The page you link to (not the biggest secret in the world then if the info is avalable already) says the start of the barcode does "not necessarily indicate the country in which the goods were manufactured" only where the barcode was issued.

the info in this video is not correct ... the initial numbers in the barcode do not necessarily describe where the product came from thought the US government, with a few exceptions, does require all food products to be labeled with the name of the originating country.

Actually the first number in your barcode is 6. It isn't written in number form. Each two bars equal a number. The bars that extend down further then all the others. Are 666. The computer reads those three frist. Which identifies that swatch of barecodes, as a UPC. When they first came out. The 666 was on every UPC. They changed it because of complaints. Removing the 666. Which they now say are, Just dividers.

This is only partially correct. A barcode only lets you know where the manufacturer obtained the prefix. UPC barcodes do not show a country code....only EAN codes.

If you are an North American Company (US and Canada) and you import from anywhere in the world, your barcodes will still reflect North America.

American manufactures outsource our jobs due to higher wages and union wages. Many conservatives would like to see Unions gone and also reducing the minimum wage down to $2 an hour for those with out a college degree. There are no more US manufactures any more. I'd rather buy a product made in China then the USA. USA gives LSD to it's soldiers, it injected it's soldiers in the Persian gulf and fucked them up for life. The pesticides and genetic alterations in their food make it illegal to import alot of American products because they are too toxic. Made in the USA really means made to kill you or make you ill. Countries outside USA actually care about their people and try not to poison or make them ill.

Bad information! yes they are country codes, but they tell you what country the bar code was registered in by the manufacturer, not the country of manufacture of the product. So for example I have a tin of baby clams in my cupboard right now sold by an American food company, has a US prefix bar code, but the clams were grown in Thailand, says so on the label.

Its a bit obvious that a UPC or Universal Product Code would tell you information relating to the Product it is printed on, how else do you make a unique number that has purpose?

The barcode doesn't say where a product is manufactured. Only the country that the barcode is registered. /Sometimes/ this is the same place as the manufacturer. Not always though.

Also, if the first 5 numbers on a coupon match the first 5 on the item, you can use that coupon! Even if it is a different item! Long as the mfg is the same!

Good info, but most unprocessed foods these days have to declare where they are from. It's called C.O.O.L.: Country Of Origin Labeling. Packages of meat and seafood have to have a label or a sign posted. Same with produce.

There is a loophole which allows the importer to code the food with the importers country of origin. I worked for a beer distributer which is an american country that also sells foreign beers but is allowed to sell all products as American beers.

No US food in Croatia. I guess it's too expensive to transport it all the way around the globe. There are some US brands like Coke, Pepsi, McDonald's, Uncle Ben... but they are produced locally. No Chinese foods either.
