I'm curious... did anyone figure out how to use the "Joystick + Keyboard" control feature? This was designed to recreate the arcade (2 joystick) experience really well, but it was really hard to communicate how to use it...
This game could destroy an apple ii! Had it in 86 and laughed b/c the sound was sh*T compared to the NES titles I was playing at the time! I guess it was satisfactory but still the death tones make my head HURT!
This is the first time seeing Robotron 2084 on the Apple II. I must say it's quite faithful to the arcade, with some brilliantly unique video effects thrown in for good measure.
@dirtchew: No, it is not due to RF, but the graphics circuits. And if they didn't emulate that, some games might not look right. The bleeding on text only shows up in Graphics mode. Not in Text mode. Otherwise, apps like Appleworks would've been a disaster.
@datacipher: Well you COULD fire in a different direction from moving, but it was clumsy. The other joystick button changed the direction when you pressed it.
Oh, I both loved and hated this game. The tank robotrons, the brain robotrons, the circular ones with their "clowns" that fire tracking shots, etc.
It wasn't just a fight to stay alive at the lower levels, it was the accumulation of men. If you ever wanted to get past levels 50, 98 or 99, you needed literally dozens of extra men. And if you did manage to survive, you went through the same ordeal again, a hundred levels of mayhem. I reached level 198 *once*, and never again.
I don't get this. This was run on an emulator? yet the white lettering for the score/high score, shows the same pink and green bleeding that I see on my Apple ][ when hooked up to a color TV. I always figured the bleed was due to the RF modulator not jibing with the TV tuner somehow. The inability to display pure white on black text was emulated?
This was a pretty good port. I also had a pirated copy. I probably only purchased 3-4 games for the Apple //c I had, but had a thousand games... I still do, but don't know how many would boot up on these old floppies which have been in storage for YEARS!
I played this many many times on my apple 2e. But even though it was a good version, the lack of counterdirectional firing was a big drawback. I still like the sound of killing the brains though ;-)

@nviso209 Well, that was the point! It was DEATH! :P But yeah, not much to work with a 1-bit sound toggle and no sound card... :)

I was always impressed with Robotron on the Apple ][. It could get going so fast. It always left me wondering how they wrote the code so efficiently!

I had a pirated copy of Robotron on my Apple 2e.
I always loved that version of the intro story because it wen't like this:
"In 2084 Man perfects the Robortons. A robot species so FUCKED that man is inferior to his own creation.
Guided by their infallible logic, the Robotron's conclude: The human race is insufficent, and therefore must be destroyed."

Something that disappointed me a little was the exclusion of electrodes from this port.
