every time they were on the bus he blamed someone for not playing well then went on a really long road in the middle of nowhere and kicked them off and left them there
Buddy was like this from time to time but only when his frustration with the bands playing was to much to bare. At the time it seemed harsh but looking back now, some 32 years later, he was a perfectionist and expected no less from his band. As a disciplinarian his methods weren't exactly 'politically correct' but did indeed get results as is evidenced by the recordings.
Buddy Rich was & will be one of the greatest drummers to ever play the instrument, particularly in the field of jazz. Perhaps the person who made this tape (a pianist who was working with him at the time) did not expect it to go viral and regrets his actions, but in any event, it was profoundly disrespectful both to Buddy and the ENTIRE HISTORY OF JAZZ. Instead of being grateful for having a steady jazz gig and working with one of the greatest in the history of this music, he presents him

He was more hot-headed than Buddy Rich when he didn't like what we did in his store. My dad was similar: he was also an east-coast Italian. He would also go ballistic when people didn't do for him what he had a right to expect.

Buddy was a master who played almost every night for more than 60 years with the best musicians that ever lived. He gave this punk a chance to "make it" with the best big band in the world. Buddy helped many people and gave musicians chances where other people wouldn't. He expected them to do a professional job. But, unfortunatly he got some young punks who couldn't do the job. They just complained and whined. I'm glad Buddy talked like that to him. He deserved it.

Steve Marcus (Buddy´s tenor soloist for 13 years): "I was never scared of Buddy. I loved him too much to be scared"..."These people are not your average people. If you want to hang out with people like Buddy, Toscanini or any of those "close to their feelings" kind of guys guys you must expect to get burned here and there. You can´t judge them like you judge the average person on the street."
I have no problem with this. If this offended anyone then they were not forced to play with him. Buddy Rich was the best and he expected the best. For good or bad, geniuses are like that. if you couldn't handle it, there were 50 other people ready to take your place. it is what it is.
My drum teacher was talking about an old friend from Toledo, Ohio that was in Buddy's band. He was late showing up to the bus after a concert and Buddy was waiting outside for him. Buddy started cursing at him and the guy's not phased by it, then Buddy (who knows Karate) got into a karate stance. Then the guy actually punched Buddy Rich and Buddy was knocked off his feet and fell on the ground. After that he and Buddy were close friends, and that guy even dated Cathy Rich for a while.
Apparently he had certain hand techniques which are very technically difficult. He also had a reputation as being a difficult personality. In his day he was considered one of the greatest.
After thisI would love to hear a real jazz master like Miles or BIrd rip Buddy to shreds about the fact that he plays the bass drum to god damn loud, has none of the subtlety or swing of the real cats like Papa Joe Jones. And how dare he flail are over the place begging for attention. Why doesn't he calm the fuck down and try to play some smooth groove.
a lot of people admire his hand chops, not his musicality. When it comes down to it, musicality is by far the most important thing. The people that think he is so great are rock drummers who don't know anything about jazz. Ask a jazz musician who the greatest drummers are and I guarantee on 99% of the lists, Elvin Jones, Roy Haynes, Jack DeJohnette, Art Blakey, Tony Williams and probably a hundred more names will come up before there's a mention of Buddy Rich.
well of course jazz musicians are going to mention drummers with musicality before Rich, he never took lessons, so im guessing he played jazz by ear. Ill be honest, ive never been in jazz band, nor do i know how to play legitimate jazz, but people back then put a label on Rich as being the best drummer in the world. Im not going to say that there arent people better than him, but i admire his playing like most drummers do
well he's certainly not the first guy to learn by ear. There's a whole lot of drummers in every genre that learned by ear, that does not affect your 'musicality' positively or negatively. My question is who are these 'people' that you say put this label on him and what does that even mean. Most people don't have good ears and are just impressed with flash. Buddy was definitely a great drummer but I would say not even worth mentioning amongst the best. Maybe he had the biggest ego...
It means exactly how i typed it? You can search who is the best jazz drummer, and there are like thousands of sites who mention him being the best. "Drummerworld" and "100 greatest jazz drummers" are just a few who mentions his as arguably or the greatest jazz drummer
that 100 greatest jazz drummers list is laughable, same with the drummerworld claim. Any jazz list with Terry Bozzio and Simon Phillips that omits Jeff Hamilton, Jake Hanna, Larry Bunker, Victor Lewis, Ralph Peterson, Gregory Hutchinson, Terri Lyne Carrington is a joke. There's no qualifications needed to put up websites. You should put one up with Travis Barker, Neil Peart and Buddy Rich as the 3 greatest drummers ever. Then you can say it's on a list so it's 'arguably' true.
it's funny because i never said anything about the sites having valid information, i clearly stated that people put Rich as one of the best jazz drummers, and those sites obviously did. It doesnt matter how good their credentials are, all it matters is that people put him as one of the best. The statement that he is the best jazz drummer is an opinion, and you asked for people who labeled him as that, and i found them. My argument is validated by peoples opinions not on factual info. But peace!!
You inspire, you pull them together you bring out the best as you practice. If someone is a problem, you and another player under you talk to that one. If he is a problem, you have to dismiss him. You never dress your band down.
I find it quite extraordinary the number of people who have commented here who met him ONCE at a gig and feel qualified to defend his continually appalling behaviour. Those of us who spent time actually in the band know the real truth. He was, without question, the world's biggest prick! Nothing to do with wanting the best for his fans. He was just a prick!!
Buddy had high standards there is nothing wrong with that....Many greats are like that because their passion is like a burning flame....some people never experienced
this kind of "motovation" so they stay the way they are and do not grow as players...Buddy was a tough boss in a tough business to get paid in....try giggin for a few years and you will be eatin in cheap places and watchin every penny....
I have only seen the kit once, it was a pearl finish Slingerland set with Zildjan cymbals. It had all the stands and a pearlized stool. My nephew said the snare head was signed. "you have no excuses now!! All the best Buddy". That is all I know about the set. Buddy said it was just extra gear he had laying around the house. He was a prince of a guy.
If you think Buddy Rich is tough on his band check out Axl Rose, Paul Mc Cartney, Steven Tyler, Noel gallagher........It's Buddy's name on the marquee, and it's Buddy who has to answer if the show sucks. I found him to be wonderful the time that I met him as a 15 year old kid just getting into drums. He spent 4 hours with me to show me everything about the drums, and all I asked for was an autograph. I miss this dude. Best drummer ever.
What the hell doesSarah Palin have to do with this? Way to try to work your politics into everythig A-Hole. Oh!! I wonder what he would say about Palin?!?!?!?! Sounds to me like he wants his employees and people around him to pull 100% of their own weight. Sounds to me like he aint into givin anyone a free ride. Sounds to me like you play your A Game everyday or get the FUCK off his bus. Sounds to me like a Republican , Dillhole.
Musicians who do things intentionally to "get back at" are anything but professional. If they really did what they're accused of, he should've fired those responsible and canceled the tour.. or he could hire local musicians wherever he was playing. Lots of people good enough, professional enough... and would have been more than happy to get the gig. Thats the problem with a lot of musicians I've known, they get too big for their breeches. Tell them they're good.. and delusion takes over.
@margovallen We need to clear some thing up now. Buddy was suffering with 2 herniated discs and was on heavy pain medicine. This made him quite angry, and he knew he had a problem. After the surgery he was a different guy. You are also quite confused if you think local musicians could play our book. Are you serious. Some of those phases took us days of practice to dial in. Buddy did not cancel tours ever!! He felt he owed the audience the best show possible every night.
@pal51961 I understand about Buddy's ills. I also understand that he was not the easiest person to work for because he took it all so very seriously, was a frustrated perfectionist and believed in giving his audience nothing less than the very best of the very best. These are attributes that put him way up above all the rest. I've seen Buddy Rich & the Killer Force twice. Perhaps, my 'local musician' statement was a stretch.. but, there are lots of people worthy of being in his band.
@margovallen I agree there are local musicians that could play the book, but not without intense rehearsal. Every chair in the band can solo if called upon and that is not easy to find in a local musician. Bottom line, Buddy was a good guy. He was like a stern father that would not put up with any bull. All perfectionists are difficult to work for. I worked for Burt Bacharach and he fired me for missing an intro that he decided to change 1 hour before the show. Now that is a prick.
@pal51961 I understand the mindset and nature of the frustrated perfectionist... as I am one and I'm not in a band.. haha! I'm difficult to work with at times.. and refuse to follow idiots therefore, if it's not going to be right, I won't play.. and that is my decision. If people don't care to work hard at rehearsal only after having honed their personal skills at whatever they do then, whatever. Sadly, there are way more of the lackadaisical types than not. I'm a BR fan.. he has my respect :-)
@margovallen But nobody has the right to speak to a group of people in ANY situation the way he does here. If I were one of the musicians he was screaming and swearing at, I'd get up and knock his block off (and yes, I know he was a black belt or something, but I'd give it a try anyway). It's one thing to be a perfectionist, it's another to be a schmuck.
@ghb61 I would tend to agree with you at face value.. without knowing all the details.. however, if grown men did something in a performance situation to "zing" him.. trying to teach him a lesson or get even, they're idiots.. unprofessional .. and depending on my mood, may very well would fire them right then and there. If Buddy had come down ill and had to cancel, he would cancel. This deal is just really close to such a situation. You've got people of whom will do you like that, get em gone.
I wanted to add something for you people that think that Buddy was a prick. I once informed Buddy that my nephew, who was a North Texas grad and great drummer, had his gear stolen with his van and he was dirt poor. 1 week later 13 boxes arrived at his apartment. Inside was a full kit of Buddy's personal "extra" gear he had laying around. He has, and still plays that kit every night of the week. That is what kind of man "the boss" was. RIP old friend.
ya well I am Buddy's brother and four of the horn players in his band, and I can say that he has good days and bad days. You guys should seriously talk a bit more about how well you know buddy, otherwise nobody will believe you. ME for example, I spent several years as his floor tom. what have you done!
@ruinawish shakespeare is a rythmic play. i love it. but its mushy lovey (hinting at romeo and juliet) not ceasar. because they killed she killed herself for him. its sappy and a cleche. its not real life. thats where im coming from dumb ass. so before you diss someone get your facts trait and hop off me
he was allways firing bands players sometimes he would kick them off at the next stop also he would chalenge them at the local YMCA in the ring oh ya he was also excellent in boxing
my two cents; I was a little shocked that this is the voice of the drumming hero so many people admire and idolize...thats no good, as a roll model. but DAMN, now that is some seriously heavy convictions, I'm sure he's had his share of personal issues, but it's still a vulgar display of power...wow...he really let's em have it straight up and iron tailed.
stinkingly un-touchably talented/devoted, but never admire, or work for this asshole, if you have self respect...God DAMN can he rip it up!
I worked with Buddy in the 70's. He fired guys in the first set and rehired them at intermission, no shit.....twice. He fired a trombone player for making a face when he called out #28 (channel one suite). Buddy was a great guy but he demanded perfection from every chair. He pushed us beyond our ability, we were all just kids and he scared us to death. He used to watch the band the whole gig, rarely looking away from the band. That made us nervous for sure. He busted our asses weekly.
@hobes9 Look Hobo, I am 67. I played 2 years with Buddy. Quit acting like a know it all prick. You don't know shit. We made 300.00 per week asshole, not a shitload. Maybe you should shut the hell up punk. I played with Herman, Thad Jones and Kenton. Any other questions?
@pal51961 I have a few questions . . I'm a huge Jazz fan . . interested to know first hand about the Legends . . what instrument do you play and what years where you with Buddy? Were you on any of B's records?
@MarkR1957 I played on the Roar of '74 album. I play trumpet, flugel and valve trombone. I played with various bands through out my career, but I was with buddy 73-75. My name is Charlie Davis. I am now a jazz educator and clinician. You can look me up on the web for references of my work. I am based in LA now.
@pal51961 Yes Charlie, I remember you being with B for the Roar of74 album. Great work! Waltz of the Mushroom Hunters must have worn the tpt section out. If I remember correctly, you were playing lead for B. You and Hopkins were monster players in that section.
Yeah, these young punks on here only want to talk negative shit about B, but there are just as many, if not MORE, stories out there about his kind and generous nature. Like they could ever understand what it was like to be Buddy Rich ~
@waltherppk1000 Thanks, the only reason I am really on here is because I just had back surgery and and laid up and bored, lol. Whenever the pain pill wear off I jump on the computer. I love that guys comment about knocking B's block off. Buddy was a really tough guy with a bad temper, I don't think I would fight him. He was strong like a bull. Thanks again.
In the old Jiminy Glick show, starring Martin Short, his bandleader(played beautifully by Micheal McKean)makes references to someone in his band playing too many "clams".Could this be the source of his inspiration?(Minus the "F-bombs")
@travisBrulzz You're fucking stoned...Travis Barker??? you gotta be fucking kidding me...come back and make comments when you know how to drum asshole.
@Putaspellonyou clamming is when you click together a scallop shell. watch the episode of spongebob when he rips his pants and ull see what clamming is XD
i cant beleive the 46 thumbs up votes for the caveman mentality comment above it proves that we all deserve the heros and leaders we have who dont give a fuck about any of you rich included and you give them your power respect kudos based on their bs macho abusiveness the more they abuse the more u worship them brillant talent or not how many of u can see the core issue of this mans ego and misery no you are all a bunch of 47 up thumbing sado Masochists thats BR i mean Hitler mo fos bow down
@HorrorDeathSceneGuy I do agree, he did seem to have a giant ego. But if they're playing like crap then he should tell them, but this isn't the way to do it.
This is seriously just an honest question - did Buddy ever play anything besides ultra-fast rudimentary solos at maximum volume? It's hard to find vids of other stuff.
@freein2339 I don't doubt you. Though Buddy's band played many progressive charts, Buddy himself seemed to stay true to his unique style. There is something about the way Buddy plays his jazz or "lazy" eighth notes at slower tempi that I find very compelling and "swinging hard".
What most people don't realize is that at the end of the tape, when Buddy says "Get off my fucking bus, right now!" the bus is going seventy miles per hour.
@orbiggie Your opinion is so matter of fact... The band is a unit like any other unit and if you know anything about units you know it is one for all and all for one. You were not on the stage when they were playing so how do you know the whole band was not screwing up? And if it was only one player why did another band member not get on him? He did have a temper but no different than say Vince Lombardi.
A whole band of professionals can't all be wrong. This is classic Buddy Rich and his temper. He was a great drummer but a lackluster human being and this recording demonstrates this. I love how people of Rich's generation "sing" their words. It was in style back then. All the movie stars did it, and people like Rich imitated it. Watch Rich "explain" why matched grip is "uneducated" and better suited to timpani than drum set on Youtube. Hilarious. He has a rather apelike face. Ironic.
I think he said 'fuck' more times in two minutes than was said in the entire movie SouthPark: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut. LMAO

Like many geniuses, the man had his issues. Everybody's a mixed bag, and the man left behind some great music.

After thisI would love to hear a real jazz master like Miles or BIrd rip Buddy to shreds about the fact that he plays the bass drum to god damn loud, has none of the subtlety or swing of the real cats like Papa Joe Jones. And how dare he flail are over the place begging for attention. Why doesn't he calm the fuck down and try to play some smooth groove.
onalyd 9 months ago
because he is arguably the best jazz drummer in the world, and he didnt get that way by playing a smooth groove
EZCreepin 9 months ago
@EZCreepin
not the best, not even close. You must not listen to much real jazz
onalyd 9 months ago
alot of people would consider him one of the best drummers in the world
EZCreepin 9 months ago
@EZCreepin
@EZCreepin
a lot of people admire his hand chops, not his musicality. When it comes down to it, musicality is by far the most important thing. The people that think he is so great are rock drummers who don't know anything about jazz. Ask a jazz musician who the greatest drummers are and I guarantee on 99% of the lists, Elvin Jones, Roy Haynes, Jack DeJohnette, Art Blakey, Tony Williams and probably a hundred more names will come up before there's a mention of Buddy Rich.
onalyd 9 months ago
well of course jazz musicians are going to mention drummers with musicality before Rich, he never took lessons, so im guessing he played jazz by ear. Ill be honest, ive never been in jazz band, nor do i know how to play legitimate jazz, but people back then put a label on Rich as being the best drummer in the world. Im not going to say that there arent people better than him, but i admire his playing like most drummers do
EZCreepin 9 months ago
@EZCreepin
well he's certainly not the first guy to learn by ear. Maybe he had the biggest ego...
onalyd 8 months ago
It means exactly how i typed it? You can search who is the best jazz drummer, and there are like thousands of sites who mention him being the best. "Drummerworld" and "100 greatest jazz drummers" are just a few who mentions his as arguably or the greatest jazz drummer
EZCreepin 8 months ago
@EZCreepin
that 100 greatest jazz drummers list is laughable, same with the drummerworld claim. Then you can say it's on a list so it's 'arguably' true.
onalyd 8 months ago
it's funny because i never said anything about the sites having valid information, i clearly stated that people put Rich as one of the best jazz drummers, and those sites obviously did. It doesnt matter how good their credentials are, all it matters is that people put him as one of the best. The statement that he is the best jazz drummer is an opinion, and you asked for people who labeled him as that, and i found them. My argument is validated by peoples opinions not on factual info. But peace!!

Tell them they're good.. and delusion takes over.
margovallen 1 year ago
@margovallen We need to clear some thing up now. Buddy was suffering with 2 herniated discs and was on heavy pain medicine. This made him quite angry, and he knew he had a problem. After the surgery he was a different guy. You are also quite confused if you think local musicians could play our book. Are you serious. Some of those phases took us days of practice to dial in. Buddy did not cancel tours ever!! He felt he owed the audience the best show possible every night.
pal51961 1 year ago
@pal51961 I understand about Buddy's ills. I also understand that he was not the easiest person to work for because he took it all so very seriously, was a frustrated perfectionist and believed in giving his audience nothing less than the very best of the very best. These are attributes that put him way up above all the rest. I've seen Buddy Rich & the Killer Force twice. Perhaps, my 'local musician' statement was a stretch.. but, there are lots of people worthy of being in his band.
margovallen 1 year ago
@margovallen I agree there are local musicians that could play the book, but not without intense rehearsal. Every chair in the band can solo if called upon and that is not easy to find in a local musician. Bottom line, Buddy was a good guy. He was like a stern father that would not put up with any bull. All perfectionists are difficult to work for. I worked for Burt Bacharach and he fired me for missing an intro that he decided to change 1 hour before the show. Now that is a prick.
pal51961 1 year ago
@pal51961 I understand the mindset and nature of the frustrated perfectionist... as I am one and I'm not in a band.. haha! I'm difficult to work with at times.. and refuse to follow idiots therefore, if it's not going to be right, I won't play.. and that is my decision. If people don't care to work hard at rehearsal only after having honed their personal skills at whatever they do then, whatever. Sadly, there are way more of the lackadaisical types than not. I'm a BR fan.. he has my respect :-)
margovallen 1 year ago
@margovallen But nobody has the right to speak to a group of people in ANY situation the way he does here. If I were one of the musicians he was screaming and swearing at, I'd get up and knock his block off (and yes, I know he was a black belt or something, but I'd give it a try anyway). It's one thing to be a perfectionist, it's another to be a schmuck.
ghb61 1 year ago

@MarkR1957 I played on the Roar of '74 album. I play trumpet, flugel and valve trombone. I played with various bands through out my career, but I was with buddy 73-75. My name is Charlie Davis. @pal51961 Yes Charlie, I remember you being with B for the Roar of74 album. Great work! Waltz of the Mushroom Hunters must have worn the tpt section out. If I remember correctly, you were playing lead for B. You and Hopkins were monster players in that section.

@eatyerbeans I heard from a lot of jazz musicians that Buddy could'nt swing at all...But he was fast and he was demanding...

@freein2339 That's funny because one of my observations was that Buddy can swing real hard - very alive and driving.
eatyerbeans 1 year ago
@eatyerbeans The word I got from guys that actually played with him was that he could not swing very well....
freein2339 1 year ago
@freein2339 I don't doubt you. Though Buddy's band played many progressive charts, Buddy himself seemed to stay true to his unique style. There is something about the way Buddy plays his jazz or "lazy" eighth notes at slower tempi that I find very compelling and "swinging hard".

Ironic.
