    This is the 9th Circuit court of appeals' decision, from 2002, UPHOLDING the words "under God" in the Pledge. I know it's long and has big words, but look to the bottom where it says "Factual and Procedural Background". The judges state the 1954 change as fact.

    In 1954, Congress officially added the words "under God" to the beautiful and traditional Pledge of Allegiance, in order to "rub the faces" of the Soviets in our belief in God -- except doing that was strictly unconstitutional IMO.

Belief in the Biblical God is indeed a religion, and the Founders specifically forbade it.

    The Pledge was written by a Christian Socialist who, according to his granddaughter, would have opposed adding "under god". He did oppose changing "my Flag" to "the Flag of the United States of America".

    In 1939, the pledge should have read as so: "One nation indivisible with liberty and justice for all, unless you are black." Sucks that we even lied in our own Pledge of Allegiance.

    We then fix the problem by passing the Civil Rights Act, but also reverted to stupidity by inputting the phrase "Under God" into the Pledge, when it doesn't belong. The sole purpose of the Pledge was to HONOR our Country, not GOD.

Yes, "under God" was not in the original, but the video this poster is referencing, Porky Pig's "Old Glory (1939)", does contain an Abe Lincoln quote from his Gettysburg Address, "that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom--and that government of the people, by the people, and for the people, shall not perish from the earth." You can take "under God" from the Pledge, but you can't take "under God" from the Porky Pig video.

When our forefathers pushed for separation of church and state, they were not pushing for atheism, they were pushing for a government not influenced by religion and vice versa. The lack of churches led our politicians to use government buildings as churches. They would switch between denominations every week so no one thought they were granting special favors to one or the other.
