  • "And on that day, Heine became a man..."

  • Wierd. Theodore Bikel, the office on the far left, is Jewish.

  • @Crunkboy415 So were Col. Kilnk, Sgt. Schultz and General Burkhalter. In fact, John Banner was a survivor of the camps.

  • I am looking for the german original song of this music can you halp me?

  • Its the Dessauer Marsch

  • best uboat commander

  • I think Curt jurgens beat out the guy from das boot and u571 as the u boat commander

  • I Love this part...An old dog, regular "army" in the face of the new Kriegsmarine...

  • Which movie is it from? THANKS!!!!!!!!!

  • @SonjaHenieFilmFan The Enemy Below.

  • 1:03, Captain you cannot do this! HAHAHAHAHA Classic!

  • love this movie and the song too, know both the movie and song by hart .great actors as well as acting ,thanks for sharing

  • What's the name of this song?

  • @Starwarsfreak101st

The song is "Der Alte Dessauer" which translates into The Old Dessauer. It is a song dedicated to Prince Leopold I , the ruler of Anhalt-Dessau, a principality of Prussia.

  • I can't help but to respect them.. They were the enemy, but, 10 years after the war, we see them as men who've lost comrades, and miss friends and families..

  • Was this composed specifically for this movie?

  • My second favorite sub movie (behind das Boot). In the 1930's Curt Jurgens was a UFA rising star eventually imprisoned by Goebbels for being "politically unacceptable" to the Nazis. He survived, and here we get to enjoy this German screen icon matching wits with an American screen icon, Robert Mitchum. Each a perfect representation of the male national character ideal of their respective countries. Great stuff!!

  • Curd Jurgens-a super actor.

  • They knew what they were doing when they gave the part of the U-boat captain to Kurt Jurgens. Even in the role of an enemy, which he invariably played in war films,it was almost impossible not to like and respect the man.A sympathetic roll played by a fine actor who, cast opposite Bob Mitchum produced the finest submarine warfare film this side of Das Boot.

  • Wish there was a recording of the whole song in English.

  • ...battle of wits and determination.......the MIND is still the best weapon!!

  • Kurd Jurgens - a survivor of a concentration camp and and Theodor Bikel is Jewish - a most remarkable scene.

  • movies from this era were all great, they had real actors and no need of big bangs and blow ups to make an excellent movie. Kelly's Heroes is another great classic

  • It's hard to tell what they are singing. Does anyone know the lyrics? I need it for a project.

  • I love a good classic.

  • I would like to get a copy of this song auf Deutsch.

  • i thought this was one of the finest war movies made

  • 0.04 - bit rough on those old 78's Herr Kapitan! lol

  • Does anyone know where I can download this song? Just saw the film, excellent!

  • Na ja ich die deutschen worte gefunden haben!

    Bill Donegan

  • I love this song. Do you have the german words posted?

    BD

  • Ensign Merry :"Sonar reports screwy noises from the target, sir", "Put it on the line, Lewis" is played by Doug McClure in his first movie role.

  • Gerry, always had uplifting marching songs as well as first rate equipment. They bit off more than they could chew though.

  • @paulregret53 They were out-numbered and out-technologied(!) As my late father used to say (and he fought the buggers for 6 years in 1939-45) NEVER under estimate the Germans!

  • @Factnotfictionpeople I agree, my late father was a RAF armourer, he bombed up ( Rockets) the Typhoons that devestated the Gerry armour at Falaise. The pilots and aircraft were always at risk from ground fire and it was a risky buisness.

  • the hunt for the red october totaly ripped this scene off great movie though

  • Wouldn't you hate to be called "Heinie"?

  • I found this film in a random search in the channel TCM, I liked it a lot, how a battle of wits is taken to the logical extreme when naval weapons are involved. One of the few that pulled a grey and grey morality scenario where I didn't want any side to lose, it was damn intense for a 1957 film.

  • It might interest everyone to know that Kurt Jurgens, the Kapitain, was a political prisoner of the germans during the war.

  • Psy-Op at it's best!

  • excellent movie, i recommend it to everyone.

  • I wish this showed him talking to the frightened sailor moments before, but this works.

  • lovin the golf shirts and 50's haircuts LOL

I know this is originally a Prussian march but what is this folksong version of this called ?

  • One of the Top Three submariner fils, of all time. One of my favorites.

  • "Maybe we can rip him open in the middle of 99 Luftballoons."

  • Great movie, made with heart, soul, and true humanity. With a few exceptions, most modern film makers spend tens of millions of dollars on special effects these days and produce works that are visually spectacular, but totally empty and utterly forgotten by the time you get to the place you spent the last 15 minutes of the film figuring out where you were going for supper afterwards...

  • We are still the good Komrades which are shown in this Part! May the US and the BRD nobady thear apart, and for all the fortidude Uboot-Drivers; HURRA !

  • i wonder how many kids have SEEN a turntable. LOL! thanks for posting this! songs help build camaraderie. Men of Harlech form Zulu, Panzerlied from Battle of the Bulge, etc....

  • SING IT HEINE!!!

  • Anyone know the name of this song?!

  • @Thewestcoastshooter original song call Der Alte Dessauer Marsch

  • @piderci Thanks buddy!

  • The Dessauer March

  • great movie.. i was a surface sailor, and when i was little i wanted to be like the german captain..

  • Truly a bad ass movie. I am happy my dad suggested I watch this movie to me.

  • As a W.W. II historian and former U.S.Navy destroyerman, I was moved by "The Enemy Below". Most of the Kriegsmarine's Unterseeboots' captains and crew were not loyal to the Nazi party, but felt they were knights doing battle with their country's enemies. The music, called "So Lieben Wir", is a martial song sung by Prussian soldiers during the 19th century.

  • Surrender never ! Eien Reich, eien Volk, eien Furher.

  • A stirring song, even though they were the enemy.

  • Great scene.

  • right before this scene one of the men, seen in 1:53 being teased by his friends, had lost it due to the depth charges and the captain had to calm him down. The captain then goes to the bridge and puts on the record. Really a great scene and a great movie. I highly recommend seeing it.

  • Bellum, horride bellum...

  • Considering that submarines were considered "coffin duty" well past WWII this type of morale boost was really needed for these men. No matter the Navy, subs were hell when you were trapped in one and couldn't get out.

  • i saw this about a year ago and it got stuck in my head

  • This definetly is a moral boost song, SuperVCR. I always liked this DKM re-make of the old prussan march.

  • "Maybe we can rip him open in the middle of a waltz" Go Robert Mitchum!!

  • your handle is clintonearlwalker?? after that statment it should be called: NEGATAVE PARADE RAINER!

  • You do you suggest, Kuntz? (that's charming!) lol.

  • kriegsmarine!!

  • please the name of military song et the possibility of send me

  • This is the german militaty march " der alte dessauer"

    /watch?v=5fFzRqbEAfw

    /watch?v=CDSYdgBgoBo&feature=related

  • This is one of my favorite Military song.

If you have the mp3 of this, can you send it to me?

  • Search youtube fisher in google and you can download it from here

  • The song is "Der Dessauer" with lyrics written for the movie.

  • "Torpedos aus den Rohren raus, Jagen England, England in den Tod "- uboots crews dream. From the number of 830 uboots which Germany sent to the fight allies have destroyed 784.

  • The raids of alliance had character of repayment. LW bombers crews in 1939 were amused shooting to civilian and children. Flew extremely low there was not then an error. In the war-time Poland in a fight lost 160 thousand soldiers only. 10 millions of the Polish citizens, not counting jews, just disappeared. Most of them became simply exterminated during the ethnic cleanings and in concentrations camps etc. The scale of planned crime of Germany is enormous.

  • Its really nothing personal...read the book all quiet on the western front. In WWI the opposing forces actually had a cease fire and celebrated christmas together..but the leaders

    put an end to that

  • Christmas Day 1914.One of the last 10 British Tommies from WWI was one who experienced the truce. I saw him on TV. He was a cheery old lad. It's sad that they're all gone now. My grandfather fought from 1916-18, from the Somme onwards. He fought in 5 major battles & went over the top 9 times. Wounded 4 times: twice seriously, twice not so bad. If being bayoneted isn't serious! Also shrapnel in his face non -seriously! He had white freckles for the rest of his life! God bless him. All so tragic.

  • In the movie the UBoat gets the American destroyer and out of respect and honor the German allows the Americans to abandon ships before he finishes it off.

The American captain then rams his sinking vessle into the German Uboat and they are both destroyed.

Thats how Americans are, its also the reason Germans showed no mercy, thats what happens when you show mercy, you get stabbed in the back.

  • It worked both ways. You can only show mercy in war if your backs covered. See the scene in "Saving Private Ryan". Where they let the kraut go free instead of shooting him. War ir war, and it sucks.

  • Why ?

Beacuse it is in the script !

  • That's how they are? The Americans? Such is war. There isn't anything that is one sided. It is simply kill the enemy before he kills you.

  • Funny thats the excuse Hitler had for killing the Jews.

Kill their people before they bring ours down.

Even more funny is that Americans told them out and called them evil but when Americans do the same kind of thing its "war".

    Interesting.

  • Not intersting. It is staying alive so you don't go home in a body bag. Try a war on for size. It never fits.

  • What was the last war you particiapted in, besides a video game. Careful you might get hurt playing one.

  • I ask you the same thing.

  • The Republic That Once Was Vietnam 66/67. Any other questions?

  • Thanks for your service.

  • Thank you !

This movie was a classic !

  • No one can take away from the bravery, courage, and camaraderie of the German soldier, sailor, and airman.

  • I think you mean the Heer, Kreigsmarine and Luftwaffe (official terms)

  • Very true. Same for the British soldier and the US soldier too. ;-)

  • They were brave and courageous alright. Shame those qualities weren't better applied.

  • The Republic That Once Was Vietnam, 66/67.

  • Ours? Yours? My Uncle helped liberate Dora Mittlebau near Nordhausen, Germany on 4/5/45. Which war do you speak of ? I suspect that all wars are evil. I never heard of one that was good. WW II had to fought. There are neither ifs, ands nor buts about it. War is nothing more than a clash of wills.

  • Negative -- that's Hollywood.

  • Many thanks ! I've looked for this song for years.

  • This was a great movie shows both sides of the coin. The "Chess Game"

  • Germany rocks.

  • I always hoped someone would post this song

  • watch?v=C0IYnRQJas0&feature=related

    look here

  • the name of the movie in germany is duell im atlantik--------------

  • Keep in mind when this movie was filmed. It was at the beginning of the "Cold War". With the exception of the political officer (that swine), the Germans are portrayed as the brave, hearty fellows they were; just the kind of guys we want on our side in the struggle against the Commies (those swine). Jawohl!

  • "Keep in mind when this movie was filmed. It was at the beginning of the "Cold War"."

That's part of it, no doubt. I also observed that a lot of our dads who actually fought the Germans respected their common soldiers/sailors as honorable foes. No different from themselves, and the kind of guys they could have shared a beer with had they not been engaged in mortal combat. The war was the biggest event in their lives, and so these films had a ready audience.

  • your right, the common soldier/salior was only following their orders it was the SS that were the real bad guys in that war, one thing most people don't know is all Nazis were German but not all Germans were Nazis

  • "..one thing most people don't know is all Nazis were German but not all Germans were Nazis .

I agree, but, hell, not even all Nazis were German. Hitler himself was Austrian, as was Adolf Eichmann, to name just two.

  • Yes nationality Austrian, but Austria was Germanic which is why Germany annexed it and they let them willingly. In fact they wanted to join Germany after World War I but the Allies would not allow it understanding a united Germany meant bad news. Hitler was also part Jewish.

  • and nowadays not all nazis are german, since this phenonem is an multinational thing.

Just as not all communists are russian, and not all democrats are US American ;)

  • @hochderkaiser If you read history about the U-boat captains, early on they were mostly honorable, helping ship crews after sinking their ships. As they lost crews, they were later replaced by Nazis who had no problem murdering men in the water.

  • @KMW52

They used to rescue crews, then the AMericans bombed three U-boats flying the Red Cross flags and Donitz forbade the Kriegsmarine from ever helping survivors again.

  • @DomWeasel Never read that and I did read from the writings of U-boat captains. Not saying you are wrong, just saying I never read that.

  • @KMW52

Look up the Laconia incident and you'll learn what I learnt.

  • @DomWeasel Where do I look it up?

  • @KMW52

    Simply use wikipedia perhaps?

  • @hochderkaiser dam right

  • "So leben wir alle Tage"

Traditional German folksong sung to the tune of the "Dessauer Marsch"

English lyrics written specially for The Enemy Below (1957)

Sung by the crew of the u-boat

  • Does any one konw the name of the song?

  • Does someone Have the German Version of the Movie of this Part?

  • To YOU, my friend, and YOU, my friend, and all of us TOGETHER!;

Here's a toast to life and to laughter and song.

    Good beer, my friend, good cheer, my friend, through every kind of weather;

Make the welkin ring as we sing loud and strong.

    Fill up the flowing steins again with foam on every lip;

We'll give a skol and shout "Jawohl! " in lasting fellowship.

    And when we eye a Lorelei with captivating ways;

May we drink to love all our livelong days.

    Jawohl! Jawohl!

  • Thanks Vares65 for posting the words, it's a great song, and thanks to SuperVCR for posting this. One of those brilliant war films that has both sides telling the story.

    Thanks again.

  • Thanks for posting the lyrics...I could never figure out the Lorelei line. ;)

  • Young Officer: But we cannot escape!

Captain: It will be your privilege to die

    for the new Germany.

the singing reminds me of the scene in Hunt for Red October

  • Great Movie ^^

Ich glaub er hats getan um die Moral seiner männer zu stärken und zu zeigen das er sich nicht unterkriegen lässt :)

  • Politics aside, this scene is a rousing recognition of folks pulling together, guided by the Captain, in times of peril and fright. We're all in it together, let's us all be as strong as we can. On a pesonal note, I had to put down a beloved dog who was terminally ill and suffering and this song/scene was in my head the whole time.

  • My name is Kurt, third generation Deutsch. I root for both sides! Not fair; Our whole family was divided in the war,,,,,,some on each side. A great movie with many feelings for me. Thanks for posting this.

  • what is the name of the song

  • Dessauer Marsch

  • good scene.

  • Kinda strange that Kurt Jurgens was an anti-nazi. One of my favorite actors.

  • The character is firmly anti-nazi as well

  • Since Kuntz is portrayed as an enthusiastic Nazi early in the film, it's weird that all of the sudden, he's suggesting surrender!

  • it's the film trying to show that the most idealistic will be the first to break

  • The finest submarine film ever. The "love" between worthy opponents. If you have never experienced it, you can not understand it. Ausgetzeichnet!

  • where can i get this song?

  • love this movie the song is awesome!

  • Oops should have listen ! My version is in german (the song)

  • I wish we could know what are the song's words in english

  • Uh, they ARE in English.

  • Sorry, I didn't listen carefully. I'm used to my French version, in which, funnily, they sing in German.

  • LOVE CURD JURGENS FOREVER

  • So leben wir. Now I wonder what release that was on the record?

  • "Sing it Kuntz" Shows what he thinks of his crew.......

  • Please elaborate.

  • LOVE THIS MOVIE AND THIS SONG

    JA HOL

  • Man those Germans are so tuff. it takes Balls to turn on music full blast when you are on a U-boat.

  • It was just a movie. They could have been anyone!

  • i know that. But i admire the U-boat crews they were awesome. Ever seen Das Boot? Now that was a damn awesome movie.

  • Kurt Jurgens made a fine performance in this movie. A very under-rated actor. JA-HOL!

  • yes sir indeed Kurt Jurgens did a damn fine job.

  • Tactically, this was stupid, he was right, the sound would carry, even better undewater.

  • I think that was the point, taunting and boosting morale.

  • That was Captain Mitchum's response to his XO complaining the harassment tactics weren't working. They were working all too well. Captain Jurgens had just dealt with a depth-charge-drunk torpedoman. "Let's rip 'em apart in the middle of a waltz."

  • @chrismc410 Kerleun knew the yanks had a good idea of his position, guess a bit of morale boosting wouldn't do any more harm

  • Saw it on AMC Great movie

  • plz post the german version. i didn't find it!

saw the movie a few weeks ago!!!

  • My father's going to love this, thanks for posting it!

  • Toughest military ever, enjoy.

  • Mein Opa fuhr selber auf einem U Boot.Noch heute kann ich mich daran erinnern wie wir zusammen dieses Lied gesungen haben.

So leben wir, so leben wir alle Tage !!!

  • The song is called "So Leben Wir". The sond can be found on the deleted soundtrack CD "The Enemy Below" by Leigh Harline from INTRADA CDS. Anyone can make me a copy of the CD? I love this song!

  • If you find it PLEASE e-mail me. It's GREAT!!!!!

  • The music is the Alte Dessauer Marsch, composed in 1706. Hollywood took a few bars from the song and created this drinking song.

  • fantastic

  • Come on! What is the name of this called movie? U-Boat interior is totally wrong!!!

  • dude back in the 50s/60s they just needed good actors.

  • What a fine example of attempting to muster courage under fire. Very rousing. The guys are in for a bad time and are facing bleak odds and some/most/all are starting to unravel, and the captain steps up and plays the song that pops them out of the now and hearkens them back to better, happier days, and that, hopefully, bolsters them a bit. I remember years ago I had a very painful/difficult task to perform and afterwards I tried to revive my spirits somewhat by humming this song to myself.

  • I loved this flick as a kid. I now see that the U-boat sets, costumes, insignia, etc., are completely jive (polo shirts for the Kriegsmarine?) but the story is as compelling as ever, and based on an actual event. I recall my pals and I singing this song as we marched down the hall in junior high. Jurgens and Mitchum: men's men-! Jawol-!

  • pwn3d

  • here is some info on the song

    uboat (dot) net/special/movies/item/92

  • Anyone know the title to this song?

  • Comment removed

  • No, the song actually exists. It's the Dessauer Marsch. The lyrics are made but inspired by the original. The German dubbing follows the original lyrics more closely.

  • When i remember it right, in the german dubbing it was:

    So leben wir,
