The peak level LED on my RV seems to blink when hardly being driven at all and introduces a lot of distortion if I push it, is this normal?

Thanks! yeah it doesn't take much to overdrive the input because it doesnt take much energy to distort the signal passing through the springs. Best to set a low level and use compression before it and boost the output.
