If you really want to learn about the Vietnam War through good film...Watch The Most Dangerous Man in American, or Fog of War: 11 Lessons From The Life of Robert S. McNamara
I dont get how apocalypse now is rated the best Vietnam movie, it's not so much about the war as it about Brando loosing his mind, surely platoon or full metal jacket are better because they more directly about the war?
Shit war movies kill, Saving Private Ryan, Full Metal Jacket, The Deer Hunter, Platoon, and now Born on the fourth of july, I have yet to see this War Film but if Platoon by the Great Oliver stone proves anything is that Brave Film Genuis can sure create a gem of a Film,

@davidallenroth i think you have the message all wrong...Oliver Stone's message was how wrong the Vietnam war was in the first place. How young boys like Ron Kovic were set out on serving their country were decieved and lied to, as was the general public. It's not an anti-military movie, it's an anti-war movie.

Best Male Acting Performances of the 1980's: 1. Robert De Niro, Raging Bull (1980) 2. Daniel Day-Lewis, My Left Foot (1989) 3. Dustin Hoffman, Rain Man (1988) 4. Ben Kingsley, Gandhi (1982) 5. Al Pacino, Scarface (1983) 6. John Hurt, The Elephant Man (1980) 7. Dennis Hopper, Blue Velvet (1986) 8. Denzel Washington, Glory (1989) 9. Tom Cruise, Born on the Fourth of July (1989) 10. Robert Downey Jr., Less Than Zero (1987)
@kashaud17 Not quite. I mean, Daniel Day-Lewis was just breathtaking in My Left Foot. His work in My Left Foot is not only a performance, but is an experience. I will also say that Tom Cruise completely and utterly outdid himself in Born on the Fourth of July. He did win the Golden Globe, and a lot of people thought he was gonna win. If anything, he was definitely the second choice to win the Oscar.

Is there the equivalent to an Oliver Stone or a Michael Moore anywhere else in the world? Are there any Russian films about their invasion of Afghanistan? Are there any British expose biopics about Margaret Thatcher?
Personally, I was disappointed with this film. I went into this film hoping that it would answer the question of why the Vietnam War was unjust. It did for a while, but then the film went off-track, spending too much time focusing on Kovic's sexual frustration in Mexico and his guilt over accidentaly killing Wilson. Those emotions had nothing to do with his transformation into an anti-war activist, because they had nothing to do with the war.
That being said, the loss of lives is sad and regrettable - just as the attitudes of some of the soldiers and their officers. This war was mis-managed from the start, too many restrictions were put on the leaders and with the media covering every inch the war nearly hopeless. However, the war was won after the Tet offensive, the NVA was decimated but the American media portrayed it as such an American defeat the military was forced to once again alter its strategy.
The world would be much different had the US not fought in Vietnam, the North Vietnamese would have easily overrun the South killing hundreds of thousands of innocents. In the early 60s it would have been a tremendous victory for all Communists - With all of Vietnam Communist, China and the USSR North Korea would have invaded their neighbors to the South as well raising the Cold War to levels that would have been difficult to return from.
those many death were not only sad but also in vein. imagine a world in which the US had not gone to wage war in vietnam.... wonder whether it would be any different to ours now except there being no vietnam trauma. probably it would have changed nothing of much significance. and yet so many had to die because some people were blinded by their fear and hatred. well done, gentlemen. next time bring the fight to people who asked for it.
@Shatterhemd politics. And i dont believe they died in vein. thats a very cruel thing to say and i advise you not to say it to any veteran in real life. You fight for the man along side you no matter what situation your in. Its called Duty. You die for you best friend an fellow soldier and the country. The Country that stabs you in the back makes you question your home. I have respect for any soldier who has the balls to fight for something. And not all soldiers are good some are cruel.
@invanz0 I am sorry, I did not want to offend. I understand how any (veteran) soldier deserves respect for the hardship he/she underwent in times of war. However, the motivation for a war cannot just be put aside in that judgement. Soldiers need to have a moral conscience. Anyone who makes themselves willingly and with other options available part of the opression of a people that has the right for their freedom, including killing those people should expect little respect for what they've done.
Who did the worst "spitting"? those in power who spat on the truth, spat on the law, and spat on the worth of the life of soldiers by sending them to a war, to kill millions of Asians and to die by the tens of thousands. They are the real traitors, to send so many to their early deaths. They were the worst "spitters". Those who tried to stop this mass-murdering monstrosity were patriots.war mongers sent GIs to die..what happened when war was lost? Nothing bad but Coca-cola in Vietnam
agreed. much more than the soldiers that killed the political forces behind it need(ed) to take responsibility and also to provide support to the soldiers they send to Vietnam in their names. All the same, soldiers are not mindless machines. If my boss told me to physically abuse personnel of a competitor I would not do it either. Politicians always used soldiers for their means but does not mean that each soldier needs to think for themselves and their conscience, too.
@econdemocracy Can you imagine what the world would be today if America never joined? Do you even know why we went to war? It was mainly to stop the spread of Communism. South Vietnam would have lost much earlier and probably taken over by Commnuism, including South Korea. Harry Truman's prediction of the spread of Communism would've came true. And how soon would it have reached the Philipines? Japan? Any closer to the U.S.? It may not have been "right" but something would happen sooner or later
You know whats really ironic: All those hippies that spit on the troops coming home from 'nam are the same people who are cheering the ones during desert storm some years later.
It's a great movie. I got so mad when they spat on him and called him a traitor, he sacrificed everything and it was all a lie. And those spoiled fuckers didn't do shit!
full metal jacket is also one of the greatest films about the war

@wtbriann In other words, Vietnam was a failed U.S. campaign, but if America didn't join, something big would've happened either then or later.

You know whats really ironic: All those hippies that spit on the troops coming home from 'nam are the same people who are cheering the ones during desert storm some years later.
