if anyone knows how to perform this entire trick, please message me! seriously, please message me if you know how or if you know where there's a "how to" online!
One other thought. The card spread directly infront of him has 2 red cards surounded by black cards on either side. I carn't quite see, but i'm guessing the other red card next to the King of hearts, is the 3 of hearts. With the suggestion of 'don't now pick the 3 of hearts', the decision of the 'king' was pretty straight forward. The suit however, see my other posts below.
Angle of card spread. Look at the shape the four objects form (glass, cards case, cig pack, spread of cards) from 1:36 to 1:38. Pause it. If stephen fry looks straight down at that moment, he's got the red diamond crinkled table cloth in the background, plus the broad outline image of a K created from: (the card spread + the crinkled line from the middle of the card spread down to the wine glass). He also sees a king directly in front of him, conveniently placed in the middle of the spread.
anyone notice his hands when he is talking to stephen? its the shape of a heart at 0:38 and right after he does the hand guesture when he says "do light up" signify a k? just thoughts
@FordPerfect: and also when he say "big 3 and a big heart" he raise a hand, then the other to make the sensation of adition, 10 + 3 = the king. and also he is making the atention to focus his head on the center (the king on the center). Maybe....Maybe that`s just a random conection i did, because i believe that he use suggestion but maybe wath i just said makes no sense...and also my english is really bad. xD
amazing how it's done, a5noble2 gave a big hint with the 8 packs, but is explained in his pure effect book and surprisingly easy and foolproof to perform :)
After he slides the pack together again on the first showing, he twists the pack round 180 degrees before putting it down. So when he slides them out again, he is actually showing the halves of the card that were previously hidden. So Stephen did see the King of Diamonds first, then replaced by the King of Hearts when the trick pack was turned around.
I'm gonna guess how he did some of it.. Remember he said "now don't pick the 3 of hearts" when he said this, the other guy was NOT going to pick hearts of any number. He then spread the cards out, and the guy saw a red king and since his mind was saying "DONT PICK HEARTS" he did king of diamonds. How Derren got the king of diamonds to show the most is a mystery.. Oh and look at 2:20. He drops the Cigerette and picks up the card.
uh... ok. I never said the trick wasn't good because he didn't smoke the card.. but whatever. I was just pointing out how he did a part of the trick.. but I guess if english is your 3rd languge you might misunderstand that.
I can see your logic and i like it, especially the cigarette bit. But i hate to tell you that the real method is completely foolproof, and as clever if not even more cheeky than your method. But nice thinking - you're not TOO far off.
This is a great trick, its explained in his "Pure Effect" book. I like how when he put the card in his mouth he still had some smoke in his lungs that he could blow out to make it look like he actually lit the card.
I'm gonna go out and buy like 8 decks of cards now so I can perform this trick too lol.
I loved the subtle change he did when he dropped the cigarette and replaced it with the card between 2:20 and 2:22. Brilliant. Still can't figure out how he did the rest of the trick, kudos to anyone who can!
It's quite beautiful how that card materialises in his hand with a flick isn't it? It's also nice how they picked the perfect camera angle for us to catch it if we so wish, the director could easily have hidden that with a lower shot, but no, it's there for all who want to see.

It would be really good if there was a version of this just focusing on Stephen Fry's face.

I can only figure out how he MIGHT have chosen for a diamonds card. Look at the tablecloth.

To add to the subtle system of suggestion, look at the diamond shape his hands combine to make at 1:24, then tells him to burn it in.
