@chuckmekere - Very much a myth. 3,000 mile oil drain intervals were from the 1960's, but it is now 50+ years later. Engines are much better, oils are much better, technology progresses. Check my channel for the 409,000 mile oil change video.
@HiTechOilCo Well considering that my oil is pretty dead at 3k miles and my car maker recommends 7500 mile intervals, I'm not sold on that 3k miles is a myth. Hell I'm thinking of going to 2500 mile intervals because of how bad the oil is coming out at 3k miles. This is using mobil one. Now friend's car was fine til 5k intervals using the same mobile one oil, but I do not agree with blindly following anything like they want you to do.
@HiTechOilCo Tuned turbo car used for racing about 2-3 times a month. Yeah I know...not exactly normal. But that is the point...you should cater for your personal situation and not just blindly go about things.
Some of the statements are true to an extent. This topic is a two way road. My ford and Chrysler manuals specify to change oil at 3k, whereas my gm and kia manuals both specify 5k, but was told by the respective dealers to change at 3k because of the type of driving that i do. the biggest myth is more wear when the oil is changed at 3k vs 7.5k. I have owned multiple vehicles (sorry too big of a list now) and have changed every last one at 3k or 3 mo. my 93 ford had 250k when it got t boned
@MrSlipperypeet - BMW has been using 15,000 mile drain intervals for years with no adverse effects. That is using a good quality synthetic oil of course. :)
Not a myth. If you are like past your first 30,000 miles, 3000 mile oil changes will save you from sludge, broken rods/lifters/valves up until 300K
