awesome band! omg! i think i mustve seen angel at least 3 to 4 times way back in the olden days. lol. gotta aay every time they were excellent. very memorable. glad to see they showed up in my search here.
He sounds the same as he did in the 70's. It makes me wonder why Frank took such a different direction on the 1999 CD. Some reviewers assumed he'd lost his range but that's obviously not the case.
Wicked write up dude! Thanks for the history. I was introduced to this song/band in the early 80s and finally thought to look it up on youtube... Awesome memories and so many different versions. Thanks.
keyboard player greg guiffria now part-owner/vip several casino const. jobs in gulf port/las vegas, (way to go greg!) back stage party at superjam, busch stadium 1978 was a concert moment at its finest
Seen them at the Ambassodor Theatre in St. Louis with Journey when Journey rocked before they got that fag singer. Accidently got fourth row center tickets from Spectrum Head Shop. Two days before the show we were just hanging around Spectrum and some dude came in and told the clerk he had four tickets he couldn't use . Talk about being at the right plac at the right time. Turned out to be one of the best concerts of my life. Now I can't hear Tower loud enough. Man what a show!
@dabbadabbadoo1 I was in the center of the second row of the balcony and your seat is the only one I wanted more! You are so right about Journey. That was when they actually rocked! Still one of the best concerts I ever attended.
Pops can really have their head up their ass though because Starz was trying to come back to STL again but the prick in charge of bookings wouldn't even return Richie's phone calls!
Don't know if it was same show or not but.. saw Angel headline in St. Louis with Journey at the last show for the Ambassodor theater!... Punky was good that night but Journey!.. with the new album just released Spaceman they rocked the house..
I saw them at the Fox AND at Kiel Opera House. Yeah, I'm that old. ;^) At the Fox, it was supposed to be Camel and Renaissance. Camel didn't show, but it was a great show none the less. It was the first time I heard a Mellotron M400 blasted at mega decible levels. Who would've thought that I'd own one fifteen years later.
I seen Angel in concert in Cleveland Ohio back when they first started out.Good times when the bands were great and rocked your ass off.The Angel face talked and brought out each Angel.
Great to see them back in action.I know that Micky Jones recently passed away but what about Felix Robinson and Greg Guiffria. Punky should have joined them as well but maybe in he future, who knows?.I saw them in the 70's with the hologram and all the great affects.
@slagdraggin1313 There's no Giuffria either, but Frank Dimino alone is worth calling it Angel. The players are all quite competent to play the music, but Frank's unique voice is there! I would sure love for Punky and Gregg to be there, but I am glad to see Frank taking Angel back on the road in whatever form he can get together.
a great K-SHE classic band playin a true classic!! i heard about them commin to st.louis but could'nt make it to the show!! this looks way to small to be the arena!! are ya sure it's not pops? if any one knows i'd love to hear!! thanx k.c.
This might have been the Checkerdome but it looks more like the Keil Opera House in St. Louis to me. I know I saw them at Keil once, probably earlier than this where the entire band wore white jump-suits and I think they opened with the Tower.
@kissvideofan You must be really dedicated to the stuff. I just got a flashback of Tel Exchange ringing in my ear and caught up with other great tunes. I get these kicks every 5 yrs or so. It,s the music, not the capes!
Remember seeing them at the old Hemisphere Arena in San Antonio back in 1980,they were part of a 5 band lineup. What a blast! The keyboard setup was incredible.
Late '78 or early '79 as I recall. Man, I sure loved their !st 2 LP's. The Palace was such a cool place to see bands---and I rarely missed a show back then even though $7.50 was a half a day's pay. I'm surprised that no one seems to remember Angel's pre-show theatrics leading into Tower. That talking sign was over the top for it's day.
I saw show, Gresh, in Albany NY with Molly Hatchett warming up. There were sets of 3 cubes on stage, then put in a vertical stack. When sign lit up, opened its eyes and started talking everyone shit their pants!!! Band members popped open the cubes when the sign (reciting pseudo-Genesis) introduced them. The other thing I remember was the drum kit. The bottom of all the Tom-Toms were curved and flanged like the end of a tuba, aiming out at crowd. Never saw kit like that before or since.
Wow, thanks for the video, I went to see Rush at the Zembo Mosque in Harrisburg Pa. many years ago and when they said please welcome Angel it was like who the hell are they but I found out real quick. Damn good band
I grew up in St. Louis on KSHE, too. They played some great stuff back in the day. I don't hear that brand of rock and roll in Austin, that's for sure!
Haa.. I was also at that show at the Orpheum in Boston, I still have the ticket stub. The back up band was Sass. :-) Gotta love Angel, and I hear they are back on tour, but Dimino the only original member... too bad
i saw Angel once wit THE GODZ and once with Molly Hatchet Hatchet backed up any and everyone even UFO i must have seen them 10 times and they rocked everytime
Wow Angel and The Godz together. Holy Crap, thats like heaven and hell. Eric and the Godz were always bad ass mothers. And the heavenly sounds of Angel. Both bands were on the same label Casablanca, well the Godz were on a small sister label.
I saw ANGEL headline at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston, Massachusetts. A great show. Not the greatest but by far the most bizarre that I have ever seen !!!
Frank and Barry are the only original members in the lineup nowadays. LIttle known fact, Dimino actually sings the song "Seduce Me Tonight" on the Flashdance Soundtrack (billed as Cycle V)
on the night of their show in DAYTON,OHIO in 1980 myself and 3 friends were at a music store/ head shop in dayton, all had the money but one guy said he would get in serious trouble if he went,i was 14 the others were 17 and the DRIVER took his side, so we didnt see that show. i later heard my girlfriends older brother telling me what a kick-ass show it was.SUCKS how one persons actions can affect so many.kinda like the DICKHEAD IN THE WHITE HOUSE THE LAST 8 YEARS!it was billed the ROCK MARATHON
I saw Angel at the April Fool's Day Jam in 1980 at Kiel Opera House. It was great. I can't remember who else was there though. It was Mahogany Rush and two other bands. I'm pretty sure I've still got my ticket stub. LOL...I'll have to look it up.
I saw Angel twice in St. Louis. The first time was at the Fox with Renaisance (sp). Camel was supposed to be there but canceled. The second time was at the Kiel Opera House. These guys were GREAT!! I used to refer to them as Kiss without makeup and with talent. Barry Brandt was amazing. He could give Neal Peart, Phil Ehrart (Kansas) and Phil Collins a good run for their money. The Fox show was the first time I'd ever heard a Mellotron live.
Tower, what a classic unappreciated 80's hit. This iteration on the band is into it and so is the crowd....and hey, isn't that what rock n roll is all about? No they didn't make it big, but every great band, every great performer started out in a "Walmart" sized club.
In 1979 I was 15 years old and my older brother took me to see Angel and Molly Hatchet at the Morris Civic in South Bend, IN.
These guys blew me AWAY! They should have been as big as Kiss. Too bad they did not get the recognition they greatly deserved. Barry Brandt was one of my biggest drumming influences after seeing these guys. Cool Video.
i saw that tour at the civic center in Poughkeepsie NY i always liked Punky's sound and Barry Brandt was a great drummer i have Angel on vinyl which i still play
At harlem high school, in the gym, molly hatchet was the opening act I was there. I thought it was the Greatest opening I've ever seen. you from rockford?
This is the same tour which we saw at The Orpheum, in Boston. I've only been looking around here for Angel, maybe the last half hour - and I was looking for that opening sequence which you described. Yeah - it was pretty awesome, alright...
Oh, yeah! Remember that concert well (at the American Theater). Opening act was Piper, Billy Squire's first band. Then David LaFlamme took the stage and, as you remember, was soon booed off of it (save for a brief respite during White Bird). I remember the chick also singing vocals (his wife) giving the finger to the crowd while she beat a tambourine on her hip. And then Angel's introduction was mind-blowing. Never saw anything like it!
The singer and drummer are the original members of Angel in this video. The guitar player is Steve Blaze who is the original guitar player for Lillian Axe.Not sure who is playing bass on this video,Randy Gregg played most of the shows with Angel since they have playing shows over the past few years.
Thats to wierd I was a big Angel fan was at both recordings for their live concert also talk to the bass player for an hour at the filming of the movie Fox's then heard Rush and never looked back.
This band brings back so many cherised memories from the 70's. I never got the chance to see them live. I love this video especially the keyboard effects at the end!!! I'd love to see them on a reunion tour in Las Vegas!!!!
This is a great band. Unfortunately, without Punky Greg, and Felix it's a little bittersweet. I love "Sunday Morning" best, and the first 4 albums were smoking but I lost them when I discovered Rush. I always thought the recordings were a little poor, so hearing Rush's tight sound and precise playing really appealed to me. But, I still love this band!
