hi and thanks for bothering to post this video, it is nice of you and i need instructions. however, i cannot stand the music, so couldnt finish the video. thanks anyway!
thanks for the video.. my tips are: use previously boiled water ONLY.. also, you didnt say anything about repeating the procedure on the other nostril. Normally half a pot per nostril is sufficient. In addition to that, drying the nose must be done by VERY GENTLY blowing air out in lots of short puffs... otherwise hard blowing will force water into your Eustachian tubes and may lead to ear infections as well as further complicate any issue you are having with your sinus.
Okay, please.... You drink tap water, but it will "damage" or "kill" you to run it through your nose?! Yeah, and chlorine at the levels used in tap water is so hazardous... I've used tap water for years, with 1/4 t. salt, with no problems. Just don't use untreated well water!
I used to be scared to use those things but then my sister and mother talked me into it and it was awesome and even feels kinda good. It's cut my allergy issues in half :)
I've been getting tonsil stones my whole life. I'm going to get a neti pot and a water pick tomorrow. Hopefully these will get rid of these damn things!
Is it a great idea to put chlorinated water through your nasal cavities? I use distilled water. Also, I've read that any type of non-iodized salt. . .
@dabearded1: and if the user turns down the volume, they can't hear the verbal instructions in the video, DUH! I guess if you leave comments like yours, you didn't put any thought into what the OP was talking about.
I finally tried the neti pot because of having a horrible sinus headache with my cold. My husband uses one all the time. He says to use plain non-iodized salt. At first the water was going down my throat. I found out later that you're supposed to keep your mouth open and that won't happen.
1/4 tsp. unbleached sea salt will do. Switching back and forth from one nostril to the other with one small neti pot is enough. No need to keep refilling the pot. However, at the end of the process 'gently' blow nose into the sink. Then, because there may be water still inside cavities, stand away and bend over as though you were looking at your shoes, and let any extra water begin to run back out your nose, Tilt your head back up and let it drain. Repeat a few times.
Get rid of the music if you want people to actually finish watching your videos. Interesting demonstration here, but the music is way too distracting.
I thought this was fine and clear. I used this video to use a neti pot (well i used a tea pot since i couldn't wait to try it and that worked fine too). Thank you for taking the trouble to post it. I use salt in my throat at night if I am starting to feel like I'm catching a cold and the saline neti to help keep my nasal passages dry. Nothing worse then that cold that gets worse and worse until you cannot breathe
@pmcginn497 I did it the first time with a normal tea pot. It works. Using one really does allow you to breathe fully and not feel pressure in your face either. I got a neti pot from the store and you can buy them on line.
@dekling Use 3% solution of Hydrogen Peroxide from your drugstore aisle. They suggest you dilute it a bit. If you buy a little syringe to squirt the solution into your ear, holding your head so your ear is facing the ceiling. You will hear like a boiling sound in your ear, just let it bubble away, it takes a few minutes until it slows and almost stops. Be happy,. it is cleaning out the wax. You can use it every few weeks. I never have to use q tips any more.
@dekling it goes into your ears but dont come out them,it goes up the nose all around the sinuses and into the ears and goes back into the nose and out the nostril that is open
Okay fat guy, than you for the vid but the music in the background did not go well with the vid...... i kept looking for a pop up that might have been playing the music. Just fyi...but thanks for the vid!
It's a shame the annoying singing voice with that horrible song was there because I really wanted to see this video, but I couldn't hear what he was saying because of that stupid music. I stopped watching a decided to post this comment bitching about it instead. Seriously, no music in future videos.
I should do this, cause I have constant allergic rhinitis or something like that. But I can't - when I try to wash my nose with salt it really hurts/burns alot =(
Ok first of all you don't use cornstarch!! Secondly you don't "suck in". That's just crazy! You use saline and seasalt and then you pour it slowly through one nostril while tipping your head to the side and slightly forward. It does work to clear you out. I use one when I have allergy attacks and such.
haha, i would never have the confidence to do that, but thank you soo much!!! I really appreciate knowing how it's done! The instructions on the box are kinda crap.
I wanted a demo and this is a good demo but you have to edit the music out of this video. It was extremely annoying and totally unecessary for a demo video!!!!!
Yeah it cleans nicely. Doesn't hurt at all. You have to make sure you keep your mouth open and breath through it or you might get some nasty snot taste in the back of your throat.
What a bunch of whiners! I heard him perfectly, the music didn't even register until the end that it had been playing the whole time. You didn't want to listen and you didn't care to listen, so you found something to complain about and went with it.
No, just make sure your head is leaning over the sink, so that the water will pour forward, not back into your throat. In fact, breathing through your mouth is a good idea the whole time. Remember to lean over from the waist and tilt your head.
i thought he did a good job. he explained it well and did a good demo unlike a lot of how to videos where they leave a lot out. go ahead and try a how to video for yourself, see how you do.
It really doesn't much matter if one can hear the commentary, as it was utter rubbish.
bassplayer71 claimed that this salt water wash-out cleaned dirt from his sinus passages, whilst the most this can do is to flush one's naso-pharynx; as far as cleaning one's sinus passages goes, one might as well stick it up one's ass.
Im going to try and get my hands on one of these Netti Pots, I have had this REALLY annoying sinus stuffiness (I think its Polyps...maybe) And having one nostril continually blocked is terrible, it gives me panic attacks. SO Im going to try the netti Pot!
I have panic attacks when my nose is plugged too! I get panicky because I can't breathe. It's awful. I just bought a neti-pot tonight so hopefully I'll have good results with it.
By the way, that's not a purpose-made Neti Pot - it's a ceramic invalid feeder (probably antique or old). Would work just as well, but if you're looking for a neti pot in a shop, this isn't what they look like!
I don't think anyone recommends that one use water from the faucet. It contains fluoride & chlorine if you have city water. I would try to use the purist water I could.
I love this and it can be bought at Walmart. I buy the salt packs there also. I was told to us distilled water by they are saying to get the water from the faucet.
I have sleep apnea and it is very important that my breathing be ok of the machine/mask doesn't work correctly.
I have a sinus infection so I just bought one of these things. I had never seen it done and I didnt read the instructions, I just opened it up, mixed it up, got in the shower, tilted my head back, and poured it in each nostril repeatedly. Afterwards, my nose was completely clear. A couple hours later, I decided to have another go at it because my nose was getting clogged again but this time I read the instructions. I tilted my head to the side. Still clogged up. Tilt your head back!
Yes this ancient exercise works wonders...there is also a 2nd part and that is once uv finished doing both nostril fill the pot up again and repeat again but this time as the water flows into the other nostril gently inhale sniff backwards to bubble the water in and spit it out of ur mouth this is an even more powerful exercise than the usual Jal Neti
any health food store or even pharmacy, but its a 1/4 tesspoon salt (not 1/2 teaspoon), and dont use table salt or sea salt(they irritate) get non iodized salt(or the health food store will have special neti pot salt)
using to little salt burns like crazy too. Its pretty simple but no room for shortcuts.
Its been a lifesaver for me after having sinus surgery that went wrong . very wrong. The DR cut my artery in my sunus's. It was a life changing event but the neti pot brought much relief and still does.
No I have not sued the DR although the I was very close to and called a few lawyers. They always judge by how disabaled you are and this cause me more mental trauma than anything. I have some physical effects since it took 4 surgeries to repair damages but I recovered for the most part after 6 months. I would be lucky to get 20,000 after a lawyer takes his cut and 2-3 years of anxiety over a pending case
I use the neti pot every night and I really like the results. The only thing I'm wondering is, is there a way to get rid of the excess water right away? I've noticed that of and on for about and hour after using it water continuously drips from my nose. Even if I gently blow it out it starts dripping again in about 2 seconds. Also if I shake my head from side to side I can hear it sloshing around. Any suggestions? The irrigation does help but the constant drip afterward is pretty annoying.
I'm suffering from a terrible cold for a few days now (living in Holland, spring is always terrible here) and I was feeling misarable until a few minutes ago! I just watched your video and gave it a try using a bottle with a really small drinking cap. It's not a miracle cure, but I feel a whole lot better and my head feels much clearer! Thank you so much!!
I had a TERRIBLE cold last week. My friend suggested doing this, so I bought one. Your video was awesome in demonstration and explaining everything! This thing stopped my nasty cold dead in its tracks after using it 3-4 times the first day and 2 times the next, then once per day after. Clears everything out. Amazing! I cannot thank you enough. Bless you!!!!!
That was very informal! My vocal teacher recommended it to me because I have such horrible allergies in the Spring, especially just moving to Southern California from San Francisco. Definately gonna try it sometime soon.
If you want to save money just use a water bottle that has the drinking nozzle on them. You know the kind that you can close and reopen they are about a dollar or so at the convenience stores then buy some non-Iodized about 2 bucks then do the same thing only put the nozzle of the drinking bottel in or on your nostral this works so well! and it's on;y $3 where as a neti pot is almost $20
This thing traumatized me, I used it for a while, and one time I used it I accidently breathed through my nose, got into my ear and was very painful. It helps, but I probably can't use it again, freaked me out to the core.
Thanks! My doctor recommended this treatment since I have chronic sinus infections, and I had no idea how to use the neti pot. FYI, these pots are also available in plastic - supposedly more hygenic, but who knows?!? Thanks for caring enough to share! Peace.
The video itself is very informative, thank you very much! Although I have to agree with the previous comment about the music..I wanted to hear what was being said, but was distracted trying to NOT listen to the music.
So don't watch it. This is helping people. It my mind it is better for a person to let personal dignity be held aside for the sake of helping others and for the sake of compassion. I googled to find this exact type of video. As a person with chronic sinus problems, this helped me find relief. And I am SO grateful. If he were a doctor demonstrating this to a patient would you call that undignified?
Actually contrary to what "beetlebalm" posted regarding the tap water being bad for your sinuses in this situation - the salt which is added into the water is what kills the bacteria which is in the water and in your nose. Just as in the salt that is in sea water - when you get cut/injured near the sea, dowsing your scrape/cut with the sea water will initially kill the bacteria in the wound.
Please avoid using tap water. It's loaded with bacteria. Not so much a problem when one drinks tap water because our immune system takes care of the problems through the digestive process. But when you introduce that bacteria directly into your sinuses, you're asking for some pretty nasty sinus infections. Use sterilized water.
Tap water is OK if you're on "city water." However, it may be an issue if you have well water - and it has not been tested to see what kind of nasties are lurking in it.
A more effective method is to use a rubber bulbed baby snot sucker from the pharmacy. Mix a saline solution and add a pinch of Cow brand baking soda to take the sting out of the salt. Suck the solution into the bulb, expel the air and completely fill the bulb. Plug one nostril, squirt the solution in the other nostril while inhaling lightly. You have achieved a perfect balance when some of the solution goes down your throat. This irrigates more of the sinus cavity than does the neti pot .
OMG why are you using tap water !

@vedlig Normally that happens if you have either too much or too lilttle salt your water.

Try to use 9g of salt in 1 liter of water. If that burns try a buffered 2:1 salt solution (2 parts salt, 1 part natron - about 9g to a liter).

ONLY1BLAZE 2 years ago
Then use a water filter for the faucet :)

i take mucinex otc tabs - a pill by mouth when i have congestion -(generic is guaifenesin) to thin secretions too so the sinuses drain well-
barn524 2 years ago
I love this and it can be bought at Walmart. I buy the salt packs there also. I was told to us distilled water by they are saying to get the water from the faucet.
I have sleep apnea and it is very important that my breathing be ok of the machine/mask doesn't work correctly.
I use it 2 times a day.

GBoots9 2 years ago
Oh, so that's why it comes with instructions. To ignore them! Thanks.
shadeylane 2 years ago
Yes this ancient exercise works wonders...there is also a 2nd part and that is once uv finished doing both nostril fill the pot up again and repeat again but this time as the water flows into the other nostril gently inhale sniff backwards to bubble the water in and spit it out of ur mouth this is an even more powerful exercise than the usual Jal Neti

The music is incredibly, I mean INCREDIBLY, annoying ! Why do people think background music is necessary ? It is just a fucking distraction.

where do you get a neti pot?
i always get sick. i need one.
teenagehead77 2 years ago
any health food store or even pharmacy, but its a 1/4 tesspoon salt (not 1/2 teaspoon), and dont use table salt or sea salt(they irritate) get non iodized salt(or the health food store will have special neti pot salt)
oz22verizon 2 years ago 2
using to little salt burns like crazy too. Its pretty simple but no room for shortcuts.
Its been a lifesaver for me after having sinus surgery that went wrong . very wrong. The DR cut my artery in my sunus's. It was a life changing event but the neti pot brought much relief and still does.
bonzaibb12 2 years ago
Did you sue the doctor?
DR000 2 years ago

I'm sorry, but the music makes no sense.

Nothing works like Afrin, but I use the neti when I don't want to get addicted to the spray (after 2 or 3 days).

Bianca210282 2 years ago 2
I had a TERRIBLE cold last week. My friend suggested doing this, so I bought one. Your video was awesome in demonstration and explaining everything! This thing stopped my nasty cold dead in its tracks after using it 3-4 times the first day and 2 times the next, then once per day after. Clears everything out. Amazing! I cannot thank you enough. Bless you!!!!!
teresa6565 2 years ago 3
That was very informal! My vocal teacher recommended it to me because I have such horrible allergies in the Spring, especially just moving to Southern California from San Francisco. Definately gonna try it sometime soon.
erikaemergency 2 years ago
If you want to save money just use a water bottle that has the drinking nozzle on them. You know the kind that you can close and reopen they are about a dollar or so at the convenience stores then buy some non-Iodized about 2 bucks then do the same thing only put the nozzle of the drinking bottel in or on your nostral this works so well! and it's on;y $3 where as a neti pot is almost $20
kalburiumstormbreath 2 years ago 2
This thing traumatized me, I used it for a while, and one time I used it I accidently breathed through my nose, got into my ear and was very painful. It helps, but I probably can't use it again, freaked me out to the core.

Thank you for sharing. I'm going to go get one.
Thanks a bunch!!

Demo was ok but that loud, cheap music was distracting and VERY annoying.

how many of these videos do there need to be? WHY is everyone SOOOOOOO eager to show this personal thing.... wow, dignity is dead
TellitLikeItIs123 3 years ago
So don't watch it. This is helping people. It my mind it is better for a person to let personal dignity be held aside for the sake of helping others and for the sake of compassion. I googled to find this exact type of video. As a person with chronic sinus problems, this helped me find relief. And I am SO grateful. If he were a doctor demonstrating this to a patient would you call that undignified?

Actually contrary to what "beetlebalm" posted regarding the tap water being bad for your sinuses in this situation - the salt which is added into the water is what kills the bacteria which is in the water and in your nose. Just as in the salt that is in sea water - when you get cut/injured near the sea, dowsing your scrape/cut with the sea water will initially kill the bacteria in the wound.
gimmeawhitewinter 3 years ago
thanks! i totally didn't realize i was putting so little salt...no wonder it used to burn. now i put in a good heap of salt and everything is a-ok!
fangtron 3 years ago
Please avoid using tap water. It's loaded with bacteria. Not so much a problem when one drinks tap water because our immune system takes care of the problems through the digestive process. But when you introduce that bacteria directly into your sinuses, you're asking for some pretty nasty sinus infections. Use sterilized water.
beetlebalm 3 years ago
Tap water works just fine for me, and my doctor's fine with it.
marymactavish 3 years ago
Tap water is OK if you're on "city water." However, it may be an issue if you have well water - and it has not been tested to see what kind of nasties are lurking in it.

thanks for demonstrating your personal technique!
lilolejay 3 years ago
It does not go through your sinuses. It goes in one nostril and out the other.
dogfaceboy47 3 years ago
A more effective method is to use a rubber bulbed baby snot sucker from the pharmacy. Mix a saline solution and add a pinch of Cow brand baking soda to take the sting out of the salt. Suck the solution into the bulb, expel the air and completely fill the bulb. Plug one nostril, squirt the solution in the other nostril while inhaling lightly. You have achieved a perfect balance when some of the solution goes down your throat. This irrigates more of the sinus cavity than does the neti pot .

Do NOT follow this advice! It's dangerous. Air is for lungs -- not salt water. Inhaling leads to the danger of aspirating the water into your lungs.
BeaDaNurse 2 years ago
It doesn't show him breathing in the water. You place it up to one nostril and let it run out the other, via gravity.
