I'd be interested in knowing why cities like NYC and other huge metroplexes don't usher in "lazy money" with red-light-running cameras. In midtown Manhattan red lights are merely a reason to slow down and look before crossing the intersection. They seemingly mean nothing, especially to cabs. I'm fine with this as there are few wrecks, and the red lights would be a huge curse to the near-gridlock downtown traffic if adhered to religiously. Perhaps cameras would just be too much trouble there?

In the early days there were a lot of attacks on these cameras. It was not unusual to see one that had been burned. Someone had the bright idea of placing a car tyre around the base of the camera pole and setting it alight. It completely destroys the camera and has to be replaced.

We have the right to be aware of where a safety camera is situated. This is because if one is required then the place where it is situated is a potential accident blackspot. People have got used to them being everywhere. The catch rate is falling all the time. Many areas are removing them because they simply dont make enough money anymore. Here in the UK. We have had these cameras for about 8 years. They are called Gatso cameras. I have never been caught by one but millions have not been so lucky. They were illgal when they were first installed so they changed the name and called them safety cameras.We use Sat Nav that tells us where they are situated. So we get an audible warning when we are approaching a camera. Our government tried to stop us using these devices. They failed to stop us cos they are safety cameras....cont

These cameras do not make us any more safe. It has been proven there are more accidents (people panic and stop causing the car behind them to run into them) than intersections without the cameras.

So how do you counter? These cameras do not make the people more safe. What other reason can you think of for the government wanting to install these cameras? Think about the money. These machines sit there and hand out tickets with almost no overhead.

Your logic fails. The person was already speeding, so therefore they caused an accident because they were speeding, not becuase of the camera.. If I buy a gun and murder everyone in my classroom, is it the gun dealers fault?

Sorry, but your logic is flawed.. becuase you're missing one crucial point. The purpose of these cameras is to make these intersections "more safe". How are they being made more safe if these cameras are causing an increase in accidents? Speeding by itself is not an unsafe behavior. Putting a camera in an intersection, causing a distraction for the drivers, is the root of the problem.

Not to mention the money PRIVATE companies are making off of this.
