This principle is used in the averaging mechanism of the old Bendix AN 5851 bubble sextants as used on planes and subs long ago....I'll upload a video of it in action---it operates on a 60 to 1 reduction with a pawl driver turning a bullgear 120 degrees with each rotation of the driver, then it gets reduced down 20 more X to a right angle drive that operates a decade counter---the idea is that the gearing averages out a total of 60 sextant readings over a space of two minutes.
