Bert, I think you would have been better off letting Ernie count the fire engines.
All joking aside, this makes you wonder what Frank Oz may have put up with when the genius Jim Henson was writing his scripts.
As much as we may appreciate the work of the creative genius Jim Henson, working with such a master of creation can be difficult. They flood many of the workers with overwhelming tasks.
(Expecting movie like results with a weekly show when the time isn't there.) .
How was Bert able to hear the sounds of the sheep, the fire engines, and the balloon if Ernie was imagining those things making those sounds? Ernie must have a magical mind where any sound he imagines becomes real.
Funny how their beds have the first letter of their names on the headboard - does that mean this is MY bed, stay the heck off? Or are they just forgetful as to whose bed is which? lol funny clip. Bert panics too easily.
I remember this clip. I always wanted to mute it, though, because the fire engines and that giant balloon exploding used to scare me half to death, but now I think this is hilarious! The strangest things scare you when you're a five-year-old, don't they?
@DreamDancer82 Funny...when I was a child the sound of the sheep's bleating freaked me out! I loved the fire engine and thought the balloon was funny. But the sheep sound was creepy and would stick in my head at night. You're right - the strangest things can scare you as a young child.
The tragic thing about this segment is that there are places in the world where blood-curdleing explosions in the night are not that uncommon. Thank God it is not in New York yet, but it will come there soon if radical Islam is not stopped. Radical Islam already destroyed the twin towers. It must not be allowed to destroy the sacred American institution known as Sesame Street.
Uh..what's your point? And how does it relate to us getting thrills from Sesame Street? Go post your drivel elsewhere..not where people want to have some good unadulterated entertainment
@7777777utopia My point is that too many Americans don't grasp that a huge explosion at night is not at all funny in Iraq, Afghanistan, or increasingly myriad places in what was recently the moderate Musilm world. Ask any American serviceman or woman who has attended to an IED explosion involving children.
I love how the bed shakes as Bert is reprimanding Ernie for counting the fire engines. And his scream after the balloon blows up like it is Pearl Harbor being bombed is hilarious too. One more thing: When he faints, notice how his nose hits the headboard?
EVERY time I ever watched this growing up I'd convulse with laughter till I was rolling on the floor. Especially what set me off was Bert's expression at 1:49 here.
@sweetlife031 I've always found Ernie a most inconsiderate character but he and Bert obviousy have been a hit on Sesame Street since the beginning; otherwise CTW would of gotten rid of them years ago.
Frank Oz is a most versatile voice artist. He does Bert, Miss Piggy, Cookie Monster, Grover, Fozzie Bear, Animal and God knows how many more!
Yeah lol...however I do find it strange that when Bert screams, it's obvious the explosion scared him...but take a close look at Ernie while Bert screams. Bert is shaken, but Ernie is laying perfectly still!
@tashdog1 : At least not on this segment. The one where the Count slept over and kept Ernie up all night counting sheep, they gave Ernie eyelids to give him to appearance of having bags under his eyes.
That could be a counterpart to Harvey Kneeslapper's raucous blly laughing - which Frank Oz had to quit doing and Harvey got retired - bcause it was too much for Frank's throat to handle.
You're never too young for the Sesame Street "old school" episodes. Much was geared toward mommies and daddies then. You need never apologize to anyone for watching no matter what your age!
This is top of my list on my fav Bert and Ernies. As a kid I just loved the way the art was done on top of the video. And of course there's Bert's expressions XD
LMAO my mom told me when she was single, she was in the office on her break & they played this scene in the breakroom. she said she couldn't stop laughing & her boss was like "...are you having fun...?" LMAO. i'm glad you posted!
The part I like best in this clip is the balloon popping loudly. If Bert got shot with a gun, then, the screaming you hear in this clip would sound like it.
@WWEChampion16 I just saw this for the first time only last night (I rented the Sesame Street Old School DVD from Netflix) and I was just howling with laughter here!
@WWEChampion16 Maybe #2 should be the one where they go fishing, and Ernie manages to catch fish by just calling out to them: "Heeeeere, fishy, fishy, fishy!"
After laughing my head off at this sketch when I was a little boy, it's nice to know that as an adult, I can now still laugh my head off for even more reasons. First off, who would have thought that saying "one" could make such a great punchline to the whole thing? Also, I never realized that Frank Oz could scream that loud! LOL! It's a toss-up between this and their "Cowboy Hat" sketch as their best IMHO.
Be glad he wasn't trying to count the garbage trucks! Talk about a loud imagination at 3am! That would've been funny if he did wake up the whole neighborhood. This is one of my all time favorites!
It is rare but giraffes have been heard so they can make sounds. They hardly ever want to. Femals have been heard calling to the babies. Boy Ernie, you have one loud imagination.
Oh man, that's so funny when you can actully hear an imagination at 3am, followed by a balloon causing an earthquake! That was such funny stuff back then! Man, that was fun to scare old Bert!
