Im not very familiar with car lingo but could anyone tell me what a stall converter actually does in terms of performance. and also what the different numbers have todo with it. thanks
@vetteboy453 all automatic cars have a stall converter. it connects the engine to the transmission. its the reaso nyour car doesnt stall when you stop. a higher 'stall' rating means the converter is looser in a way, so it allows to engine to get up to higher revs from a standstill, making the car faster. so its less efficient, and makes the car faster. gotta love this kind of logic ;)
@pepene93 it doesnt necessarily make it looser, the STR determines how "loose" the converter is. It just allows more slip, to put you in the power band and keep you in the power band during gear changes. Also having converter lockup makes up for the "efficiency loss." At cruising speeds i have still gotten the same mileage, and haven't lost much at all in the city, because of having a 2.5 STR. Maybe thats what you were meaning but i thought i would just clarify
Thanks for the reply. I have a 3600 stall I'm getting ready to install with a cam, and just wanted to know how well your tranny has held up to the stall.
@xKnock3Outx Depends on how hard you are on the trans. A trans cooler will definitely help a lot in keeping the trans alive longer. That and a bit of luck. I've had mine in over a year now and i havent had any problems yet.
@xKnock3Outx I know quite a few people who have a stall with stock trans. Like dpeach said, a cooler will help you out A LOT. Heat and RPMs are what kill the 4l60e.
I wonder what one would do with a 6l75e and a 3600 stall...
