When I was in the first year of hi-school ,we had Expo'70 in Osaka.

I won the ticket of Merry's concert at the Expo hall. I was so lucky and excited .

When she was singing this song , I gave a loud cry her name "Merry~~” from my seat , she gave me a wave .

Whenever I listen to this song , it takes me back to my younger days ,

This is my younger days' song , " Those were the days "

  • music by Boris Fomin

for the history of this song with original russian reccordings just search in Youtube:

Dorogoy dlinnoyu before Those were the days

  • this song i believe was composed by paul mcartney yes check it out

  • Gene Raskin put English lyrics to the Russian gypsy song "Dorogoi dlinnoyu" ("Дорогой длинною", lit. "By the long road"), written by Boris Fomin (1900-1948) with words by the poet Konstantin Podrevskii. "Those Were the Days" is thus credited to Raskin. It deals with reminiscence upon youth and romantic idealism. The first known recording of the song was by Alexander Vertinsky in the 1920s.

Paul McCartney produced the 1968 studio recording by Mary Hopkin.

  • Well Whether Paul clsaims ownership or not it IS from the song Dorogoi Dorogoyu...

It was a common practice for Some rock peeps in the 60s to claim rights to foreign folk music.

How about "God on our Side" by Bob Dylan and the Irish Traditional "Patriot Game"?

  • To FraterMythos

Not written by McCartney but it was produced by him. An American called Gene Raskin (who sang with the "limelighters" and who recorded it first) wrote the lyrics for the song "Those were the days" and used the melody only from a song called "Dorogoy dlinnoyu" ("By a long road") which was written by the Russian song writer Boris Fomin with words by the poet Konstantin Podrevskii.

Paul heard Raskin singing this in a club some years before Mary recorded it.

  • @210357tommy no pete seeger

  • kiran4809 If you were your not 50 as stated on your profile

  • 40 years klater..."Oh my friends, we're older but no wiser,

For in our hearts the dreams are still the same."

    Mine anyway!

  • EXPO 70.....I was there....great time!

    Thanks to leave a comment.

  • Thanks!

This is a comment back to my commenting on 辛島美登里 Midori Karashima, a great singer, covering Those Were The Days in Japanese Lyrics Sorrow Angel, that ended at the 3rd phrase.

    Roma

Tommy

  • I always remember the first time I heard this song. I was visiting My family in Florida and it came over the loudspeaker. This tune is from a Russian song. One of My favorite singers is Helmut Lotti who sings in 8 languages (not Japanese but He could do it) and it is on a CD called From Russia with Love. He has dozens of songs on YouTube.

  • Thanks for leaving kind and lovely commenting!

Yes, This song sounds Russian taste. Bells of troika suite this. I hear this melody is from a Russian Pop song when the days former Soviet Union was estimated.

I have ever listened to Helmut Lotti singing TWTD. His cover has already a year ago in my playlist for "TWTD". His cover is great I like it.

  • An American called Gene Raskin (who sang with the "limelighters" and who recorded it first) wrote the lyrics for the song "Those were the days" and used the melody from the song

"Dorogoy dlinnoyu" ("By a long road" or "along a long road") which was written by Boris Fomin (1900-1948)

with words by the poet Konstantin Podrevskii.

  • Thanks for your exact information on this song. I have many "A long Road" in my playlist "Those Were The Days" that include Russian lyrics sang by a beautiful russian lady. The name is difficult for me to write here in russian. That is from soviet TV and really wonderful with troika bells.

    Tommy

  • Thanks!!!

I have the same one in CD.

I hear the video is from BBC at its studio.

Mary in your video is just a bit coloured!

Then I felt she is really beautiful in yours.

    Please enjoy my channel too.

    Tommy

REALLY Nostalgic!!

Mary is in her 20-year-old then!

For me this live was held just last summer.

    Thanks for your lovely comment.

    Tommy

    PS

Video response by hkship3 is Teresa Teng singing the Those were the days!!

  • Thanks for your video response Teresa singing Those were the days in Chinese!

    It's great! Lovely and Beautiful.

We missed really a treasure lady...

    Tommy

Lyrics in English for this song appears hkship3's video response. Thanks again.

  • After listening to it again, I found myself imagining it as a Tim Burton style soundtrack with skeletons dancing around and drinking in some forgotten haunt. It would make a really good cover song for such a thing.

  • haunting...

  • Thanks for your sweet comment.

The tickets for this live is my first bought ones!

I bought this well in advance . Application before booking was needed.

    Tommy

  • My pleasure.

...and your life has never been the same since then?

I found some songs by her I've never heard before. Thanks for uploading them. It renewed my interest in her. I didn't know some of these albums existed.

  • Expo'70 Osaka

  • it's a great song ,it's so wonderful

  • Thank you for your nice comment ;D

  • Thanks for this, yes she was a beautiful singer, this song is beautiful.

  • Thank you very much for your immediate nice comment!

The Beatles sang in Tokyo and Mary sang in Osaka....Those were the days just I can remember as a year ago.

  • So meloncholic!

Kanojo no koe wa totemo aichu ga arimasu.

    Kotemo samishiku - naru...

  • Thank you for your nice comment!

    I think;

She is really the best "Meistersinger" who can sing any song with her emotion to be included. It's Mary sang it that The Those Were The Days have made world-wide big hit.

Enjoy Mary's fantastic singing post by richpat in my friend list. Among them, Edelweiss must be a treasure one.

    Tommy

  • it was great to listen to this again, thanks my friend !!!*****

  • Thanks for your commenting, too,

  • Mary is too much ... I love it!

  • Yes, she is!

    Thank you for commenting.

    From the Far East,

    Tomoya

  • very nice ;i like mary hopkin to

  • thnak you!

    i like Godiva, too.

  • Thank you , I love you!

  • Thank you for commenting!

I love Mary Hopkin, an extraordinally great singer, in the century.

  • Mary Hopkin is one of the very few genuinely great singers of the last forty years...in chronological order, among this rarified group are: Mary Hopkin, Karen Carpenter, Barbara Streisand, Ofra Haza, Celine Dion, the early Charlotte Church, Celtic Woman...I think that about covers it

  • YES!

She is a GENUINELY GREAT SINGER, SO TALENTED!

  • ... Judith Durham!!

  • i never heard of judith durham before. thanks to you, i just listened to her for the first time. sorry, but i am not impressed

  • Mary opened the concert with "Plaisir D'amour"...That was very very splended!

  • hi Ku

I love her singing "Plaisir D'amour"

But her Welsh version "Pleserau Serch" is the wonderful...

  • Yes, it is very nice!

Now I have her "Plaasure Search" in a bootleg from "Spirits plus Early Recordings (Camblian)", that has her bearutiful pictures with transparent nail on front and on back with some pictures in Kyoto. Maybe every true fan has it ;D.

  • Excellent! :-)

  • Thank you so much ;D

I'm very happy to hear from you!

All photos here are in Japan.

  • Very nice, this was my favorite always.

  • Yes. As for Me, too.

    Very precious song, sang

    by the most lovely woman

    with angelic sweet voice.

This song is available at karaoke bars and clubs anywhere around the world!

  • I think I've made a mistake, Mary didn't recorded 'Streets of London'yet at 1970. She made the album 'Earth Song Ocean Song'at 1971.So would you post the live recordings of 'Goodbye' and 'Tamma Harbour' from the concert of Osaka 1970 (LP or CD). Thanks again.

  • Yes, you are right.

This was produced by Tony Visconti amd he left publishing rights for Mary. Then "Streets of London" is included in Earth Song/Ocean Song and also in "Those were the days" CD 1991-UK issue. Is it right? foR Pat.

  • Today, by the way, I met "POST CARD" at a large CD store downtown Tokyo! Do you understand my excitement and surprise? It was at recommended rack, for Shione Yukawa, a big challenger (very well done!) released new album recently in which she covers Mary's "Voyage of the Moon". The store has UK-EMI issue and also Toshiba-EMI issue. I have bought both. Now I have 3 differnt POST CARDs...;D

  • The best live version of "Streets of London" is on the "Live at the Royal Festival Hall" cd.. Its wonderful.

  • I think so too, crdr69 since the live was held in London.

    How about on "Knock, knock"?

  • Wonderful live version, thanks for posting. This is a bootleg album or CD(M Hopkin Live in Osaka 1970)? Can you post the live performance of 'Streets of London' from the concert of Osaka 1970 as well. Thanks again.

  • Thanks for uploading this,I have never heard this version b4.Mary is a Gorgeous Girl.

  • Gorgeous...yes she is gorgeous!

She is so talented a singer and the sweetest girl in this 40 years 1968-2008.

  • Ja Thank you!

    Mary is the greatest singer.

    This is treasure of mine.

  • Wonerful song, Wonderful singer, Wonderful voice and Wonderful posting.!!!!!

  • Very nice !

  • Thank you!

When I got the tickets, the hall of the Exposite had not been built and only the drawing/illustration shown to us.

  • Very sweet indeed!

  • Yes!

    Sweet memory of mine.

The first purchased EP (ex. classic) is this! and my first attended live is Mary's live at Osaka.

  • Thank you!

  • Great effort!

  • Yes, Thank you!

  • Lovely, we can never have too many 'those were the days' videos!

    thanks KU

  • Thank you!

It is very difficult for me to select next one.

Now here Japan is very hot and wetty season, then "Temma Harbour" is preferred?

Or "One Fine Day" and flowers Otakusa? The flowers named after the Madam Butterfly's real name are fully blooming now and very beautiful. City Nagasaki is once I lived there.

  • Wonderful!!!!

  • Thank you!

    Is she beautiful?

  • Yes, she is!

  • Fantastic! I love this song.

  • Thank you for your comment.

sorry to reply you late according to my Kaput PC!
