The Sisters had many talents - one of those was the ability to make gold out of crap. The original version perfomed by Hot Choclate was sooo cheesy and ugly. They turned this song into one of the best ones ever performed. And so they did with many more songs, which, admittably were not sooo bad before - but they brought them to their maturity: Gimme Shelter by Rolling Stone, Gimme gimme gimme by Abba ... and of course Jolene by Dolly Partons.

Both this song and the original are beautiful pieces of music, but for me the main difference between the two (at least, how I feel about the songs) is: with the Hot Chocolate version, I get the sense that he's remembering his wife who died several years ago, but the memory is still painful. Meanwhile, with the Sisters of Mercy version, I feel like his wife died about 12 hours before he had to go on stage.

Didn't even know this was a cover. Anyway, along with Heartland I think it's one of their very best early songs. Prefered them before 'Floodland', on which only 'Driven like the snow' really does it for me. Nice resemblance on 'Driven...', by the way, to lines from 'Nine While Nine' from the LP debut: Would anyone with a little more inside knowledge care to elaborate as to why?
