I´m a lucky owner of this fabulous Ducati 848. I bought my first motorbike in 1973 and had some 20 bikes since then. But this 849cc testastretta-desmoquattro Ducati -"baby-SBK" is the best bike I ever had.
People are over looking a hell of alot in this Jap vs Ital debate here....
There are lots of reasons to own eather bike and to summerize.. people wont buy an 848 becouse its really fast, you buy so you can go pretty fast in a CIVILIZED way. Not everone want to get to 200mph & not everyone wants to get there while the bike is bucking and fighting them, its why a DUCATI costs more!
Me personally, I like the bucking & I want the fastest ride regardless, I still ride Jap bikes 4 now..
@CARE2DOTCOM Exactly let's just look at the chassis.. everyone overlooks that. Duc is made of chromoly tubing... lighter and was stronger than cast aluminum, and will keep it's rigidity during turns. also brembo monoblocs... ohlins suspension. I'll pay the extra money for a bike that feels solid any day. I'm a big fan of twin torque as well >:)
i had a 08 gixxer then got a 08 ducati 848 cant compare ducati u feel every horse and tq and i have a zx10R 08 and i still rather ride the duck its worth every penny planning on keeping it and buying a 1198s next summer
Really? Why do you like the Duc so much? Do you ride your bikes hard? Are you pushing these machines to their limits or just riding them around?

The dry weight on the 848 ight be less but top spec ohlins and top wheels make them feel lighter. The 848 is a fine motorbike but needs 7k rpm to really move. 1198's smooth

Bwahahaa a 180MPH 140bhp CBR600 yeah of jog on. 70ftlb of torque from an 600cc inline four engine dont think so. An RSV1000 is in the 70's and thats a Vtwin. Go do some research before talking bollocks on youtube.

then either my speed gauge is bad or my gps with the speed marker is bad...either way, it can do it, shit, I'll let you ride my bike as long as you pay for it off the break....you break you buy...
You have no where near 70 ft/lbs and LMAO @ your claims, or your 200cc advantage question,. You obviously dont know the differences between inline 4's and twins and their respective power numbers and powerband differences.
You could well have that sort of power on your cbr 600 with a turbo charger. I sugest that you try and take a test ride on a 1098 or even an 848 so you can see the difference for yourself. I've rode both and I like torquey engines but the 848 really does move if you keep the revs 7000 plus. The 1098 would probably take you by suprize with its tremendoes pull without revs, its awsomely fun.
Sorry Briggs, the 09 CBR900 does 161, so unless you have lots of mods, your top speed isn't as fast as a stock 848 out of the box. Current 09 CBR-600 is 98 HP and 49 ft lbs of TQ. Respectable numbers. However, compare that to the 09 848 at 134 hp and 70 ft lbs of TQ.
As for Ducati being just a name, true, as is Honda. But...look thru the classifieds. CBR-600. CBR-600. CBR-600 ad infinitum. You don't see as many Ducatis out there. 15 years later, I"d rather have the Duck which is why I own one.
@sounddood I know this comment is old but to point out one thing, you're comparing the CBR's whp to the 848's bhp. The same dyno that measures an '09 600RR at 98hp will read 112 for the 848.
However, I do agree with you. For me the 2 supersports to look at are the CBR and the 848 and if I had the money, I'd go for the 848 because of that something special it brings.
@sounddood 15 years later i'd rather be able to replace any part i need on my honda for less than 100000000000000000000000 dollars... which is why i own one
@sounddood It IS just a name mate. There's NO reason why the ducati 1198 should be £3000 more than the S1000RR, no reason at all. That being said, I'm a Ducati owner, and if i were in the market for a superbike, I'd probably try to purchase the Ducati 1198 anyway! Such is their appeal/so moronic and easily manipulated am I!
@sounddood Im pretty sure that the cbr600 has more than 98 hp, and that is wheel HP where i believe the 848 claims 134 engine hp, which is probably more like 120 wheel hp. Anyway i have a cbr1000rr with 150 rwhp
@SuperTubbyTube But does it ooooooooze exotica, exceptional handling, and all out exclusivity? I always had Jap bikes, and was always happy with them. There's just something ...better...about a Ducati. Get a zap on one, and get back to me. I PROMISE that you'll see it differently, after a while on an Italian.
@sounddood You posted wheel horsepower for the Honda and crank horsepower for the Ducati. The 09 Ducati 848 makes 112 horsepower @ the wheel, not 134. Not even the 848 EVO makes that much @ the wheel. Your Honda numbers are correct.
What a peace of crap....800cc's and only 166mph top speed? my honda Cbr 600cc will take that and spit on it...Ducati is just a name, and I preffer the legendary Honda name over it
Calm down man. I love Honda to but an 09 CBR 600rr isnt going to beat the 848. The 848 has way for grunt and just as much HP. And it is way more advanced in breaking and handling then the cbr600rr. There not really ment to be in the same class.
I was waiting for a drunk or cell phone toting soccer mom to run them down....how stupid to film that close to the street...where it curves even! Nice bikes, I have a 14 year old 900SS and still love it more than any soul-less Jap bike.
@euricdinkins and we get enough BMW GS models through with drive shaft seals breaking, and K1200S or R with the a very noisy engine because the cam chain tensioners gone! All manufactures and models have there ups and down. Even the mighty honda engines have there problems.
Not only that, they don't understand what the hell a luxury item is. With a Ducati, no average Joe Schmo can go in and buy one - which makes their rarity unparalleled for street riding. I'd love to see people bitch about matinence own a Ferrari, where oil changes are over $2000.
Just a thought to all the Japanese bike fanatics that seem to like nothing more than slating Ducatis... Have you ever considered that the ugly bastard who lives round the corner from you who you see out and about every now and again on his nice shiny new 1098 probably gets more pussy in a week than you get in a lifetime...
I fear the same will happen to me. I am getting a Monster 696 (small I know) and I've never ridden before. I am pretty sure I am going to kill myself.
They are easy to ride bikes, they feels really light and the power is smooth and easy. Its reasonably fast for what it is but needs to really rev the engine. You shouldn't have no problems riding one as a learner. Just take your time until you get the feel of it.
Thanks, yeah i've heard that it's a super easy bike to ride and learn on and it doesn't have too much power but enough to keep you from getting bored in two weeks. (referring to the 696 I am getting)
After shopping around, that bike has more features, equipment, style and performance than any Harley, Triumph, Guzzi etc that I have seen. It is a no brainer for me. I can't wait to own one of the greatest motorcycles.
The handling through the twisty sections will make you smile more than the power, although if you have never rode a bike like this before, your be more than impressed.
No worries, buddy. Just take your time and RESPECT the machine. That's what it's all about. After a time, you'll earn that respect back from the bike, and you and that Monster will be a force to be reckoned with. I learned to ride on a CBR1000RR and was told by 4x World Superbike Champion Doug Polen that if you earn a bike's respect, you have nothing to worry about.
Yeah, since the previous posts, I have gotten my monster. I couldn't be happier. I put over 2,000 miles on it in the last few months and I think I am ready for an upgrade. S4RS is what I am looking for now. That or the new streetfighter. We'll see.
Thanks for the comment though. I completely agree with respecting the bike. Happy riding.
bikes are a reflection of the culture they come from. european bikes are classic and sexy, japanese bikes are technical marvels, and american bikes are backwoods old school crap with heritage. that's about it.
Sooo who won this argument? should i trade in my desmo 16 for a yamaha now? should i get a piano with it or a music setup coz yamaha make music instruments too?
Why o why do you even compare a Duke to a R6 or R1? Why even think of top speed! You wont even use it on the road. It's just my bike is faster then yours. Wake up look at the bike. The Ducati was a bike that started all the fuss in the first place. Just look at a ducati and it ouses style. You guys slate them and you probably havent even ridden one. R6/R1 are like so common knowone even looks twice. Ride a ducati into a bike park and all eyes are on you. I wonder why!
wow. youre so full of shit it hurts. no 600 will do 172 real true life mph. theyll indicate more than that, but they aren't really going that fast. and no, your ecu did not "switch it off". that's called the rev limiter. damn squids...
as you know EVERYTHING about motorcycles, you should be the first to know that Burt Munroe went over 200 "real true life mph" on a 600cc V-Twin Scout. so don't tell people what they "can't" do on a bike.
He's most likely referring to the newer Japanese production street 600's. Obviously a race or speed bike will go much faster. The land speed record for 50cc's is over 150mph.
Ok, so I think this 848 is one of the best looking bikes out there, but I cannot bring myself to enjoy the way it sounds! It is no more impressive sounding than my Toro lawn mower. Props to Ducati for continuing to make beautiful motorcycles, but I will stick with my Triumph Daytona 675's wonderful performance and even better sounding exhaust note.
You're right, aftermarket pipes do help, but I still don't get the same reaction or emotive feelings about the tune of those Ducati engines. This is one of the reasons I got the Daytona, because the exhaust note is deeper and more unique than any of the Japanese bikes, but also is high pitched and smooth enough to not resemble a lawn mower. But hey, to each his own, but I like what I like.
I still think Ducati are pricing themselves out of the market with the 848. If it was the same price as a jap 1000cc sports bike then for me it would be no contest: 848. But I can't justify spending more on a bike with less power and lower spec everything than the massive range of litre sportsbikes.
Would love a duc but not gonna happen until I have more money than I know what to do with.
which one is better? ducati 848 or 2008 honda cbr 1000 rr ? about the 1098 maybe it is good but the price is overbudget. my budget is only for 848 and 1000cc japanese bike (i prefer honda cbr).please help me
First off, shop around. I recently purchased a flawless 2008 1098 for 10k (excluding TTL). That's outstanding. But between the CBR1000RR and 848? they can't be compared. The CBR will win on the track because it has a 40hp advantage, but the 848 comes from Ducati, and has more style, class and soul than any japanese superbike. Up to you, but that's my input.
if you want something that is brutally fast and scary buy the cbr if you want something that is exotic, fun and passionate go with duc. I have ducati and I know it is not the best bike but I will never go back to a Jap.
To the bickering, winning an argument via comments on youtube is like winning the Special Olympics... You won, but your still a retard. I'm not trying to argue, I usually just watch WSBK or MotoGP, seems that Ducati being the best is actually a fact. Just from observation...
A duke will turn heads, and r1 is just another sports bike. Its like ferrari and porsche, sure they're both really nice, but people arent going to think OMG WOW when a porsche drives past, but when a ferrari does its a totally different story.
I understand you like ducati but, that r6 will smoke tht 848.Its a known fact.Everybody knows that.I like yamaha but,its not my favorite brand of bike.
Ducati is alright.Cost too much for no reason. You can get a much better and faster bike for less than what a ducati would cost. All you paying for is the name. All bikes are fast but this vs a yamaha,no match for yamaha.Plus its about the rider.
Like I said believe what you want!! And who would pay less for a bike that you see on every streetcorner?? You get what you pay for and with Yamaha, Kawa, ...... it's not much!
its one thing to talk about yamaha but for you say that about a ninja, you out your mind.the damn 1098 has less bhp than the zx10.The ninja owns ducati.Even in the cycle magazines it talks how ninja owns it.All ducati has is feature.Which is pointless on the track.
You just a ducati fan.Just thinking its the best bike.True enough, its all about what a person likes but,Its no match for any japanese bike.A waste of 20k.Bike just looks good.Nothing more.
little weak 160 something bhp.All it has is features. But ride what you like. You want to waste 20k on this bike,go for it.Your money.Sad that you would waste that much. All you get is looks. All sportbikes are fast but ducati, just flicked.
You're a realy stupid person!! This is a 850cc what the hell do you expect? the comparison is absurd 160 NOt fast? Do you even own a bike? You don't know what you're talking about you keep saying the same shit not even a descent argument! This is over i'm not even gonna replay your shit posts anymore!
Yeah I own a bike dumbass.Thats why I'm able to say things about ducati.I've driven one also.Quick to say something stupid.160 is not fast for me either.Maybe for you.Thats nothing for me.That 848 isnt all that.I've been on 6 that were more powerful.
Plus the fact that its a 848,you'd think it'll be more powerfule but no,This damn bike just like ex650.The daytona is more powerful than this also.I use to think that 850 was good til i read about it and rode one.
And you compared these two bikes whit each other?? You're the dumbass not me!! So the duc is like a 650?? Ok, R6 94,9 kW (129 pk) @ 14.500 rpm and 65,8 Nm (6,71 kg-m) @ 11.000rpm!!!!
I think you'll find that Italy have stolen the biking crown. Its for Japan to try and get it back. Seems like there's a lot of talk about whats best. Every bike has its niche where it will spank even the biggest and boldest oncomers. Its not the bikes though people, its the rider. Fact.
Ducati 1098: 180hp - 132.4kw @ 9750rpm and 99.1lb-ft 134Nm @ 7750rpm. That will smoke the Yamaha R1.The Daytona?? Man you're off your marbles, nothing more to say!!
ha!!!!! well...ya see..thats really really funny of you to say! jap bikes suck italian bikes dicks! every one wants a duc. not a jap! silly rtiger18 R1's are for FUCKS!!!!!!!!
ohhh man! youre a mother fucker idioT!!! you think yu know about ducati??... ducati 1098 R..... R!!!! 180 hp... and.. 189 hp!!!! with a simply race kit.. and if you think a R1 can win a duc 1098on track... you should watch the wsbk.. there is where all this disussion finish...

The 1098 would probably take you by suprize with its tremendoes pull without revs, its awsomely fun.

briggs9187 2 years ago
Sorry Briggs, the 09 CBR900 does 161, so unless you have lots of mods, your top speed isn't as fast as a stock 848 out of the box. Current 09 CBR-600 is 98 HP and 49 ft lbs of TQ. Respectable numbers. However, compare that to the 09 848 at 134 hp and 70 ft lbs of TQ.
As for Ducati being just a name, true, as is Honda. But...look thru the classifieds. CBR-600. CBR-600. CBR-600 ad infinitum. You don't see as many Ducatis out there. 15 years later, I"d rather have the Duck which is why I own one.
sounddood 2 years ago 24
@sounddood I know this comment is old but to point out one thing, you're comparing the CBR's whp to the 848's bhp. The same dyno that measures an '09 600RR at 98hp will read 112 for the 848.
However, I do agree with you. For me the 2 supersports to look at are the CBR and the 848 and if I had the money, I'd go for the 848 because of that something special it brings.

I PROMISE that you'll see it differently, after a while on an Italian.
criticalmass181 7 months ago
@sounddood You posted wheel horsepower for the Honda and crank horsepower for the Ducati. The 09 Ducati 848 makes 112 horsepower @ the wheel, not 134. Not even the 848 EVO makes that much @ the wheel. Your Honda numbers are correct.

briggs9187 2 years ago
Calm down man. I love Honda to but an 09 CBR 600rr isnt going to beat the 848. The 848 has way for grunt and just as much HP. And it is way more advanced in breaking and handling then the cbr600rr. There not really ment to be in the same class.

Not only that, they don't understand what the hell a luxury item is. With a Ducati, no average Joe Schmo can go in and buy one - which makes their rarity unparalleled for street riding. I'd love to see people bitch about matinence own a Ferrari, where oil changes are over $2000.

They are easy to ride bikes, they feels really light and the power is smooth and easy. Its reasonably fast for what it is but needs to really rev the engine. You shouldn't have no problems riding one as a learner. Just take your time until you get the feel of it.
benjyboba 2 years ago
Thanks, yeah i've heard that it's a super easy bike to ride and learn on and it doesn't have too much power but enough to keep you from getting bored in two weeks. (referring to the 696 I am getting)
After shopping around, that bike has more features, equipment, style and performance than any Harley, Triumph, Guzzi etc that I have seen. It is a no brainer for me. I can't wait to own one of the greatest motorcycles.
SpiaggiaVita 2 years ago
The handling through the twisty sections will make you smile more than the power, although if you have never rode a bike like this before, your be more than impressed.
benjyboba 2 years ago
No worries, buddy. Just take your time and RESPECT the machine. That's what it's all about. After a time, you'll earn that respect back from the bike, and you and that Monster will be a force to be reckoned with. I learned to ride on a CBR1000RR and was told by 4x World Superbike Champion Doug Polen that if you earn a bike's respect, you have nothing to worry about.
DrillRaptor 2 years ago
Yeah, since the previous posts, I have gotten my monster. I couldn't be happier. I put over 2,000 miles on it in the last few months and I think I am ready for an upgrade. S4RS is what I am looking for now. That or the new streetfighter. We'll see.
Thanks for the comment though. I completely agree with respecting the bike. Happy riding.

I wonder why!

mrhuggybearuk 2 years ago
wow. youre so full of shit it hurts. no 600 will do 172 real true life mph. theyll indicate more than that, but they aren't really going that fast. and no, your ecu did not "switch it off". that's called the rev limiter. damn squids...
Jmartin2683 2 years ago 3
as you know EVERYTHING about motorcycles, you should be the first to know that Burt Munroe went over 200 "real true life mph" on a 600cc V-Twin Scout. so don't tell people what they "can't" do on a bike.
UNCLEJUNKIE 2 years ago
It's not that a bike can't get going that fast, it's that you need to keep the rider sitting in the seat =p
iwasadeum 2 years ago
He's most likely referring to the newer Japanese production street 600's. Obviously a race or speed bike will go much faster. The land speed record for 50cc's is over 150mph.

andygreek69 3 years ago
Ok, so I think this 848 is one of the best looking bikes out there, but I cannot bring myself to enjoy the way it sounds! It is no more impressive sounding than my Toro lawn mower. Props to Ducati for continuing to make beautiful motorcycles, but I will stick with my Triumph Daytona 675's wonderful performance and even better sounding exhaust note.
ctwbluejay 3 years ago
buy an exhaust. what bike have you ever owned and actually kept stock pipes? nothing sounds better than a duc with a good set of pipes.
Jmartin2683 3 years ago
You're right, aftermarket pipes do help, but I still don't get the same reaction or emotive feelings about the tune of those Ducati engines. This is one of the reasons I got the Daytona, because the exhaust note is deeper and more unique than any of the Japanese bikes, but also is high pitched and smooth enough to not resemble a lawn mower. But hey, to each his own, but I like what I like.
ctwbluejay 3 years ago
italian spoiler asshole.
armaniwang07 3 years ago
I still think Ducati are pricing themselves out of the market with the 848. If it was the same price as a jap 1000cc sports bike then for me it would be no contest: 848. But I can't justify spending more on a bike with less power and lower spec everything than the massive range of litre sportsbikes.
Would love a duc but not gonna happen until I have more money than I know what to do with.
GrimTTL 3 years ago
which one is better? ducati 848 or 2008 honda cbr 1000 rr ? about the 1098 maybe it is good but the price is overbudget. my budget is only for 848 and 1000cc japanese bike (i prefer honda cbr).please help me
boss1376 3 years ago
the ducati 848 is better.....
giantyukondisc 3 years ago 2
First off, shop around. I recently purchased a flawless 2008 1098 for 10k (excluding TTL). That's outstanding. But between the CBR1000RR and 848? they can't be compared. The CBR will win on the track because it has a 40hp advantage, but the 848 comes from Ducati, and has more style, class and soul than any japanese superbike. Up to you, but that's my input.
DrillRaptor 2 years ago
if you want something that is brutally fast and scary buy the cbr if you want something that is exotic, fun and passionate go with duc. I have ducati and I know it is not the best bike but I will never go back to a Jap.

166 mph is 265.6 km/h. How the hell can that be bad. Thats fast for a middleweight sports bike!

dellialex 3 years ago
Ducati is alright.Cost too much for no reason. You can get a much better and faster bike for less than what a ducati would cost. All you paying for is the name. All bikes are fast but this vs a yamaha,no match for yamaha.Plus its about the rider.

its one thing to talk about yamaha but for you say that about a ninja, you out your mind.the damn 1098 has less bhp than the zx10.The ninja owns ducati.Even in the cycle magazines it talks how ninja owns it.All ducati has is feature.Which is pointless on the track.
