@dylancollver : works fine for zeppelin; about the bass: it's like with the JTM45: you have to balance the bass with the volume and the mid and treble controls
As a guitar player i prefer the cleaner sound of a valve amp, and when driven hard the amp gives out a lot of distortion, i was wondering if having a cabinet and increasing the volume would output a cleaner sound?
Just got one of these amps after seein so many awesome videos of them here on youtube. Ive used it quite a bit and it is loud as hell. Ive looked into this headphone trick but wonder if theres any chance damaging the amp doing it?
So using the headphone output to drive a external cab makes this amp usable? I dig the tone people are getting out of these simple amps, but was afraid of another class A amp. I had a Epiphone Valve Jr. and it was almost useless, you had to be in another room to use the thing it was so damn loud!
hello!
Be careful driving a speaker cab with the headphone out. It may require a 32 or even 64Ohm load. I can't believe it even makes a sound, but that is a sure sign that the output in not loaded as it is meant to be, and that can heat the output tranny to the point of roasted chicken. It could be your amp!
@realdocloco Right, but the headphone driver is literally a different amp. I am not from Marshall, so I don't know exactly how it was done, but most headphones present a load of 32 or 64 ohms, so they make headphone outputs to operate with those impedances. I did a little reading and found that the headphone driver IS in fact a separate circuit, so the only thing that might be in danger is the headphone amp itself, but I bet it voids the warranty, and you are on YT doing it, so....
I tried this from the headphone socket into a 1x12 cab with a v30 speaker, at full volume it is barely audible - have to put my ear to the speaker to hear it, any idea why? My headphones work fine with it, so it can't be faulty. Do i need to use a stereo cable with it maybe?
Soryr, a bit late for the answer but ... I've tried the Trouble Booster on the Class 5 today and was delighted! I 've played it with my Gretsch 6119 and my '60 ES-330, with glorious tones.
Franckly I don't know - most headphones have a 16 (or even 32 and more) ohms impedance. But considering the headphones output has to go thru a solidstate device (for attenuation), I'm not sure impedance is a concern. Well ... I hope so at least.
The Class 5 has no solid state circuitry. The headphone out is taken directly from the main speaker out and divided with resistors. It makes no difference if the cab you use is 16, 8 or 4 or whatever because there is a larger resistance in series with it and also a dummy load resistor in parallel.
You're just awesome man !!!

is there any way to play this amp clean at load volumes?

@metart93 the only way to get louder cleans is to change the speaker

This amp is amazing, but sounds too loud for bedrooms. Could we crack the valves at a "bedroom level volume" by using a boost o preamp pedal???.thx!
mnldz 1 year ago
@mnldz i think so. a booster inhances your guitar signal about 15-20dB, so theoretically the amp should break at lower volumes.

Chances are the headphone out is like 99% of all other amps....right after the preamp. ie, is skips the power section altogether.

At full tilt, it's pretty loud, and it could be used with a drummer in pub-like situations, as long as you don't need perfectly clean tones.
