  • It's funny how you start out by saying "This is for artists" then go on to talk about one form of art being rubbish, when you should already know art is taste. It made me laugh because in my opinion, the stuff used for the opening scenes were rubbish.

  • Macross, Gunbuster & Gall Force Oh Yeah!!!

  • The First song with Ozzy was bad-ass, but the second sucked.

    Overall, cool video!

  • I love it. Who could forget the first Project A-Ko movie? It was the first anime to parody mecha, space action and alien invasions, do damn-good job at it and still take itself seriously at the right moments. Gall Force was pretty cool too even if I've only seen the first movie.

  • very very cool

  • consider me referred animationally speaking

  • Bravo!!!

  • Great compilation!

  • glad to see some babylon 5 on here, they were way ahead of their time

  • Nicely done. And good use of the Project A-ko footage.

  • Captain Tyler has some good fleet scenes.

  • This music is the most horrible thing I've ever had the misfortune to hear in my life! 2 stars!

  • No legend of the galatic heroes? I am disapoint

  • I haven't seen it yet! It's all been downloaded and collected on the PC downstairs but I have V Gundam and all of Slam Dunk to go through first...!

I hear good things though. Nothing but good things.

  • @bajs2142 yep, legend of the galactic heroes has been the largest fleet action i've ever seen in visual media. not sure if there is anything else bigger. supposedly there are tens of thousands of ships in each fleet. most of the frames are close ups or only show the exhuast of each ship as dots from far away, though.

  • What about the climax of Serenity? That was bad ass.

  • Can't believe you forgot glass fleet!

  • cool video

  • what show is the massive animated blue ship on the start of ur vid off? if there is spaceships that big on tv i would like to watch it!

  • The 1986 movie Project A-Ko.

    A visual masterpiece!

  • ohh!! this is so cool thanks!! i hope the ryo-o is in here!! :3

  • wats teh show called around 1:55?

iv seen taht like a long time ago

  • looks like a ship from blue gender but really where i can find there episodes

  • ROBOTECH "harmony gold usa version" and Macross and Macross Plus Japan original versions. LOVE THEM!

    Zentradi Rock!

  • I miss the mega fleet battles of 80's and 90's anime. Those were the days space themed shows.

  • you know whas funny, the battle of endor actually looks more realistic than the battle of coruscant in ROTS

  • That's the difference with real models and CG.

The original trilogy used real models, and thus the light, motion etc looked "right" to the eye. CG, no matter how "good" (I hate it, personally) cannot fool the brain, and looks out of place.

Lucas, of course, loves CG now and always says that if he made the original films now they'd be totally CG. The guy has lost the plot entirely.

  • Babylon 5 looks pretty CG to me...

  • Shhh! You'll ruin my argument! Haha.

I can live with Bab 5 though, because it was CG from the start, and was in a time when CG was quite new and novel to me.

  • Well I feel sorry for you my friend. CG today is excellent. Ex: Transformers. What you take as real does not take into account scale. When the Star Destroyer is eclipsed by the Eclipse, its shadow is blurry and lacking difussion. CG today is superb when well executed.

  • Tranformers was the perfect example of why I hate CG.

You just couldn't see what the hell was going on. With models you have to know what you're doing. With CG, any monkey can throw a bunch of crap together and you end up with the confusing space battles of the new Star Wars films, where a million comedy droids are flying around confusing the eye, and there's no focal point.

  • You know what, you have a point. Today more intricate and dynamic (often disorientating) scenes can be achieved. Guess it isn't for everyone.

  • i know what you mean. on the start of episode III i had to watch the battle about 6 times to get what was happening! plus to prove i could name every single ship there...

  • Man, this is starship porn!!

  • The music is disturbing, Thats why im not watching it.

  • Good and useful work.

  • has anyone seen how detailed the ships are on the new Macross Frontier anime?

  • Nah... lazy CG doesn't count. Hand-crafted work has always been the way. Like how much better the originl Star Wars ships look compared to the terrible new trilogy's messy 3D-fests.

  • thanks for this =] great insperation for some concept art, never really looked into anime ships before

  • Glad you liked it! Of course, anime ships are all crappy 3D now, but in the 80s-90s they were meticulously drawn, as you can see.

  • Lucas and the anime are both using sci-fi to talk about World War II. If the anime feels a bit painful (city nuked at 1:35, pretty girls dying at 4:00), the pain is real; it comes from being on the losing end of battles like Midway, Leyte Gulf, and Ten-go, and the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

  • man, that ship at the beginning (NOT THE EXECUTOR) is freakin' HUGE!!! even Sajuuk is smaller than that

  • The problem with digital media could be summed up mostly in how none of it can properly render light as well as the real, physically-existent deal can. This would go for old-fashioned cel-based animation as well, there's that amount of painting knowledge animators had to know as well as opposed to slapping on digital ink and paint and letting that run itself.

  • Also, where's Legend of the Galactic Heroes? :(

Bad-ass anime series; never dubbed in the US. Fansubs out there though. 80s anime as well.

Some of the battle scenes remind me of Galaxy Rangers (I think; what's what people said the ogame vid featuring that 80s style anime battle had)

  • "Unlike the poorly-scrawled, detail-less digital rubbish they pass off as anime these days) holds its own in terms of sheer scale and ridiculously detailed art (oh, and some ridiculously nice animation, too). You certainly won't be seeing anything this nice in modern anime, and that's for sure."

Seen Gundam Seed/Seed Destiny? Or Heroic Age? Arguably Crest/Banner of the Stars as well I heard

  • Wait, for herioc Age, didnt they reuse frames?

  • hell yeh some of the classic animes are great for space battles but these days all we have is Gundam... and that digital stuff works well for that....

  • Cool!Cool!

What is the HUGE ship at the very beginning?

  • The largest ship in anime (almost) - from Project A-Ko. I suggest you watch it... it's one of the greatest movies I've ever seen!

  • Great video! Although I think the largest ship in anime, to my knowledge, would actually be the Buster Machine #3/Black Hole Bomb (If you could even call it a ship). If were talking combat vessels though, the Eltreum is definately larger than that ship at least, boasting a total length of 70 kilometers. Huge ship is HUGE! Its epic to even think about how big these ships are and if they could ever actually be built by human hands in the future.

  • Given enough time and resources, we can build anything. Im still waiting for a continent sized space vessel to be built.

  • well, theres the death star...

  • Absolutely fantastic, way to go, Paul Johnson!

  • Cheers! Most kind of you.

  • i have no clue really on anime type art, but i think cg space battles and such now are probably better than the past. Old CG wasnt so hot cause computers were poorer quality, they did CG cause it was just easier to mass produce effects/scenes. Building hand models is infintely more detailed, but takes 100-1000 times longer

  • Glad you had some B5 in there mate :D!!!!!!

  • What anime show is that first huge ship from? I haven't been able to track it down.

  • It's an incredible movie called Project A-Ko. It has the honour of having the most ridiculously detailed spaceship art maybe in anime history.

    Well, after the Macross movie.

  • Hehe. Yeah, Macross is pretty detailed. Thanks for the info.

  • My jekyll doesn't hide rocks.

  • Not particular fond of the music.. but very nice video. And you're right! Anime nowadays, with the usage of computers to assistance really just lacks the incredible detail they had with cel animation.

Hell sure, you get some nice visual on stuff like Gunbuster 2 or Apple Seed. But just doesn't feel as stylish or ... animated? as back in the days when they had to draw each cell by hand

  • I honestly believe that they all lost the ability to draw the second they switched from hand drawn to digital. Variable line widths are gone, replaced with uniform "line tool" sterile crap. Colour is gone, because they simply use Photoshop and turn the brightness tool down, rather than mixing a shade colour with different paints. Adding black to a colour isn't the way to shade.

  • Even recent Gainax stuff like Gunbuster 2 and FLCL has hideous character designs and no shading. Whereas Gunbuster (the proper one) is one of the greatest looking things ever made.

  • i guess you would be willing to pay extra money for those dvds to cover the high production costs of these things if they were being done by hand, and deal with scenes being re-used to save time on animation.

people SERIOUSLY need to stop thinking that stuff done with computers is poorer quality than before. there are still humans doing these things, computers just make it far easier to do what they want.

  • It's a nice thought, but if that's the case then how come no modern anime artwork is anywhere near the detail quality you see in this video?

Lazy digital crap. That's new anime.

  • alphamone, take a look at ships from classic movies like Alien, and compare it to CG, no where can you find a CG ship with that much detail, and none look as real. Computers, while allowing greater freedom in certain types of images they can create, are indeed poorer quality than earlier artforms.

  • You're completely right.

And the classic Star Wars films prove it. The new ones were just messy and hard-to-follow CG space battles. The model effects looked real because they were real.

CG grates on the eye and just looks fake. Incredibly fake.

  • seen the opening of Episode III? Anyway, the problems aren't the CG's fault; it's George Lucas'a fault for not putting more focus on the Space Battle over Coruscant and only focusing on the Jedi heading there.

  • nice just wat i like..!!

  • maybe you could help me find an anime space fleet type thing.. it was only an OVA, i forget the name, but they had 'mechs' called tracers, stolen form an alien race that attacked earth, and the humans are mounting an offensive. the main charachter is a girl, shes young and a tracer pilot, and tries to keep in contact with her friend, on earth, but the farther she goes, the longer it takes, and they lose touch...

  • That was "Hoshi no Koe" or "Voices of a Distant Star." It was a bit too "new" for my liking, but admittedly very very good. And all made by one guy, pretty much!

  • awesome, thanks man. me and my brother have been looking for it for a while.

  • nicely done, I like the music ^_^
