@Wikingersohn93 Why would you say that. Looking at this we see the advancement of archery technology from the bare bow to the recurve and of course a fantastic Turkish bow. The compound bow is a great step in technology advancement to the bow. Every bit archery. I do appreciate your pride in the traditional archery. It is a foundation we should never forget. I would like to try it someday, however the compound bow is here to stay and quite enjoyable.

@7archers Well, I simply don't get were the advantage of the technologie is. Where is the challenge? If people don't want any additional challenges apart from aiming why don't they simply shoot with guns?

I never was into competetive sportshooting. I just think looking back and feel what people did back then when the bow was a needed weapon is far more interesting and challenging then shooting with thes high-tech "bows". However it's everybodies choice with what they do like to shoot.

Grmph... most 'longbows' shown are actually flatbows.. But then again, I'm a pain-in-the-u-know-where.. ;o)

A true longbow is D-shaped, no handle.

Oh.. and demolishing all kinds of targets and punching holes in steel surfaces is also a noble goal in my book (A).

everybody can shoot with a bow which aims itself..... give them an old school bow and their fingers will get hurt.... and besides, people don't hunt with those compound gadgets.... you hunt with a normale long bow.... why would you hunt if you can afford such a bow :S

The longbow was not originally English. It just made it's most significant mark historically in the hands of english archers during the 100 years war. And it was kept very popular in the UK as pastime after the bow lost any military importiance to gunpowder.

in britain it became compulsory for everyone to train with the longbow it was either an hour a day or a week either way becaue of it we had the best archers in europe and when we went to war with countrys in europe they feard our longbows because they shot furthuer faster and more powerfully than the european crossbows

@djsarchery No I do not, the only equipment apart from my longbow/arrows is a finger tab *avoid nerve damage and pain in the fingers* and an arm guard *obvious reasons a string flying at a few hundred kilomenters is gonna hurt.

It ruins 3 fundamental, firstly instead of having to learn how to properly release, stance to keep the bow stable, and instinctive shooting. its simply spoon fed to you. you just go ok target 20m line it up on sights press button. how is that archery sounds like playing a video game.

Well said! The art of handling and shooting a longbow is instinctual and when you have been taught the basics the rest is entirely up to the archer. Only constant practise makes you proficient in this discipline!

Quite so! The term 'Recurve' refers to the shape of the bowlimbs which curve back toward the back of the bow when unstrung. This shape stores more energy when drawn thus providing more power than, say, a longbow for the same draw weight making it more efficient.
