Niel has been a constant in my life, for as long as I can remember. My older sister had the album with cherry cherry on it and I got hooked at the age of 8 or 9. I'm now 55 and still listening.
WOW! just WOW! Totally stunning. There aren't many artists who send shivers down my spine. You only have to see the look of adoration in his fans eyes to know. Neil Diamond is a powerful, passionate, pure Genius.
Years ago, my daughter made me watch The Jazz Singer..Icomplained because Im not keen on jazz....Well.I watched it then and have watched it umpteen times since. Never seen a man look so sexy in a sweatshirt.. Saw him recently in an audience with...He still has what it takes. He had the audience eating out of his hands. always will.
Well, nearly 40 years after being moved by Neil's music in my teens I finally got to see him in Birmingham (UK) last Thursday! As a thriteen-year-old I never imagined he'd still be performing when I was 52! And performing so brilliantly.
A phenomenal talent. He sings to thousands at a concert, He sings to millions over the decades. But he has always sounded as though he's singing just to ME, and still will ... Not many singers have that special gift.
For I been released, and i been regained,( Wow!) and i see it in ur eyes before and im sure to see it in ur eyes once again, once again..(I am in a DEEP trans like now!!) lol..Im sure to be this way again, once again, one more time again, just one more time...and Im sure i can dream once again, and other things, ha ha!
Classic Diamond. He "owned" the Greek Theatre when he performed there. This is one of my favorite perferormances of this song. His band here is great! Sing On!!
I don't think he got a nose job. If you look at him in his early photos his face was bit pudgy. As he got older and he thinned out his jaw became more masculine. Even as he got older their were times when he was heavier. I don't think Neil could care less about his looks. He certainly has the money to get hair plugs and color his hair. He doesn't.
I was watching some early videos of Neil - is it my imagination or did he get a nose job? I know he got a lot better looking than his very younger years and I think that is one of the reasons . . . .
If you're gonna allow music to take you somewhere, let it be by someone like Neil Diamond. The emotion is real and strong. Where can Justin Beiber take anyone? I'll tell you: he is taking the pre-teen girls into hormone rages. The real singers like Neil Diamond make us remember our pasts, our heartbreaks, our true loves.
I have loved Neil Diamond since I ws 17 years old. I have never seen him in concert. I have noticed something about him while watching these You Tube performances. He is like a chameleon. First off, I never realized what a beautiful face this man had. He actually changes from one song to another. He exudes sexuality, but thats not what I mean. There is something incredibly spiritual about him. When you actually watch his expressions while he sings there is something almost holy about him.
@rpggyr I totally agree with you when you say ND has a way of changing from one song to another. I have thought this myself having only fairly recently started watching him on youtube. I could not have put it into words, but you have perfectly. I think he is a special person and Ive wasted a lot of years not appreciating him.And yes, he was blessed with a very beautiful face, which just makes me happy whenever I look at it to this day!
@cherrylm2 I have recently rediscovered Neil Diamond. I get a bit melancholy when I think about him being 70 years old. My god where did the time go. I am reading a biography on him that is very interesting. He was very different from the rock stars of his time. He wrote a song about Pot got a lot of heat because he was against all these drugs that were the norm in the 60's and 70's. The man was an enigma. He clearly marched to the beat of his own drum.
@rpggyr Your comments are most poignant! My sister and I attended a concert in
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada in 1977; indeed it was life-changing. I totally agree with your perception of how this man changes from one song to another....I still cannot believe how this man was able to carry an audience with his voice, charisma and body...
This song goes directly to my bones.... so many years listening to it... and the sentiment is the same... Thank you for post the video of one of the best singers ever!!
Thank you for your kind comments, I have strived to be as vocally close to the real Neil as is possible, it s really heartwarming to recieve such high praise and makes what I do all the more worthwhile. As for the sparkly shirt, I can honestly say I dont know, that's for others to judge. Keep listening and thank you again.
I am so honored and lucky to enjoy such a talented person such as ND until today. I wish him good health so we can enjoy more of ND and his music for a long long long time. How many great music artist has passed away, just count our blessings..
Me ! I am a massive Neil Fan, I perform as him and would invite you to listen to my covers of Neil Classics, you will be more than pleasantly surprised, honest. 5 stars, the man is brilliant.
As great as this concert and all the ones that came after have been, it would have been extraordinary if Hot August Night, 1972 had been captured on tape. The Greek Theatre was never the same after those 10 concerts.
Curremt RAP songs full of SHIT can not compare to real life meaning songs. Glad I don't have much more to live see our new generation going down the toilet with their iPod implanted inside their ears.
I have always loved Neil Diamond and always wondered why, this by the way is a personal obsevation, he seemed ignored by top "40" radio stations back in the 7o's, I owned 20 of his albums and could not get enough! But the comments by you folks here tell the real story, This man's talent is endless! I know that we are blessed by certain entertainers, and Neil Diamond is one of them!
This performance is in a different league. A reminder of the talent. Powerful performance from a legend. The song has everything. I am still patiently waiting for a young pretender to his throne. Is there anyone out there? Please.
What a hymn this one is! Neil is surely one of the few outstanding songwriters in our time and to me, this is his signature song. Melody, lyrics, voice, arrangement - everything ist jus as it should be. And most of all: It comes from the heart and will remain there forever.
this was part of the tour that returned him to live performance after a self imposed hiatus--1976-7(indeed the lp and video were released in 77 --good )starting in Australia.Sold out venues there when announced-venues where money was returned as he wasn't going to be at that particular 9venue
Look at those expressions on the audience's faces! Pure emotion listening to this POWERHOUSE! And now in 2010...Our youth are at the mercy of the talentless "hip hop artists" of the day...Glad I'm old enough to remember the beauty found in the music of 1974/1975
@mrob75 I am of the younger generation and I would rather listen to Neil or the Monkees or all those oldies. Ta hell with the music of today. It just doesn't leave the same emotions as songs like this one does.
@mrob75 stop hating on hip hop as if that is the only music out there...people said the same things about jazz music rock blues and pop...all of which neil was influence by.....All music is great even the bad stuff becuase it means something different to each person....Listen to music and you will find some good things but you wont find it on the radio...please
@mrob75 you are so on target mrob....what message (s) if any, are todays youth receiving with the hoppity-hippity crap they listen to anyway......suppose it's all relevant....my parents thought ND was just R&R and I didn't listen to them.....oh well.
@mrob75 It angers me when young people care so little about the diversity of music that they need to pick just one genre or artist of today and put down the rest, as though what they like is so much "better". I'm even more angered when the older generation do the same. I'm glad I'm old enough to remember the first time I heard The Beatles, The Who, Neil Diamond, The Monkees, Gene Pitney, Diana Ross, the list goes on... I grew up in the 90's by the way. Point taken? :)
As David Wild so brilliantly says in his book - "How I Stopped Worrying and Learned to Love Neil Diamond" - if you hate Neil Diamond, then you quite possibly hate yourself!
lyngoodwin and 7425park - you all are just TOO FUNNY!! Agree with you 100% indah007 - expand your vision!! Some people are just unable though...pretty sad!
This was not the song I was looking for when I was planning Dad's "final celebration" this afternoon, but it was so instantly perfect for him. I love it! Dad always loved Neil Diamond when we were growing up, and I remembered that today in my preparations for him. Went out at purchased The Essential Neil Diamond, so today a new generation - my own kids, Dad's grandchildren - have been introduced to this beautiful man.
I was at the Love at the Greek performance. Of the 3 live shows I went to that is the one that entranced me the most. This was one of the songs that just grabbed me and it has never let go. Neil live in performance is amazing.
God, this is beautiful. I can't believe it's taken me this long to actually look up ND on youtube. There are a LOT of videos of him live in concert. I wore out some of my vinyl way back when. Now I'm putting it on ipods! Old dogs can learn new tricks! :-)
Guys loved this guy too - not what you are thinking - but because he could write great songs but it is also a strange phenomenum that his voice improved as he aged . Saw him live 4 times and from New Zealand that is no mean achievement.
This song - well, some people they are never asking why .......
to MOSESCAT69, OMG!!!!!! I thought I was the only person in the world who had shivers up their spine among other feelings every time I heard his voice crack. It happens again on I am...I said on "Hot August Night" I think. It's not as obvious as this one but it still turns me on fire!
Speakin' of funerals, Diamond's response about about the meaning of this song when asked on twitter was, and I quote: "closer to reincarnation than anything else." (posted on twitter 12:27 PM Mar 5th)
" some people never see the lights until the day they die" I hope that most of us here are able to learn from the mistakes we make on our unknown journey. Our paths are not set, or predestined. The only constant is we are all going to die. It is how we live that will define us. And I hope we make it a good life. Peace to all!
This song was suppose to be in The Jonathan Livingston Seagull movie but wasnt finished in time.....what an awesome song and song woth so much passion.
so fantastic..would have been so great to have been there ...just look at the audience, they were mesmorrized... just in another world...soooo gooood. would love to have been his dressing room assistant !!!!!!!!
this was my sign-off song when i worked as a latenight deejay in the 70s and 80's. after i left radio in 1979 i had a hard time finding this song. thanks so much for uploading it. its' just a super song with heartfelt lyrics.
If you enjoy Neil Diamond try his version of "I Dreamed A Dream" from Hot August Night 2 (1987). Compare with Susan Boyle and all the others. Also, check out the change in lyrics. Video link posted above or use search.
I love this song!! I have heard it countless times over the years both live and in my living room. If I went on the tribute cruise this coming Fall, I would love to sing it with the band. Thanks Neil for sharing heart felt moments of your life through your music.
This song was originally written for the Jonathan Livingston Seagull soundtrack in 1973 but never made the album. Diamond therefore carried it over on to his 1974 Serenade album.
Diamond's self-imposed hiatus from live work from 1972 to 1977 probably saved his career as a performer BUT it marked a huge sea-change from progressive pop/rock artistry to MOR which was not to every one's taste. However, with Rick Rubin, Diamond is now back on form with some fine songwriting.
Try dvdfromBrazil. I am sure it is a bootleg, but you get it on DVD. I pray HE will release it on DVD in which I will purchase it... OR, otherwize, just purchase a DVD Recorder COMBO with VCR, and get a copy of "Love At The Greek" on VHS and record it to dvd, as I have done with "I'm Glad You're Here With Me Tonight" et voila, you have it on DVD. I don't condone bootlegs, as I like to support my favorite artist, so buy the original copies (like I do) as soon as they become available!
This song reminds me that every time I see one of you on the street, in a park or in a store that I knew you once...long long ago. Now we pretend that we're strangers.
I've seen the lights. And I've seen the flame. And I've been this way before. And I'm sure to be this way again. For I've been refused. And I've been regained. And I've sung my song before. And I'm sure to sing my song again. Once again. For I've been released. And I've been regained. And I've seen your eyes before. And I'm sure to see your eyes again. Once again. Some people got to laugh. Some people got to cry.
Some people, they got to make it through. By never wondering why. Some people got to sing. Some people got to sigh. Some people they never see the lights, until the day they die. But I've been released. And I've been regained. And I've been this way before. And I'm sure to be this way again. Once again. One more time again. Just one more time..
" Some people, they never see the lights. Until the day they die" Its the mistakes we make along the way is when we question ourselves. As to why we did what we did, or said what we said and regret those actions for a lifetime. We can either give in and blame someone else, or bounce back and learned from it and become better because of it. Yes! were sure to be this way again. But this time we will regain ourselve
Love this song....always have. The words are so profound. Thanks for the post.

She managed to trade marriage to Lloyd-Webber for access.

@7425park What are you talking ? You know nothing about music and singing ?

Oh yeah, I do his stuff at a local pub. But I add more hooks - like inserting "right baby" and other cool stuff. The chicks dig me, man.

I've loved Neil Diamond since I was 13 -- that was 1968! What a gorgeous man, what a beautiful, deep voice!

What a man , why the hell do we have to age.
Beautiful voice and face, such a lovely genuine man also..He is No.1 and always will be...

The absolutely perfect choice for your Dad, this song speaks volumes, neil's voice, the words, perfect x x

I was at the Love at the Greek performance. Of the 3 live shows I went to that is the one that entranced me the most. This was one of the songs that just grabbed me and it has never let go. Neil live in performance is amazing.

Guys loved this guy too - not what you are thinking - but because he could write great songs but it is also a strange phenomenum that his voice improved as he aged . Saw him live 4 times and from New Zealand that is no mean achievement.
This song - well, some people they are never asking why .......

Those years with Neal were great. That era will never be forgotten and neither
will his legacy. He captured the hearts and minds of many with his own true
style. Will we ever see anybody like him again. Wow.

" some people never see the lights until the day they die" I hope that most of us here are able to learn from the mistakes we make on our unknown journey. Our paths are not set, or predestined. The only constant is we are all going to die. It is how we live that will define us. And I hope we make it a good life. Peace to all!

If you enjoy Neil Diamond try his version of "I Dreamed A Dream" from Hot August Night 2 (1987). Compare with Susan Boyle and all the others. Also, check out the change in lyrics. Video link posted above or use search.

I've been released...I've been regained...
