The Sisters had many talents - one of those was the ability to make gold out of crap. The original version perfomed by Hot Choclate was sooo cheesy and ugly. They turned this song into one of the best ones ever performed. And so they did with many more songs, which, admittably were not sooo bad before - but they brought them to their maturity: Gimme Shelter by Rolling Stone, Gimme gimme gimme by Abba ... and of course Jolene by Dolly Partons.
@duffdufffattybunny Well, you are right, I didn't choose the appropiate words. I should have said: IMO, so please allow me to correct this by adding this comment. Anyway, the lyrics are what both songs have in common ... and these are definitely brilliant :-)
I could care whether this was someone's real experience or not, I'm listening for art, not sincerity. And to be honest, I think the original song is better than this version.
Emma Emily Was The Front Man Of Hot Chocolates Mother Who Was 38 And Commited Suicide So Befor You Trash The Song This Is Words From A Son Hurtin Due To his Mothers Pass Respect The Lyrics Cus Dey Hurt The Soul Wit Accuracy To The Core, I Only Myself Jst Found This Out Even Befor You Cud Tell Its Sum1 Close To Him Woooow Big Respect To Him For This Pure Heart Felt Song Bout His Mother "Hot Chocolate" Dis Version Is Chillin :) Thumbs Up For Both!!!!!!!
Both this song and the original are beautiful pieces of music, but for me the main difference between the two (at least, how I feel about the songs) is: with the Hot Chocolate version, I get the sense that he's remembering his wife who died several years ago, but the memory is still painful. Meanwhile, with the Sisters of Mercy version, I feel like his wife died about 12 hours before he had to go on stage.
Didn't even know this was a cover. Anyway, along with Heartland I think it's one of their very best early songs. Prefered them before 'Floodland', on which only 'Driven like the snow' really does it for me. Nice resemblance on 'Driven...', by the way, to lines from 'Nine While Nine' from the LP debut: Would anyone with a little more inside knowledge care to elaborate as to why?
cool.....just bought a white label 7" of this from a tat shop with "Knockin on heavens door" on the flip. Wasn't sure what it was at first as I was playing it on 45 rpm rather than 33 rpm. I thought it was Marriane Faithful on 45 rpm lol.
This song is why Emma became one of the most popular girls name of recent. Amber is another most popular name buts another long story that only Gambit & Jimmy Page might comprehend. My father's name was not that popular & now its one of the top male names. Mine is also now overused.
I gave U Andrew & band company all I could out of love. Held U up Andy for your control freak; all powerful & losing ground. Just like the lil sacrificial babe I was. Jesus back & hope u could put him up & we may have the best of both worlds even as Mother Earth decayed & feminine graces forgotten. While every closely related whore claimed to be what was lost.God forgive us but can the others be forgiven? Sobs...I tried, I so tried didn't I?DB958 NO THIS IS GREAT !
Necessary lies confound mankind from religion to religion to hide the truth & everything that mends can tear us apart. The higher we get the lower we fall & the harder it gets to trust. Love of family will displace what you must save & its protection will take you to the grave & you shall rise the slave to your own enterprise. They will think they know but control when they are not in command. They just want a pretty picture & your wealth & prestige & you shall become nothinghood.
When our secrets run so deeply inside and the moronic tell us we need mental help the true knowledge propels us back to the strength of courage & wisdom we so mutually share. Everything we created always drives us apart on a road to nowhere.Someday you have to take command as all the others that lead must do. That is the moment of truth. Judgement like a Reign of exchange sets us free from the bondage love & hate that both leech our life force. I say let them create before they govern & order.
Sometimes you have to say goodbye but you can't go far cause you hear the silent cries calling you back. You know some loves aren't meant to last & yet they always stand the test of time when others fade away. Sometimes we cling just to find our seperate paths but we never really part ways.
This one is a sentimental killer guess it has to go down as one of the most touching songs in my life. Lil joke to make one laugh at the idiocracy of it all about the Lord of Fly's & Mother's Milk. Someone's fly is open & the cows are getting out of the barn about the time I realized this I realized someone forgot to Zip it. Then again women never shut up!!!
I think this is better than the original. It is one of the best that Sisters made anyway, mainly because Andrew actually seems to have feelings when he sings it.
I'd like to propose 1959 be added on the "songs Andrew shows actual feeling while singing" list :) Not that I have a problem with the other songs, Sisters of Mercy is one of my favorite bands, but he has a way of appearing as stone-hearted in his stage persona, but these two songs are... you know... they are!
Great version, Andrew always sung it with emotion, but this really captures the pain. Nice to see the SOM can still rock, I think Suzanne is a great song and ranks well with recordings like this.
Someone thumb's down the above post, I thumbed up it because this is an experience this happended to someone in their life, in the next five seconds some moron thumbed down again. Understand retard, this is an experience, this something is a little slice of someones life. Someone remembers and connects this song to their memories of a specific point of their past.
i thumbed up it, 'cuz I'm going through it right now.
hopefully I'll pass it, and know how to enjoy life.
