@longer757 No, not unless you are in neutral, which isn't in gear. You have to have the clutch fully in to completely stop without stalling if you are in gear, but you can only take off in first.
when shifting into like second, is lik when you take off, like you hav to evenly realse clutch and press gas or can you hit clutch shift into 2nd and thn realese clutch completly thn hit gas?
FYI Soggy Rice - you can't burn out the clutch if you hold the clutch in. Burning the clutch requires friction - there's no friction when you're holding it in. Don't be a bullshitter.
@matthmatthmatth He's partly correct, actually. The more RPM you have the moment you engage the clutch the more it burns. Braking or engine braking before engaging the clutch drops the RPM and reduces burn.
@johnnyostrawb33ry The gas is not what burns the clutch, the friction caused my differing revs is. The more your engine and gear revs differ when you disengage the clutch the more you burn it. If your gears are moving slowly and you rev your car up, and then engage the gears (for example hard launch), your clutch burns.
Then again braking without the clutch for as long as possible is also fuel efficient on a longer scale.
I was understanding his comment that you don't want to hold the clutch in while sitting at a red light. The car is idling. If you place the car into neutral and let out the clutch, there's no issue. It's the lowest RPM you can get.
@matthmatthmatth Probably. Yeah, just engaging the clutch while waiting at the lights etc. is no problem, as the clutch is fully engaged and doesn't hang on to the gears. That won't do a thing for it.
if you push in the clutch and hold it down, that means its basically neutral , but how does it burn the clutch if you hold the clutch pedal down as you remained stopped, just wondering thats all lol, nice video
This video is a terrible excuse for a "How To" guide. Please people don't use this as a guide! Ask somebody you know who drives a manual transmission, or look up an industry recognized instructor's video guide!
Also, I gotta compliment your driving skills judging by your other videos. I find it awesome how you're good enough with a manual transmission to perfectly illustrate all the things you SHOULDN'T do. haha
automatic is dangerous, because you don't know the ratio between the accelerartion and how much you should push the pedal, this ratio changes from gear to gear. but in Manual you have the total control of your car
@brahim121985brahim - Automatic is dangerous? Isn't that a bit of an exaggeration?
I find that for sub-2-litre cars, I would rather shift the gears myself, but in cars above about 2.5 litres, it gets harder and harder to justify getting a manual. Most modern automatics work well with bigger sixes and V8s, and I don't think I could do a better job with a shift lever and clutch pedal.
@JBofBrisbane I agree. For larger automobiles with big engines, automatic is the way to go, but for small cars with small engines, I'd much rather have control over the gears.
Prime example: My aunt has a 2003 Cooper with an automatic transmission, and I really don't like it. When starting at red lights the car has a tendency to jerk if you don't give it the perfect amount of gas. Meanwhile, my friend has a 2004 Cooper with a five-speed that he let me drive, and it was wonderful. So smooth.
I have a question: do you let go of the clutch a little first, then give gas to get moving, or do you give it gas first, and then start to let go of the clutch? I'm a 17 year old learning how to drive stick...
@831NorCal2424 yes you need to press the clutch ALL the way down and then slowly press the brake to come to a stationary position. if you want to just slow down, just let your foot off the gas and press the brake slowly, you only need to press the clutch all the way down to come to a stop sign etc, hope this helped
@831NorCal2424 Why is this comment so highly rated? It's written poorly, makes no sense, and obviously shows how many ignorant americans don't know the first thing about driving stick.
@831NorCal2424 ok ill try keep this simple my friend, you only need to use the clutch when your in gear and the car is not rolling at all
if you let go of the gas whilst rolling you will not have to use the clutch unless the car comes to a complete stop which will result in your car stalling(engine turning off).
most drivers press the clutch as there coming to a stop so yes you would use the clutch all the way to break
Good vid for someone who has never driven a stick. It's really difficult teaching an adult who's only driven an automatic for 20+ years, and has hardly even ridden in a manual-shift car. One mistake they make is that they keep their foot mashed on the go-pedal while trying to shift. In 30 years, it'll be a lost art -- like using a choke to start a car. Sad, really.
hahah i thought that driving with stick is was some term for something cool, but its just the stick, forgot that Americans learn how to drive automaticly ownly, in my country, its not often you see people drive auto.. lol
you should downshift into second gear always when your slowing down or whatever gear is suitable to avoid using too much braking. use the engine to slow down when going down hills not the brakes, thats the main advantage of a manual car
@calikusssh23 I usually use handbrake if uphill is big so you don't have to worry about switching pedals with your foot. The rest is pretty self explanatory.
also.. how the fuck do u burn ur clutch if u clutch when ur moving..? the only thing that would happen if you clutch before braking is your engine will rev to a higher rmp u god damn goofus holy fuck
@Mari0Bros4 calm the fuck down downer.. all i said was hes wrong and he shouldent be making videos if he doesent know that the clutch disengages the power of the engine to the gears..

I am a paraplegic with no use of my legs and i know i can drive stick better then you. If you want to teach someone to drive stick take them to the biggest hill you can find and make them get the car moving forward without touching the gas. Pressing the gas is the biggest fault when teaching someone to drive stick. they generally use to much gas and launch the car. Every time you stop you don't want to be in gear. it is easier to control the break and hand brake then it is the clutch andtheshift
