As a veteran of Top-Down shooters and Curtain Fire games I noticed something odd when I first played this game at a cousins house: It was too easy. I beat it in my first try. I blame the 3D rendering for that. It takes up more memory to have many 3D objects on the screen at one time instead of just having 2D sprites. The high detail of the 3D objects allows for far, far, far fewer objects to be presented.
@auritone How does "Games on Demand" region-locking work? Raiden 4 and Fighters Aces are both in the US marketplace, I believe. RFA might be the Japanese marketplace; I don't remember.
awesome, I'll have to pick this up. I just got Mushihimesama for 360, that one is region free. It's kind of short. That's funny you said they're cheap, because in Japan all new shmups are REALLY expensive, like 7,000 yen, which is like 80 bucks. I loved the first Raiden on PS1, so I'm sure I'll love this, haven't played it in forever, but looks the same just better
I wish someone could make a good review of Siter Skain's Reflex or Kamui. They are considered (by those who've played them) to be some of the best Shmups ever made, but those games are sadly incredbly underrated and unknown of and very few have acually played them.

@tomagotchii I reccomend Raiden Fighters Aces, it has more to it (three games in one, each game in aces is as long and difficult as Raiden IV and it has more ships.)
In a world of bland first-person shooters and stylized polygon graphics with nothing more to add to fun gaming, Raiden and other shmups are a breath of fresh air. The creators of these games truly love what video games are about. Great 2-d graphics, sound fx, music, challenging gameplay... and, yes, it's surprisingly cheep at 20 bucks (tops!). Raiden is also very addicting once you learn the attack patterns. Seriously, buy it so they make more of them!
-_- Guys, Raiden IV is a totally different game than Cave shooters (dan maku). It relies more on remembering enemy placement than streaming/dodging. Bullets are fast and the scoring system is mehish in comparision but it's still a damn good game.

I think it's just as hard even though it isn't a bullet hell shooter. In Cave shmups the game slows down so you can dodge the bullets, in Raiden IV the bullets fly quicky and there's never any slowdown. If you play this game on the hardest difficulty, it's nearly impossible. Only a few people (even in Japan) were able to beat this game on original mode... It's THAT hard. But yeah Mushihimesama Futari is kicking my ass now. The third stage on maniac mode... Oh boy. :(
Agreed 100%. I've only recently started playing on ultimate and the speed that the bullets fly at are insane. If you don't have the patterns memorized you have NO time to dodge or think of your next moves. Definitely getting harder as I move to the higher difficulties. Love this game so much!
I like it too! I prefer it to Deathsmiles, or Mushi-Futari. I just love the boss patterns, it's a LOT of fun to play through. And the scoring system is addictive (going up to the screen, and shooting 'em before they see you). I'm trying to get higher in the leaderboards though, that's what it's all about! There's another Cave 'shmup' that came out called Espgaluda 2, looks pretty neat! :D
Yeah, I checked eBay too and it's all pretty much about $45! I guess it's because it's a Japanese import, probably in very limited quantities too. I picked it up tonight and I'm glad I did! I'll be playing this game for a while. 8)

Just to name a few(ex raiden 4 and aces) Triggerheart, Contra and Super C arcade, Perfect Dark 64, 1942 Joint Strike, Serious Sam, R-type 1 and 2 bundle (Dimensions), and lots more. Great investment if you haven't changed your mind, yet.

@crazy4guitar3000 If you like shooters in a similar style to Raiden, you should check out Cave's games. Mushihime Sama Futari, ESPGaluda II, Deathsmiles, etc. They're 360 exclusive, besides arcade releases.

I just got this, along with BlazBlue yesterday, and it is indeed quite cheap. I got it for only $19.99 although the only experiance I have with Raiden games is that amazing fanmade game Raiden X. Although, I did not realize that this was a bullet hell game... but that's a plus, for me, because I am a pretty big fan of the Touhou series, so I like Bullet Hell...

@NeverendingTwilight1: I hear Touhou generally gives out plenty of stuff for the player to use, so yeah, it's not as comparable to, say, CAVE games as you might initially think. That said, I've never played Raiden IV, but I've played Raiden, Raiden II, and Raiden DX, and Raiden X doesn't even come close to their difficulty levels in the long run. It would've been a lot better if they actually made the second loop harder, but then again I don't blame them for re-introducing me to shmups anyway.

See, the main reason why I wanted to get an Xbox 360, was because of its awesome games. Especially House of the Dead 4, Raiden series, and etc... and it's not fair because I have a PS3. Oh well. Man, even though it's great those idiots Gulti didn't develop this, I have to say it's nothing short of generic and too repetitive. If you want to see a real shooter--one that essentially gives you the element of challenge and the element of creativity and thought--you should check our Ikaruga, Omega Five, or Trigger Heart; all of which are on the Xbox Live Arcade.
i have 1,2 and 3 of the raiden series. I am going to wait till this one drops to 19.99 or try to get it used. I dont think the ps2 slows down at all for 3. I will be getting 1942 before this one just because i already have 3 of the raidens. Oh, and Giga Wing for the dreamcast sucks, unless you want to die 50 times to finish the game.

@crazy4guitar3000 You posted that a while ago but I'm telling you, when you get past the shitty dull overrated games on xbox, you find a TON of great humble classic shooters! Just to name a few(ex raiden 4 and aces) Triggerheart, Contra and Super C arcade, Perfect Dark 64, 1942 Joint Strike, Serious Sam, R-type 1 and 2 bundle (Dimensions), and lots more. Great investment if you haven't changed your mind, yet.

@crazy4guitar3000 why not? any system today is good, 360, ps3, wii, pc, all of them are good, so I really don't see the problem...unless you mean 'I don't wan't to waste money on a 360' then that makes sense! otherwise, that just sounds snobbish...or you aren't into games at all. I dunno.

@UncleBetty32k The 360 pretty much has one exclusive that I want, and it's this game. Ah, I tell I lie, maybe Dead or Alive 4 as well. Other than that I'm pretty happy with my PS2, PS3, Wii, DS, PSP, and ESPECIALLY my Dreamcast. I see absolutely no reason to buy a 360.

@crazy4guitar3000 I like PS3 but there are some amazing exclusives, Gears of War, Halo, Forza, Fable. Lots of reasons to get one. Luckily i know someone with a PS3 so I can play both.

@crazy4guitar3000 If you like shooters in a similar style to Raiden, you should check out Cave's games. Mushihime Sama Futari, ESPGaluda II, Deathsmiles, etc. They're 360 exclusive, besides arcade releases.

I just got this, along with BlazBlue yesterday, and it is indeed quite cheap. I got it for only $19.99 although the only experiance I have with Raiden games is that amazing fanmade game Raiden X. Although, I did not realize that this was a bullet hell game... but that's a plus, for me, because I am a pretty big fan of the Touhou series, so I like Bullet Hell...

@NeverendingTwilight1: I hear Touhou generally gives out plenty of stuff for the player to use, so yeah, it's not as comparable to, say, CAVE games as you might initially think. That said, I've never played Raiden IV, but I've played Raiden, Raiden II, and Raiden DX, and Raiden X doesn't even come close to their difficulty levels in the long run. It would've been a lot better if they actually made the second loop harder, but then again I don't blame them for re-introducing me to shmups anyway.

See, the main reason why I wanted to get an Xbox 360, was because of its awesome games. Especially House of the Dead 4, Raiden series, and etc... and it's not fair because I have a PS3. Oh well. I would like to have an Xbox 360, but I just don't think I can afford it right now, money or time wise. But ya, this game would probably convince me to buy an Xbox 360 even more. It's a perfect arcade game too.

This is now available on the japanese xbox live market place for under 3000yen (under £20gbp)if you have such an account,but in my opinion nothing touches cave games! check out death smiles and mushimesama futari!

@cocncrete you are right about mushi,amazing! gorgeous,exciting! but having now played death smiles a lot i can honestly say it is the best game i have ever played in my life,a symphony of colour and excitement! ps a little tip get an nintendo ds and r4 card and download caves ketsui death label,bullet hell in your pocket! ps espagaluda 2 and ketsui 360 soon! get them ntsc-j 360's off ebay!

yeah i mean it's not a lot of money so yeah,you don't get any new levels as with death smiles,just the scoring system changes and you can play god mode but to be honest at the moment i'm just playing normal or maniac and just trying to survive,you may have to open a japanese account and get jap ms points from ebay otr play asia to get the dlc as it is not on uk marketplace,not sure of us?,if u need links i can send them on how to create jap gamertag

@neontetra1000 Thanks for all the help my friend. I'm in the US and the DLC is on our marketplace but I've heard it causes stuttering during gameplay. I think I'll stick with my version 1.5. No extra levels just game tweeks for 1200 MS points and it causes stuttering during gameplay, I think I'll pass on Black label for now. I'm definetly picking up Death Smiles asap!! thanks again

well i have never noticed any issues with my dlc,it's fine,if you went more cave goodness get yourself a chipped ps2 and visit a site called called snesorama,that's what started it for me,now happily playing ibara,mushimi-same,espagaluda and dodonpachi,love it!

i think UNDER DEFEAT on the dreamcast has better visuals than this game and has better game play but this is still a good game but not the best out there, if you want a challenging game then get IKARUGA or for fun then get TRIGGER HEART

Man, even though it's great those idiots Gulti didn't develop this, I have to say it's nothing short of generic and too repetitive. If you want to see a real shooter--one that essentially gives you the element of challenge and the element of creativity and thought--you should check our Ikaruga, Omega Five, or Trigger Heart; all of which are on the Xbox Live Arcade.

Ikaruga is a great game, but quite overrated and not that hard if you're not playing for score

i have 1,2 and 3 of the raiden series. I am going to wait till this one drops to 19.99 or try to get it used. I dont think the ps2 slows down at all for 3. I will be getting 1942 before this one just because i already have 3 of the raidens. Oh, and Giga Wing for the dreamcast sucks, unless you want to die 50 times to finish the game.

Awesome review. I currently just got the game and I'm loving the crap out of it. Even though the $40 asking price is INCREDIBLY STEEP this game still kicks all kinds of ass. If anyones a fan of shumps DO NOT pass this one by (or the equally awesome Raiden Fighters Aces).
