@MarianaTUR There are only 2 Russians in that scene - Prince Igor and his son being captives of the Polovitsian Khan Konchak. The Khan says that as Igor did not ask for mercy he is not a prisoner but an honoured guest equal to a Khan and summons the Polovtsian slaves to entertain Igor and himself.
@tHeWasTeDYouTh Ahahaha, I love how everyone knows this song because of Rahxephon. Heard this one in my childhood, but can't remember when or where. And then, years later the same song in Rahxephon. Bugged me a long time why this song sounded so familiar.
@musashi939 I first heard it in that show but I thought it was made for the show, some years later I bought a video games and the song appeared there so I did some research and found this
Is the choreography set so that they don't dance synchronically? I thought they had to jump and dance at the same time but they don't. Is the choreography that bad or is it meant to be that way?
@kinglymon - me too, this song has always had that effect on me, ever since hearing it as a kid. makes me want to live a simple life off in some cold mountain village at the edge of a black forest
So this was the original opening music the director of nge planned to use.. too bad the moneypeople wanted a pop song instead, it suits so well, beautiful music.
The Polovtsian Dances (or Polovetsian Dances)are ,perhaps the best known selections from Alexander Borodin's opera Prince Igor (1890). They are often played as a stand-alone concert piece. Borodin was the original composer, but the opera was left unfinished at his death and was subsequently completed by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Alexander Glazunov.
costuming is not so good. the guys look too much like skinny ballet boys instead of warriors. they need full shirts. and the girls look like porcelain dolls. very pretty, but....

Exquisite music, chorus, staging and choreography. I would love to see this fully staged at the London Coliseum although I fear that the cost may prove prohibitive. Very sad.
I am totally stuck with this. I have always loved Prince Igor but for some reason I do not know why I keep listening to this beautiful piece nowadays. Borodin is definitely my favourite composer after Tchaikovsky :)
@salrubz: MAYBE IT'S BECAUSE YOU USE ALL CAPS AND THAT MAKES YOU THINK THEY'RE YELLING ALL THE TIME AND YOUR EARS ARE ACTUALLY LOWER THAN YOUR EYES BECAUSE OF IT. just a guess.
who is the female dancer at 02:12, is that Polina Rassadina? totally love the way she moves, it's mesmerizing! though not in sync with the music, as is the entire Polovtsian dance part, but that's the choreographer to blame for, not the dancers i guess.

You're not too far off with your assessment of the Polovtsy as Mongolians. The Kazakhs, Cumans, and other peoples of the Crimea were either of Mongolian ancestry or were their vassals. I played the solo clarinet in high school..this was my favorite song. I thought I knew this piece inside and out then I find out today it's more correctly the Polovtsian Dances and not Polyvetsian. Ha, I guess since it was during the Cold War the publishers were wrapping it as quasi-Polynesian!
NO, stoptheplot. I'm sorry to have to say that you're wrong, and here's why:
The confusion regarding Polóvcian vs. Polovetsian has to do with a peculiarity in the Russian language (the 'fleeting e'), whereas the singular is "Polovjéc" (from which the term "Polovetsian" is derived), BUT the plural is "Polóvcïy". [I.e., the 'e' after the 'v' disappears!!]
Otherwise, a superb performance - lovely playing, singing and dancing (and I like the camera-work here very much!).
[NB, In case of any confusion, the letter 'c' in my Russian-transliteration system (unless followed by 'h' IMMEDIATELY after!) is always 'ts' as in 'bolts'.]
The dancing and the costumes are beautiful, but the camera cuts it into little tiny bits! I wish it would do what Balanchine did, and give us more full shots, showing composition. Let us enjoy the beauty.
awesome. what a spectacle!

5/5 stars

[NB, In case of any confusion, the letter 'c' in my Russian-transliteration system (unless followed by 'h' IMMEDIATELY after!) is always 'ts' as in 'bolts'.]

The dancing and the costumes are beautiful, but the camera cuts it into little tiny bits! I wish it would do what Balanchine did, and give us more full shots, showing composition. Let us enjoy the beauty.

Can you please tell us why? Thanks in advance!
[If it has anything to do with the sound, please remember that Russians don't automatically sound like Westerners, and nor should they!]
