  • I have done a lot of building including remodeling my home and working on a garage, my father is a general contractor and taught me most of what I know about power tools. Glad the videos helped. Keep up the good work!

    J

  • Hi Jane, thanks for uploading your video. Are you a carpenter? Just curious because you seem to be comfortable with the power tools. I watched a video of yours a while back and made my own canvas. I made two mistakes. The first was that i didnt had an angle on the edges. And secondly, I did not stretch it tight enough. When i started painting I noticed the inside edge was leaving its mark and the brace down the middle. No worries, I learned from that. Thanks again for your help:)

  • I don't know why but the way you speed up the video every time you use the miter saw cracks me up lol

  • @canon21100 :-)

  • You have a beautiful spirit.

  • I used to cut and stretch my canvas when I was younger. Now in my days I just buy them from the Art Store. I did this procedure, nice saw. I like your staple gun and pen. I still have my first frame from when I first cut my canvas. I think I can say now that you're a pro!!

  • You really should wear eye protection when you are doing that, you only have one set of eyes!

You look nice with 2 eyes. Nice video though.

  • looks like it taes longer time and harder labour maing the frame, than maing the painting.

  • I have heard of people doing that, it will not be as good of quality, but if you are a student it should be fine. If you are making professional work I wouldn't recommend doing using that because it could sag and stretch out after under the weight of the applied paint.

  • thanks for your amazing tuts , i knew you use the pine wood but what about the material is it poly/cotton or cotton and can i buy it from hankok fabric or jo ann fabric? and put the gesso ...?

  • Your hot ;D

  • omg you're so cute! ><

  • where can I get the kind of wood your using? thanks for your help

  • @amacardo any hardware store. its just plain pine.

  • me Tarzan ! me likey Jane !

  • i dont know if you found out yet but you can go to a fabric store like joannes fabrics and pick up canvas for like 8 bucks for a few yards. its called duck fabric or something like that. its better than paying 200 dollars for a roll from blick

  • No Eye protection? Otherwise I loved the video - great job!!!

  • Jane is rad. Fact. Utility knife pencil sharpening, in black pants & sandals.....

Total 1%er. I would say the RING.... is uhhhmmm dangerous....yeah...... GoJaneGo

  • Thank you for your comment. I will keep that in mind for future tutorials. Best!

  • very good jane, but i am deaf wish it got a word there would help lots of deaf or hard of hearing, but it really good wish i know what you saying ..:>)))

  • That roll was a big one and it was about $300, but you can get it by the foot. I order most of my stuff from Dick Blick.

  • how much did you pay for a roll of canvas and where did you get it?

  • awesome! finally someone who breaks it down simple enough for me! lol.....

thanks! its fun to make a mess cuz it makes it look like we;re working hard! lol

  • awesome! finally someone who breaks it down simple enough for me! lol.....

    thanks!

  • Take off your armbands before you start ><. If they get stuck in that machine you're screwed.

  • Another safety tip is to have your hair pulled back and secured. There's at least a half other safety tips, however if you're careful and keep your hands clear things work out. I've worked around machinery all my life I'm 53 and nick names like Stubs and Hop Along are common at work. Awesome frames, thanks for the intro to large frame building!

  • I researched how to stretch a canvas...but instead have been enthralled by the beauty of the lovely lady teaching. But i'm totally listening at the same time!

  • I'm totally going to try this shit at my house.

  • i aint even care wut she was doin she a bad 1!!!!

  • 4:21 ......Yes me too Jane ....lol.... I cant wait to see you on TV .. you know some big producer is going to see this and go ..CHA CHING !!!!!

  • 4:21 ......Yes me too Jane ....

  • she keeps talking about safety, but where is the blade guard on that saw? thats the biggest safety issue of all. it's hard to paint with no fingers. plus you should always tie your hair back when using power tools.

  • I just made a frame for the first time and used your videos to make it all possible. I love it and you were a HUGE help. -Jordan

  • I think I found my perfect woman! Stunningly beautiful and she'll save me a ton on canvasses.

  • If we're not supposed to try this at home, why are you making an instructional video about it?

  • My daughter and I really appreciated your video segments... But, of course there's a but... you were using the router and I figure you used the saw whilst wearing flip flops... not safe, I worry about the piggy's going to the ER in a baggie

  • your hot to bad i dont know you

  • Woah nice set up.

  • Hi there. Love this video. What size of nails are you using?

  • great vids!! but you should tie your hair back when sawing :O

  • You're very well-spoken. You would make a great instructor/teacher of any kind.

  • @terrapin52 thanks for saying that! J

  • @JaneKenoyer and your also hot!!!

  • Very thorough and by far the best canvas framing/mounting video online. By covering every detail you keep the beginner from making costly mistakes. Your series desires an award.

  • a pretty chick doing all this on her own!? that is freakin' amazing! nice vid!

  • umm... Jane it's so hard to be able to concentrate on your lessons cos your sweetness is kind of distracting but thank you very much, this tutorial is really helpful for all those broke artists like myself hahaha. Ger from Argentina.

  • you sharpen pencils with a knife? honestly youre the sexiest woman alive

  • what kind of wood do you use?

  • pine

  • nice

  • yup..its fun to make mess ...more fun to clean it up later..

u r fucking awesome ..luv ya

  • hehe thanks!

  • excelente tutorial amiga... gracias...

  • You can also use 1/4 pine for the ''beading'' instead of using an electric router. This may be good for all you artist who are border-line broke or close to it like myself. I don't have an electric saw. I do it all by hand. I guess I do it the old Rembrandt way. hahaha. Jane you are doing an excellent job!!

  • Can u inspect my wood Jane? Thx for the demo btw.

  • Thanks, very informative. And wow are you cute, also not scared of power tools. Please come to Australia.

  • hey what router tip did you used?

  • Good looking lady...and she can work with wood too!

Don't let The Taliban find out!

  • You can use a normal hand saw. Just make a mitre, this will give you the angle. also use a hand planer. You don't need a nail gun a hammer will do , actually screws hold it best.

  • Hi Jane, it's great I can find your video since I plan to stretch my digital print on canvas. Its size is 40x18.5 in. I think I can do this myself. But I don't know where I can go to have my wood cut in pieces, especially the 45 degree angle. Home Depot can cut the wood but not the angle, do you know any place where I can go get this done. I don't have any type of tool to cut wood. And what type of nails in length and staples in size you think it's best to nail canvas this size securely?

  • You can also use a router or sander to make the angle on the wood in a pinch if you do not have a table saw. It takes a lot longer but it does work. I just use regular heavy duty staples, med in length (too long and they don't go in all the way, too short and they will not hold the canvas on). I use brad nails about 1 1/2 inches for the wood. Cheers!

  • another tip; you can get a 9 by 6 foot drop clothe at Lowes for $10. It is a heavy, smooth piece of cotton duck, and completely suitable for stretching and painting on.

  • A female with sanders and circular saw????

It's like seeing a live dinosaur...

I like this type of woman...

  • jane, really enjoyed your videos! is there another option for the nail gun and air compressor? could i just use a drill/ nail drill situation instead of getting a compressor?

  • Sure, I would just be sure to sink the nails so there is no portion of the nail sticking up or it will tear your canvas. :-)

  • I have a question about the wood you're using. Is it beveled? Does Lowe and Home Depot sell beveled wood?

  • Hey Jane-where do you come across the wood for such nice stretchers? I read that your father is a contractor, do you have any insider tips on where to get good pieces to make bars from?

  • I go to Lowes or Home Depot

The trick is I look for straight pieces, I have been known to sort through every board in a stack and only get home with 4 or 5 pieces! So I say just be selective. I have also ziptied the wood together if it is still a bit on the wet side with over size ties. This helps them to dry straighter if need be. Just be careful not to ding the wood. I wrap it with a rag first then add the tie. J

  • what thickness is the canvas fabric? or weight

  • I recommend double weave. Dick Blick Co.

  • i like to inspect my wood every day ! + she's cute !

  • Be careful with that saw it has no guard

  • Jane,

Thank you for explaining the process. You were able to give just the right amount of details...enough to demonstrate the process, but not too much...perfect balance!

    Alan

  • is it cheaper to make them then to buy them?

  • 36x50" for the length of the wood. The wood is 2 1/2" wide pine.

  • Hello, I am happy to stumble upon your video. I am really enjoying the tutorial. Although, I did not hear the dimension of the wood pieces you are using. Thanks

  • I thoroughly enjoyed watching your video series. Do you live in the New York City area?

  • Read her website silly :-P

  • You share your knowledge with refreshing openness. Thanks for the tips.

  • thank you so much, now I´m making my own canvases to paint my artwork.

  • Yes!!! That rocks!

  • way to fucking long

  • I thought the length was just fine. this is EXACTLT what I was looking for when I went searching for a YouTube video to learn how to make and stretch an art canvas. Thank you... for taking the time to go into such detail, keeping it simple and thorough at the same time! In my humble opinion, it was just right!

  • omg how cute r you!! i have been looking for a book on how to do this for a week now. Thank you so much for the videos.

  • Sure thing!

  • omgosh...i think you are sooo cute!

    im an artist

would you like to have coffee with me someday?

    :)cristina

  • cheers, really helped me out.

  • you forgot to mention safety!!! where are your safety glasses and why are you wearing sandles?

and why are you working on the floor?

other wise, it's a good how to video.

  • Thanks Jane! This is an awesome tutorial! Faved for future reference! 5 stars!

  • That is really cool to hear thanks. A comment like this makes it so worth the effort. It is fun to do, thanks for the encouragement.

    TheJane

  • i wonder if all the posters here are guys?

  • Cute *AND* informative! I'm glad I subscribed!!

    :D

  • wow (-: i couldnt do this. I think this should get featured in the how to section

  • thank you great info!!! i am impressed

  • Thanks for sharing your knowledge, I must try this at some point. It seems like it gives another kind of freedom to paint on a custom made canvas then the fixed sizes that the store bought has. Looking forward to the next episode.

  • you are awesome. man you make your own stretcher bars too? im in love. great job jane, sorry i got to this late. good ol youtube mail. lol.

  • How'd you learn to be so handy with power tools? you always amaze me:)
