This song belongs to Dalida originally (le temps des fleurs) sung in 1967, this version recorded in 1968 as all musical encyclopedias mention. Dalida sings it much much more better in a way full of emotions
this is one of those songs that make me smile and cry at the same time! takes me back to my childhood and i sing this to my mam at least once a week!!its a beautiful song that gets to your heart strings, and so many years have past, and no im no wiser lol!
TenStarsplus !!!!! I love this fantabulous song!!! In 1970 I was 27 yrs old, and yes those were the days!!!!! Mary Hopkin is still beautiful and will be 60 yrs old on May 3, 2010 !!! Gene Raskin put English lyrics to the Russian gypsy song "Dorogoi dlinnoyu" ("Дорогой длинною", lit. "By the long road"), written by Boris Fomin (1900-1948) with words by the poet Konstantin Podrevskii. "Those Were the Days" is thus credited to Raskin. It deals with reminiscence upon youth and romantic idealism. The first known recording of the song was by Alexander Vertinsky in the 1920s.
Paul McCartney produced the 1968 studio recording by Mary Hopkin.
Not written by McCartney but it was produced by him. An American called Gene Raskin (who sang with the "limelighters" and who recorded it first) wrote the lyrics for the song "Those were the days" and used the melody only from a song called "Dorogoy dlinnoyu" ("By a long road") which was written by the Russian song writer Boris Fomin with words by the poet Konstantin Podrevskii.
Paul heard Raskin singing this in a club some years before Mary recorded it.

I always remember the first time I heard this song. I was visiting My family in Florida and it came over the loudspeaker. This tune is from a Russian song. Yes, This song sounds Russian taste. Bells of troika suite this. I hear this melody is from a Russian Pop song when the days former Soviet Union was estimated.

When I was in the first year of hi-school ,we had Expo'70 in Osaka.
I won the ticket of Merry's concert at the Expo hall. I was so lucky and excited .
When she was singing this song , I gave a loud cry her name "Merry~~” from my seat , she gave me a wave .
Whenever I listen to this song , it takes me back to my younger days ,
This is my younger days' song , " Those were the days "

Well Whether Paul clsaims ownership or not it IS from the song Dorogoi Dorogoyu...
It was a common practice for Some rock peeps in the 60s to claim rights to foreign folk music.
How about "God on our Side" by Bob Dylan and the Irish Traditional "Patriot Game"?

Tommy
