This has great memories for me. I started my apprentiship in Radio and TV in 1970. Test card F would would always greet you with a smile on entering the workshop.
She had an enigmatic smile, not unlike the Mona Lisa. I think that's what attracted a lot of people. Spectulating on exactly what it was she was thinking at the time this historic photo was taken. She, most likely, was a bit fed up/tired of having to sit there whilst the lighting, (and everything else involved with taking a, 'proper', photograph), was sorted out. I wonder how many shots were taken, or whether this was the only one? Bubbles has lasted well.
I was born in 1968, and I remember her so well, as I used to look at her picture on the testcard when I was about 7 or 8, and I found her madly attractive! Feels a bit strange, as I'm 42 now, and still think she's beautiful!
I was at school with Carole. Nice girl. Often wondered what she'd ended up doing. We'd had a couple of reunions over the years, but she never featured.
I must be a little older than you becasue I remember this from the 70's (as well as the 80's).
Carole Hersee had a bit of an influnence on sexuality issues (not that I ever had any) - because I used to kiss her image on the monochrome screen when no one was looking!
Quite apart ffom that, I had a crush on most of my lady teachers (the pretty ones!) - not that there were too many pretty ones around (I live in Wales!).
ya been collecting the life on mars dvd's? didn't think much of the second one.. I almost bought the box set of em.. glad I didn't .. £8 or so .. news of the world.. even though I can't stand the paper.. it's worth it for that n the tv guide
ah well borg.. some ya win .. some ya lose. I was tempted to buy it ages ago, but they wanted way too much for it. besides there's extra's on the box dvd also?
I worked in a IBA studio. I still have access to a sound mixer desk. Simply place the mixer console onto the tuning signal and create a digital file onto a floppy disk - Robert is one's Uncle. I found a few downloadable ones on the Net too.
Hey, thanks for posting your video. Good interview. I did have a question about Carole, though.
Would she still accept fan mail? I'd love to get an autographed Test Card F photo (if she wouldn't mind signing one, that is). I love Test Cards and other test patterns.
Is there an address where I can write to her? Or do I write to the BBC? (I live in the USA).
viz comic did their own, with roger mellie ;-)

@Gu1tar1st - I used to wait until the lounge was deserted and then proceed to kiss her monochrome image. My Dad caught me once and took the p!*ss...
When we got a colour TV - I wrote to the BBC - asking for her hand in marriage.
I never got a reply,
If you see this Carole... I too think you are rather splendid!

My gran used to live in the same street as her father George Hersee. When we visited her, sometimes we would see George out and about.
He always had a hangdog expression on his face, but he was such a lovely man.
R.I.P. George.

... and there's me thinking that this was highly apropriate, considering that test cards were, themselves, inanimate displays.
That was the thinking - perhaps my artistic licence is no longer valid.
Apologies if I have managed to disapoint?

It was only meant for the BBC but I wonder if they expected it to be used all over the world at the time?
