This aircraft was around 70 years old and old metal particularly non ferrous metal age hardens, making it brittle. Remember these aircraft for what they were and the battles they won, but keep them on the ground. Fly a replica instead. For the same reason, collectors of antique firearms do not fire them but use modern replicas made from modern materials better able to withstand stresses.

@bluelight530 Even if it was a mechanical failure, it is STILL HIS FAULT. The plane was not constructed to fly that fast or he flew it past its flight limitations. All modes of failure point to the pilot as the source of the problem.

Age has everything to do with it, but not the age of the pilot as everyone seems to think. This aircraft was around 70 years old and old metal particularly non ferrous metal age hardens, making it brittle. Remember these aircraft for what they were and the battles they won, but keep them on the ground. Fly a replica instead. For the same reason, collectors of antique firearms do not fire them but use modern replicas made from modern materials better able to withstand stresses.

@yasser999123 These aircraft are highly modified and rarely complete originals. The engines, wings and much of the frames are completely modified and new parts. The man was not flying a 'vintage' original aircraft.

My heart goes out to those injured and killed. My complaint is the reporting! The plane did not crash "into the stands" as one reporter said. It crashed near the stands. There is a difference! It was also reported there were "mass casualties." Since when does 3 constitute a "mass?" These people need new jobs!

O'Brien, who is chairman of an air show in his hometown in California, was photographing Friday's races when the crash occurred.
He said the P-51 Mustang was racing six other planes, and was in the process of moving from third place into second when it pitched violently upward, rolled and then headed straight down.
From the photos he took, O'Brien said it looked like a piece of the plane's tail called a "trim tab" had fallen off. He believes that's what caused the plane's sudden climb.

The "experts" who respond here have already concluded that the age of the pilot has something to do with this accident. At the very least they should wait for the professional of the NTSB to come up with the results of the cause of the accident. Or perhaps the NTSB is no longer needed because these responders are so knowledgeable.

@charper1 These old war planes are very carefully looked after and scrutinised before flying at displays like this,chances of some mechanical failure is slim.In all probability,considering the pilots age of 74 there could well be more reasons to think he may have suffered a heart attack or a blackout etc in flight,these planes pull some force and at 74 maybe it had an effect on his aged body that caused him to crash.Time will reveall,our condolances to all the families of those who are suffering

@GRACEORT the pilot has probably been flying planes for twice as long as you have been alive. if he was racing in an air show he obviously knows how to fly a plane? he was headed strait for all the people and managed to pull the plane away enough to save a few hundred peoples lives. people normally dont decide to get a pilots licence at 70 years old, especially to enter air shows and race planes.
