2gigs must be enough to work with AE, but yes sometimes if the projects get to heavy it can become slow, one of the tricks can be then to disable the liveupdate of your changes..so you have more smooth workflow.
man how do u work with it in ae? i have 2gb ram only, but its impossible to work w/ cause the render is slow, can u make it wireframe or something like that?
@buckamoona There isn't really a wireframe option, because it's not a 3D app. But you can knock the resolution down. There is a drop down menu at the bottom of the comp window. It says, 'auto, full, half, third, quarter' just click the resolution suited for you.
On another note, i had only 1GB of RAM on my G5 iMac when I started out. It worked ok. I just set the res low, and let it render overnight.

if u use 1024 x 720 (720p)
resolution it will be HD .... i'm sure u know that...
