that he isn't normal. This is really, really, sad. I hope his parents get some sense before it's too late for the kid and he is "socially ruined" like I was.
When you're told from a young age that you are different, you start to believe it and accept it (maybe even embrace it, in Hugh's case.) You start looking for acceptance in other ways and it turns you into a know-it-all/social retard. All he wants is to be accepted from his parents and not feel like a burden on them but clearly they're too self-absorbed to see that. Medication only aggravates this behavior, especially the amount that he is taking! He must feel like a freakin' zombie!
For some reason I really really relate with Hugh. I see a lot of parallels between his attitude and my own. I don't think I'm quite as bad as him with the "I'm smart and I like being special" charade but it's definitely there. I think most of it is caused from his parents attitude toward him. They treat him as if he is some sort of chemically imbalanced freak and he acts accordingly. He acts out because of the pretty obvious tension him and his mother have.
All these comments about what people think is wrong with these kids & what they'd do to fix them is just the same as what the doctors & parents are doing except without the parental bonds & medical degrees.
@TheNarcMan yes. but this is an issue of social consensus about 'normal' behaviour. incompetent parents and the medical industry can not be afforded dominance on this issue.
You can see the distrust for the world in Hugh's eyes. He may come off demonic and devious, but he's a child. Hugh's actions are something called A PHASE. He'll be fine in the long run. He is currently nothing more than a mere guinea pig for children's medical research.
When mother of hugh say i love that and Louis look at her like WTF !
I saw other documentary in 60 minutes of a family said their soon is a genius and has autism disorder and some point of the documentary the kid start playing guitar hero with the guitar on his back to show the skills he had lol and when the interviewer asked him "do you want to an astronaut "? and the kid said not a "normal astronaut but the chief of the astronauts" !

that's my 2 cents and i have borderline-pers.-disorder, aspergers, ocd, anxiety-disorder, adhd, multiple sclerosis and polytoxicomania
m0rbusPolytox 1 month ago
i already commented on part 3, but i have to say it again: ALL these shown parents are absolute clowns! they are to lazy to raise their childre properly and their behavior is out any bounds of reason!
there are situations when you have to show them authority, when even corporal punishment can be acceptable - not brutal beatings but a slap or spanking, all within bounds of reason! IMO all those kids don't need strong medication and i can tell, since i have many psychological diagnosis myself
m0rbusPolytox 1 month ago
i can totally relate to hugh wanting things to be his way, control and all. he's a very smart and understandable guy. the kid clearly has love for his family, and there needs to be a lot more understanding and appreciation. his smart young brain doesn't deserve the possible negative effects of medication.

@Triipticz

You might want to think about finding answers to your childs behaviour in your parenting style...But thats only my point of view.
shifta187 3 months ago
@shifta187 ADHD actually has a very strong genetic element, so if you have one child with ADHD, the chances are a lot higher than 6-8% of your other children having it as well.
iSparkleToo 3 months ago
@iSparkleToo Ah okay. Didnt know that. Still, I'm of the opinion that there are other ways than medication. Here in Germany exist special schools for special kids without medication.
shifta187 3 months ago 2
@shifta187 I agree, there are behavioural managements that are also effective for managing ADHD. I believe most cases kids should be mainstreamed and not need to go to a special school.

@shifta187 Was für Schulen meinst du, Sonderschulen?
Kroellmaster 3 months ago
@shifta187 ADHD, OCD, ME - All total bollocks dreamed up by 'professionals' and Big Pharma for their many and various very lucrative 'treatments'.
I too like Louis. He always answers all and any tweets. His style is cynical bordering on sarcasm but with heart.
carriemaizey 3 months ago
@carriemaizey I have AD/HD and I will say this: the medication I take is a godsend. When I'm not on my meds I cannot focus or think straight or sit still. It's aweful; meds help me function normally. And its not like a minor focus problem, I literally cannot focus on something no matter how hard I try. Don't say these disorders are fake, they're not.
Okamifanj 3 months ago
@Okamifanj Medication is not always the answer. I suffer heavily with depression and the first suggestion I got was to take medication. I however do not believe this is the right way to go. With the right approach to cognitive training you can iron out the creases in your mind. The danger of these labels such as adhd and others is that if you are told you have it you can believe it so much that the symptoms manifest themselves. I call it the Peter Pan effect - If you believe it it will be true
PnutButter1986 3 months ago
@Okamifanj I feel for your delusion. Like fat people, you never saw some one suffering AD/HD come out of Auschwitz or Belsen.
Read Alan Carr's book 'Easy Way To Stop Smoking'. It deals with so called 'addiction' to everything and everything. IT doesn't EXIST. Only in your head.
PS Before the knee jerk responses on this forum. read the book first. I can tell if you haven't ... :D
carriemaizey 3 months ago
@carriemaizey That's because the Nazi were prone to killing anyone with a mental disorder, just look at the way they treated PTSD sufferers. The disorders exist, but popping pills like they are smarties is no way to get better.
EbsNhexz 2 months ago
@EbsNhexz Ah yet another pointless 'it's-not-MY-fault' weak brained acronym. What the hell is PTSD??? And I was arguing AGAINST pill popping. DO keep up.
carriemaizey 2 months ago
@carriemaizey PTSD= Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, popularly known as shell shock. Its no mere acronym.I know you were arguing against pill popping, and I agree with you. However it is also necessary to avoid going to the other extreme of pretending the conditions don't exist just because doctors like to over prescribe pills.

@gloryboxlock But that's you. Hugh suffers from extreme swings from self-belief to self-loathing. You can't judge someone else by your experiences. I hope you have someone who understands your problems. It would be nice if you could try and understand someone else's. You should know better.
MoLovatt 4 months ago
...do you think that maybe it's not too late for an abortion with Hugh? Just this once.
0m12 4 months ago

CynicalBlondeChick 5 months ago 3
When you're told from a young age that you are different, you start to believe it and accept it (maybe even embrace it, in Hugh's case.) You start looking for acceptance in other ways and it turns you into a know-it-all/social retard. All he wants is to be accepted from his parents and not feel like a burden on them but clearly they're too self-absorbed to see that. Medication only aggravates this behavior, especially the amount that he is taking! He must feel like a freakin' zombie!
CynicalBlondeChick 5 months ago 4

TheNarcMan 5 months ago
@TheNarcMan yes. but this is an issue of social consensus about 'normal' behaviour. incompetent parents and the medical industry can not be afforded dominance on this issue.

I would change Hugh's medication for sugar pills (maybe not sugar :s) or something without him knowing just to see how he acted.
LogicalStatements1 5 months ago
You can see the distrust for the world in Hugh's eyes. He may come off demonic and devious, but he's a child. Hugh's actions are something called A PHASE. He'll be fine in the long run. He is currently nothing more than a mere guinea pig for children's medical research.
