  • I agree! I have always loved the Corvette since I was little. I have a Z28 right now with a 383 stroker and 6 point roll cage. But as soon as I get a better job I am also going to have at least a Z06. Nothing less. Not sure what color. Maybe black.

  • @Janusha Is 01 considered very very recently? Because the C5 z06 ran a 7:56 on the Nurburgring. Which is + or - a few seconds of the following cars. 07 911 turbo,06 F430, Ferrari 360, Aston Martin DBS. Also 9 seconds faster than the Audi R8. Which is a "super car" yet a $40,000 car beats it.

  • Yeah right... The Nurburgring. America didnt know what it was until very recently when all their car companies died they looked to Europe to "Euro-validate" their vehicles by claiming records in Europe. I wont go into every single detail here but the Ring is an open for all track. Anyone can show up and have a go. The ACR Viper and Corvette ZR1 that claim records there were ultra modified cars with full race teams. The other cars you mention were showroom stock. You do the math.

  • @Janusha Ultra modified? lol. Both the Zr1 and ACR are BONE stock except for added saftey equipment which would actually slow the car down. Also for the times for the ACR and ZR1 the track was closed like all the other official times and was both were confirmed by Motor trend and Evo magazine just like most of the other times. You just don't want to admit that american cars can compete with Enzos,911s and faster than any production Lamborghini ever made.

    Isnt it strange how they never went to the Ring until all US car companies died. They showed up with full factory backed raceteams desperate to generate hype to sell some cars. Then went home telling everyone how its an international benchmark and how they all won fucking gold medals.

  • Its called a PR stunt. And it works in USA. Because the nationalistic flagwaving masses will never question any "fact" that puts american cars over forreign cars. No matter how unlikely.

    However in the real world.. If you bothered to check. Porsche did 6:11 already 30 years ago. Ferrari did 7:22 in the early 70s. Back when the track was actually in use. Now its primarily a tourist attraction and a test track for german cars.

  • @Janusha Yeah the Porsche 956 is a RACE car. Not a production or street legal car. Its funny FULL Factory backed race teams. Most of the test laps for ALL the times around the ring are the same 6 or 7 drivers. All the top PRODUCTION cars have been tested in the last 8 years there so americans not going there intill the us car companies died is false. I don't know why you would bring up race car numbers when I was talking about street legal production cars.

    What Im saying is.. Yeah. Those were race cars. But also 30-40 years back. Speed is nothing new. Racecars have done same speeds since the 60s. Whats changed is style, technology and quality. Which is exactly where American cars have some catching up to do. So... When they show up at the Ring with race teams and modded vehicles. Atleast have the decency to compare their laps to race laps.

I still don't understand why you are comparing the Porsche 956 which is a Class C prototype car which is no where close to be street legal to a production sport car. Chevy does not have any custom built race cars. Production car vs production car the zr1 and acr can hang with ANY european car. So chevy doesn't have any catching up to since they don't have any prototype race car.

As for the 2500 laps I don't know if that is true but Jim Mero did the lap and he is engineer that works for GM he is not a professional driver. You say speed is nothing new but for a street legal car to break the 7:30 mark at the ring was only broken 5 years ago.

  • @Janusha And for modded vehicles if you considered safety equipment adding performance than every car on that list should be compared to race cars so the enzo and 911 gt2 rs are still slow compared to the 956. Also no matter how much upgrades you put into ANY car and still keep it street legal it will not run a lap time any where close to the porche 956. Since you are comparing race cars to street legal production cars I can do the same thing. The C6R Zr1 is so much faster than any production

Production to Production the ZR1 keeps up with any production porsche or ferrari.   • First off.. Street legal versus non street legal. Whats the difference. What is on a racecar that isnt legal on the roads? Viper put numberplates on its ACR racecar. Does that make it a roadcar then? Also.. there are a number of cars that are quicker than a Ferrari. Any fiberglass kit-car with a motorcycle engine and 5-600hp pr tonne will go quicker on a track. Radical, Caterham R500, UltimaGTR, the list goes on. That doesnt make any of them supercars in the same class as Ferrari.

  • Also you would find that the vast majority of Ring times are set by car magzines that borrow 4-5 cars and hire a ring driver for a few hours. Ferrari, Lambo, Aston, none of them actually turn up with factory teams to set records. Why would they. Does it make their car better? They have their own test tracks. no need to test in public. However Ferrari did run their new 599FXX and Pagani ran their ZondaR but they went there to test the car. Not to set misleading laps to generate hype.

  • Thing is.. In the world of supercars / top end sportscars. Europe produces around 50-60 current models without having to mention the special editions or one off tuneshop jobs. And 5-6 are produced outside Europe. So there is no real fight for dominance out there. Its pretty much settled. Europe produces them, Japs shamelessly copy and USA.. well.. They have their Corvette and thats about it. So naturally they scream and shout the loudest. They rely on claims, hype and records to get noticed.

Companies that have top performing cars at the ring want people to know. You don't see aston or lamborghini because they dont have any top lap times with their cars. Out of the cars you named the Ultima Gtr is the only street legal car. Also it is not a PRODUCTION car. The zr1 and acr can keep up with any STREET LEGAL PRODUCTION car out there. You say these factory race teams. Do you not get that the test lap for the Zr1 was done by Jim Mero a Gm ENGINEER. Not a professional driver.

  • Just about everything you said there is wrong.. congratulations. I couldnt have done that even if I tried. USA has ONLY the Corvette left. The Ford GT was out of production nearly 5 years ago. S5S Raptor is only in pictures. Saleen went bankrupt and are back to fitting blowers to mustangs. SSC seems to have died. And the ACR is Vipers final car. Its ended after this year. Also you clearly dont know what the Nurburgring actually is. And.. All those I mentioned are street legal and more too.

You said ferrari doesnt go to the ring yet they tested the 599xx, fxx, enzo,360,f430,599gtb,and the f430 scuderia. Again Jim Mero is a ENGINEER the enzo was tested by Marc Basseng a top ALMS driver. If Im going to have to explain everything then I really wont bother... If someone takes their own Ferrari to the Nurburgring and have a go or pay a Ring driver to take it for a lap... That does NOT mean Ferrari is oficcially tested on the Ring. Privately owned stock cars does NOT compare to raceteams running modified raced out vehicles. Read on the net.

  • @Janusha Yeah I know you can take your own car on there and pay a driver to do a lap or do it your self. But all of the official times were when the track was CLOSED. I was asking questions in my last post but you just avoid them.

  • Like I said.. Car magazines with hired Ring drivers. Mostly Horst Von Saurma and Mark Basseng account for most of these laps and they were done in public with other cars on the track and since all the cars belonged to various owners, NO changes were done to them. Not that I think you know what changes people would do to them to improve times.

  • @Janusha Horst Von Saurma did a 7:38 in a ZR1. All the times done by Evo Magazine and Sport auto are when the track was closed.

  • 7:38 is still far away from the GM claimed time.

    Its also right in the middle of a bunch of Porsches and identical to Nissan. All running with half size engines compared to Corvettes enormous 6.2. So yeah. That sounds realistic. Even tho Nurburgring times are NOT anything to rely on. Lap times on normal laps vary by a few tenths of a second from lap to lap. On the Ring they may vary by around 10-20 seconds from lap to lap. Which is one of the reasons why its too unconsistant as a benchmark.

  • What really kills the times for smaller engined cars, like 3-4 liter engines compared to 6-7-8 liter engines, is the gear ratio and when the power arrives. A smaller engine is likely to be ridigng the rev limiter half the time during the long stretches unless they set the gears up for 300kmh max speeds. Its not like a racetrack where you consider cornering speeds. The Ring favours huge engines... alot. Euro cars are more about handling and precission and the Ring is more for speed.

  • @Janusha Yeah it all depends on the track. On the ring the ZR1 is faster the a 911 gt2 but on a track like suzuka the gt2 would win no problem. Chevy has improved the corvettes handling over the years but still doesn't match the handling of say a enzo. The ZR1 can compete with european cars on longer tracks with not that many turns. But theres no doubt that european cars are built A LOT better than american cars.

Even cars with short gearing like a ferrari 430 would still need to hit 185mph, which is not possible. I dont understand your "huge engines" claim as well, maybe you need to learn the difference between displacement and geometrical size. The 6.2L LS3 actually is smaller and weighs less than the BMW M3's 4.0L. Output is important, not size

  • The Viper engine weighs nearly half as much as my entire Lotus Elise. Which is why with all its hp a Viper is still slower than my cheapass 1.8 litre Elise around a track. The Lotus does not use any kind of technology to achieve this. Its just well balanced and properly made. Then when you add technology to that, you get stuff like Audi R8, Porsche, Lambo Gallardo, Nissan GTR, Ferrari 458 and many more. You can justify 6-7-8 litre engines all you like but its not the way forwards for sportscars.

  • @Janusha The viper engine weighs around 500lbs, while your lotus weighs 2,000LBS. The viper lapped the ring in 7:59, the exige s, which is the supercharged, racing version of "your car" ran an 8:25. Ferrari actually borrowed the magnetic shocks from the ZR1, so that should quiet your "technology" claim as well. Also, all those cars you mentioned have been beaten by the ZR1 and the Viper ACR around the ring. Corvettes and vipers are not muscle cars, they are sports cars. Stop being ignorant

  • lbs is a stone age imperial system that nobody actually uses.. It weighs around 323 kilos which is more than 700 lb and my Lotus weighs around 700 kilos. Thats about half. Not 4 times more as you say.

    And as for the rest.. Please. I know those oneliners are popular on Corvette forums because people spam them all the time in response to any european car. But its utter bullshit. The Nurburgring cars were raced out vehiches that in no way represents a normal showroom viper or corvette.

  • Perhaps you should also know that most cars driven by magazines are forced to test during quiet mid-week tourist sessions, where speed limits apply in some sections. This means their lap times are measured from bridge to gantry and are approximately 22 seconds shorter than a full 20.832 km (12.944 mi) Nordschleife lap. They dont want any more dead tourists than necessary. This simply dont compare to when racecrews hire the entire track for themselves and mod their vehicles.

  • @Janusha All the OFFICIAL times are done on a CLOSED track. And that someone that tested the viper was Horst von Saurma with Sport Auto conducting the test. Radio and safety equipment are REQUIRED to run an official lap. So you can say all cars that run official laps on the ring are modded then.

  • I know Horst von Saurma wants is building his own list of lap times but my point is.. There are no OFFICIAL times because there are no time takers. There is no rule book. Its all self reported. Safety equipment that seperate road cars from racecars include fire proofing and a full roll cage. This require a full rebuild unless youre driving specialized vehicles with it already fitted. If you call radio and a helmet, safety equipment then I cant imagine it does much to the cars abilities.

  • Dude.. Ive written a big piece on the Ring and what goes on there. Ive done my research. Most "normal" cars wont have to worry about speed restrictions as they dont go quick enough anyway. Also they stop 200 meteres before the actual end of the full lap for safety reasons. Look at the lap times on the net and you see many variations of lap lengths. The lack of standards on the Ring is one of the reasons why its not by any means an international standard to go by.

  • The ones you mentioned are also humongous cars that do 0-60 in the same time as a tiny Lotus. I think youll find its different with performance cars. The Koenigsegg you mention with such confidence is a good example is a 4.7 litre engine producing around 1000hp. Infact Ive visited the factory several times and they bench-test the engines up to 1300-1500hp before putting them into cars.

The list of serious cometitors to euro cars are counted on 1 hand. Infact the quality of US-cars have been such that most havent even been marketed abroad for decades.
