  • Our past is so much endlessly cooler than this early Century. Dropping mainstream corporate hip hop immediately is vital for recovering said coolness

  • East Coast hip hop owes alot to this man.He s a Legend.

  • I wonder if there is a ring tone for the Video Music Box intro?

  • My dad was too cheap to get us cable back in the day so, man, this was the shit - miss them days. Remember seeing Juice Crew and all them classic rappers doin it for real.

  • Does anyone remember the cable show "Goldie's Hot Raps" ?That was another great cable hip hop variety show from the 80's NYC.

  • This brings back so many memories of the 80's. Thanks for posting!

  • Comment removed

  • Wasn't there a guy named Carlos or something that also hosted when it started?

Anyway, Big Props to ENY. Linden Plaza/PinkHouses/Cyprus, etc. PS224/IS 218...

Anyway, I remember the earlier version which had a montage that included some folks vibing to No Sell-out by Malcolm X....that must've been the original.

  • That was Carlos DeJesus from NY Hot Tracks!

  • all you people are stupid video music box still airs on ch 25 in nyc its not the bridge show thats another show - its completly different now but its still hot 1983-1997 were the best years

  • o.m.g mucic box stopped wehen i was brorn

  • Real NY!! Miss those days!!

  • co-sign!

    and im from nyc,lolz!

  • Word mami! That was the realness when I used to run home from school to catch it on Ch. 31 back in Queens! Man, I just turned 30 yrs old and it STILL feels like only yesterday when I watch this intro. GOOSEBUMPS!...Haha. Much respect to Crazy Sam and Uncle Ralph McDaniels.

  • so did my sister until this dumb ass mother fucker named giuliani fucked it up.hip hop will never be the same like it was.btw,my sister is 33 and im 22 so its like 11 years difference, lolz!.

  • i remember the old Channel 31 (if you live in NYC) showing VMB back in the day. felt like yesterday. a lotta old school/underground rap made it big off this show. if you made VMB, you're going places for sure...

  • the bridge has been featuring the 25th anniv. show of vmb.

  • I've been missing these episodes. I hope to catch one before the year is out.

  • I'll go way back remember Gold's Hot Raps on New York Public access MNN....That was before Hip Hop blew up it was the early 80's, you could find everyone on that show Kid N Play among others...That joint was really low budget!

  • The ground-breaker for black music videos.

  • Ralph McDaniels and the frizz kid (Lionel C. Martin) were the hosts, but they quit after seeing how wacks the rap videos were playing. So they quit and become music video directors themselves. Ralph did the famous, Wu Tang's Icecream and C.R.E.A.M. videos. Lionel did the famous, Boyz II Men's End of the Road and TLC's What's about your friends?

  • You Mean The Vid Kid

  • While Ralph did move into directing videos as did the VID KID...Ralph did not quit VMB...Actually he hosted the show and did interviews for a very long time. He then stepped back somewhat, and brought on Tuffy and Crazy Sam to do some interviews, Even featuring Crazy Sam on Thursdays.. Slpiting the interview duties among the three. There was this other cat that came on board after Crazy Sam and Tuffy left. He then took over the bulk of the interviews.

  • I remember their "old school Mondays" too where you'd see the best old school Rap, Funk, and Soul videos. Now the show sucks and all they show is the mainstream garbage. I don't even think they do the old school episodes anymore.

  • Your wrong Bro he has a show called The Bridge which comes on every Saturday Night at 10:00.

  • That's right. I've seen that program and it's pretty cool. But it's just not the same.

  • Hell yeah, I remember this. his was back when Video Music Box was the Hip-Hop show to watch in NYC. And it was even cooler back then because it wasn't just limited to Hip-Hop. They played stuff from way back like Jimi and JB, and even some New Wave stuff that crossed over like A-Ha and Talking Heads, and the pop stuff like Prince and Madonna. They were hip to showing good music.

  • DAMN i can remember seeing the opening scene and hoping that Self Destruction would be the first video on

  • what is the name of this song that plays when video music box starts?

  • i believe its a whodini song

  • "Five Minutes of Funk" is the name of the song. That has been mentioned before here; all you needed to do was scroll down the messages to find the answer.

  • i think crazy sam died

  • No he live in harlem!

  • The good ol' days. Channel 31 UHF lol

  • whoa this is my first time seeing uncle ralph back in the day yo this is crazy

  • I miss Crazy Sam. Anyone know what he's doing now?

  • I miss this damn show. I grew up on this. lord have mercy. i feel so old and im only 27 ..lol definitely not 106 & Park, but it was way better. especially the shout outs at the club

  • It's funny how the song five minutes of funk always reminds me of video music box every time I hear it. Does anyone remember another show called Video trax which used to come on channel 25 every Friday.

  • yup!! remember that like it was yesterday

  • Uncle Ralph kept this same intro to this day...The realest video ever, all these rappers owe Ralph, nobody was playing hiphop videos back then, not MTV, BET, NONE OF THEM, they got in when there was money to be made off of hiphop, Ralph Mcdaniels was the one who broke rap videos on TV..

  • Video Music box still comes on Friday nights on Ch 22, NYCTV, Ralph Mcdaniels has another show called "The Bridge" that comes on the same channel. For my NY heads you can still catch The Box, Uncle Ralph been doing it for about 25 years now...Real Hip Hop niggaz know...

  • he would always play a video. the dude looked like he was either from queens or brooklyn. they would be smoking a stiff one and they would always block out the shottie in the corner of the room. i cant remember who that is. does anyone know?

  • Video Music Box was the greatest thing to happen for NYC hip hop!!! Even if you wasn't from NYC, if your video was viewed on the show you was good.

And all these youngins who don't know who Uncle Ralph is, they are not real hip hop!!

  • i remember uncle ralph lol i remember watching video music box back in the days brooklyn on regular t.v. when i ain't even know what cable was as a youngin lol had to put the aluminum foil on the antenna to to make the t.v. more clear lmfao but damn 1989 i was born in 87 aint even kno this was on that long lol

  • Remember the shout outs?!?!?

  • man i miss video music box..wish there was more of it on youtube

  • wow! okay wait, am i the only one who would run home after school to watch this at 3:30!?! then of course they changed the time to 3, then 4...but im just saying!

  • yeah!! music box!! heheheheheh!! funny hairs, rappers!! nice!!

  • IF ANYONE COULD UPLOAD THAT WHODINI - FIVE MINUTES... INSTRUMENTAL(better quality), I'd appreciate it.

  • lime wire baby !

  • I miss video music box that was my show back in the days when rap was awesome not this overplyed crap they got now

  • oh i am totally gonna post it tomorrow. Ralph looked so young in 1989!

  • did u know that this show still airs in NYC?! I have met Ralph McDaniels...he is still giving new & up & coming hip hop & r&b artist a shot. My video "Hustle" was just played on his show last week.

  • Whodini intro...

Run-DMC/Disco 3 (The Fat Boys)/LL Cool J/Bruce Springsteen and The Temptations (The "Sun City" Video)/Prince ("Kiss")/David Byrne of the Talking Heads/Madonna

    /A-Ha ("Take On Me")/Jimi Hendrix/James Brown

Robert Nesta Marley O.M./Bernard Wright ("Who Do You Love")/I do not know who was doing athe backspin...

This is an era when Black or "Urban Music" was full spectrum...

We had various genres of music we would enjoy in 1980's NYC...

  • Haha....Channel 31!!!! the inro with that Whoodini instrumental!!

    Anybody remember Tuffy?

  • i always did love the james brown an bob marley part.

  • What is old school WITHOUT the intro to Video Music Box??? Now THAT is old school.

  • I miss this! I used to watch Video Music Box everyday after school. What you know about channel 31?! They showed all of the best videos! Ralph McDaniels & Bobby Simmons were the best!!!!

  • Bobby Simmons and "Flava Videos"...ahh man, another great show. Now, if anyone can get some clips of that up on here!!

  • Yes! Bobby played ALL the videos and he kept his audience up to date on what was going on with everything! He's doing some type of online radio thing these days. I forget the link though. He said he was supposed to be coming back on tv too.

  • Yes, I used to rush home to watch the Box @ 4! Then my girlfriends and I would talk about the artists and sing the songs the next day in school. Good memories.

  • Does anyone remember Ralph's co-host, Vid Kid??? Alot people don't go that far back but it was him and Vid Kid in the earlier days

  • WORD!

  • Vid Kid was his partner Lionel Martin, who used to work at Tri Boro Record Store on 165th street right off of Jamaica Avenue in Queens, N.Y..

  • Jamaica High School!!!! I miss the Coliseum Block.

  • I miss channel 31. I miss being young. I used to watch it when I would come home from school at 4 o clock.

  • that was twin hype at the start of the show1

  • That dude spinning on his back looks like a dude from RSC in Beat Street.

  • It is! It's from the part where the Rock Steady Crew battles at the Roxy.

  • where is Crazy Sam ,,i miss that dude !!!! and old school Thursdays!!!!!!!!!!!as soon as i got home from school by the way Grover Cleveland H.S. 1994 class represent in Queens ,New York !!!!!

  • I saw Crazy Sam last winter time on 34th Street. He still looks the exact same with his dreads!

  • Run-Dmc,The Fat Boys,LL Cool J,Bruce Springsteen,Prince,David Byrne of Talking Heads,Madonna,A HA,Jimmy Hendrix,James Brown,Bob Marley,Ziggy Marley and the last guy spinnig on his back is ME !!!! so am i the true Hip Hop Vet ,,well i am 31 and grew up in Brooklyn ,,,,!

  • ALMOST right, the guy after Bob Marley is Brenard Wright in his "Who do you love?" Video. Where's the WORD segments, lol.

  • oh my god this takes me back to when i lost my two front teeth. i used to love seeing the drawings from the take on me video, and hearing don't disturb this groove.

  • He's a cool brother!

  • Wow, this brings back some serious memories!

This was like the poor man's version of BET/MTV... for some of us that didn't have cable at least we were able to watch Video Music Box!

  • Tell me about it. To me it's was better than most of the other video channel anyway. A TRUE classic for anyone who REALLY grew up around the origins of hip hop. Now, if you can remember the PREVIOUS opening for VMB then you are a TRUE Hip hop VET.

  • Foreal! Remember when TVs had the dial you had to turn & you got tight when your antenna would act right?! Aww man...

  • Ha Haaaaaaa!!!!! I feel you on that one!

  • Man I used to LOOVe this show when I was little! U also helped me find a video I was looking for for years....the one with the guy kissed the girl and they are rolling..what is tha name of that song???? I used 2 like it wen I was little. Man LOVED this show...grew up on it too.

  • i'm pretty sure the song is called "who do you love?" i remember the chorus, it was a call and response between the girl and the guy; "who do you love?/girl i'm in love with you/are you sure?/sure as the sky is blue"

  • bernard wright - who do you love?

  • wait are you saying the box ended...cause if you are it still comes

  • 5 mintues of funk you damn nubies..people say they hip-hop fans but never know the old skool song i never understood that

  • Man, it's sad to see Ralph not get his props. Yeah peeps might know Tigga, Clair and Freddy, but Uncle Ralph was one of the pioneers of this shit.

  • @m0fo The fact that Ralph does'nt get his props from the mainstream,, means REAL Hip-Hop is still ours.

  • does anyone know the artist and song name of the intro song?

  • whodini five minutes of ????

  • For the answer, read the rest of the comments...

  • whodini - five minutes of funk
